Pagan Festival Shout Out: Festival In Honor Of Eostre/ Opet In Honor Of Taweret

Happy Eostre! April 20th is so many things this year, Easter to Christians, 4.20 to stoners, and a time to honor Eostre for pagans. Personally I do pretty much all that pertains to Eostre, I gave up the Christian overture long ago… I do celebrate 4.20 and since it falls on Easter this year it just seems serendipitous that April 20th is truly an awesome day. Also as most celebrate Eostre , let us remember that it is also a day to honor the Egyptian goddess Taweret.

First Eostre:

eostre
Ēostre is a Germanic divinity who, by way of the Germanic month bearing her name. She is the goddess of purity (the holy water), youth and beauty (the young maidens), as well as one of new life beginnings. Her true festival date is March 21st during the spring Equinox but since pagans where converted to Christianity by blending the heathen ways into the Catholic dogma, Eostre is also honored on Easter as well as on her true festival date.

Eostre first makes her appearance in literature about thirteen hundred years ago in the Venerable Bede's Temporum Ratione. Bede tells us that April is known as Eostremonth, and is named for a goddess that the Anglo-Saxons honored in the spring. He says:

"Eosturmonath has a name which is now translated "Paschal month", and which was once called after a goddess of theirs named Eostre, in whose honor feasts were celebrated in that month.

Now for Taweret:

taweretIn Egyptian mythology, Taweret (also spelled Taurt, Tuat, Taouris, Tuart, Ta-weret, Tawaret, Twert, and Taueret, and in Greek, Θουέρις"Thouéris" and Toeris) is the protective ancient Egyptian goddess of childbirth and fertility. The name "Taweret" (Tȝ-wrt) means, "she who is great" or simply, "great one," a common pacificatory address to dangerous deities. The deity is typically depicted as a bipedal female hippopotamus with feline attributes, pendulous female human breasts, and the back of a Nile crocodile. She commonly bears the epithets "Lady of Heaven," "Mistress of the Horizon," "She Who Removes Water," "Mistress of Pure Water," and "Lady of the Birth House."

As a fertility goddess she was also associated with the innundation, particularly at Gebel el-Silsila. According to "The Book of the Dead", Taweret guarded the paths to the mountains of the west which led to the underworld and could also use magic to help the deceased pass safely through that dangerous and frightening land. She was associated with the so called "magic wand" or "magic knives" used during labour to ward off evil. These magical tools were usually made of hippopotamus ivory, and included depictions of the goddess.

Taweret’s festival is the Opet festival, ancient Egyptian festival of the second month of the lunar calendar. In the celebration of Opet, the god Amon, Mut, his consort, and Khons, their son, made a ritual journey from their shrines atKarnak to the temple of Luxor (called Ipet resyt in pharaonic Egyptian, hence the name of the festival). Scenes of the festival in the Colonnade of the Temple of Luxor carved during Tutankhamen’s reign (1333–23 bce) show priests carrying statues of Amon, Mut, and Khons in barks through the streets of ancient Thebes, thence onto river barges and on to Luxor. Following this appearance to the populace, the statues remained in the temple of Luxor for about 24 days, during which the city remained in festival. The images were returned by the same route to their shrines in Karnak in a second public appearance that closed the festival. A direct survival of the ancient cult is seen in the present-day feast of the Muslim holy man Sheikh Yūsuf al-Haggāg, whose boat is carried about Luxor amid popular celebration. His mosque stands in the northeastern corner of the first court of the temple of Luxor, over the foundations of a Byzantine church.

My Easter/4.20 Horror List

I have been running possible films for Easter Sunday through my brain. I plan to blend in the obvious 4.20 flicks like the Evil Bong series and Hansel & Gretel Get Baked but the Easter films have been more difficult. I am focusing on ones that I haven’t seen as often. So here is my list of Easter horror for Easter Sunday.

1First up I plan to watch “Serial Rabbit” (2005) directed by Brett William Mauser.

Every year on Easter, a brutal serial killer stalks Texas searching for victims lacking spiritual awareness. This year, the serial killer has found Austin's hottest rave, and a slew of new victims.

2After that I have “Easter Bunny, Kill! Kill!” (2006), directed by Chad Ferrin, for my second film.

Remington, a murderous grifter cons his way into a mother's heart, putting on a fatherly facade to her cherished son, Nicholas. But the second she leaves for work, a torrent of abuse rains upon the gentle boy. Remington heads out for some hookers and invites his dilettante-child molester-drug-dealer buddy over to abuse Nicholas. In the meantime, the only comfort the boy gets is in confiding with his new pet bunny. Debauchery is at hand but Nicholas is nowhere to be found but someone wearing the mask of the beloved holiday hopper shows up ready to deliver a blood-splattered night of unspeakable carnage.

3The third holiday horror on my list is Dustin Mills “Easter Casket” (2013).

All hell breaks loose when Peter Cottontail aka The Easter Bunny hears that the Catholic Church is about to do away with all Easter rituals not pertaining directly to the resurrection of Christ. With Father Asher (A warrior priest) hot on his trail Cottontail starts a rampage leaving the bodies of the clergy (and a few schoolgirls) in his wake. Can Asher stop him before its too late?

4My fourth film to round out my Easter themed horror viewing is “Critters 2” , a staple and must for me every Easter. The film is directed by Mike Garris and for a holiday about eggs it is perfect.

A batch of unhatched critter eggs are mistaken for Easter eggs by the country-folk inhabitants of Grover's Bend and, before long, the ferocious furballs are on the rampage again.

5Of course these films will be mixed in with the “Evil Bong” franchise and “Hansel & Gretel Get Baked” because tomorrow is 4.20 which makes Sunday a double holiday celebration for me and my horror flick fun fest.

EVIL BONG: Meet EEBEE, a vintage bong with the mysterious power to grant truly killer highs! Hypnotized by EEBEE, college nerd ALISTAIR McDOWELL (David Weidoff) and his stoner roommates - including LUANN (Robin Sydney) and JANET (Kristyn Green) - take a toke and EEBEE sends them on a wild trip to her Bong World. There they encounter Eebee in her full evil glory, sexy but deadly dancers, and a veritable Full Moon smorgasbord of guest stars…

6Directed by Duane Journey.

A brother and sister battle a witch who lures teenagers into her suburban home with her special blend of marijuana where she then proceeds to kill and eat them to maintain her youth and beauty.

“I Spit On Your Grave 3” Announced

Okay I am kind of thrilled to see this rebooted franchise still going. I have made it known that I preferred the original “I Spit On Your Grave”  much more than the remake but I love that the film was remade and in such away that is not a carbon copy of the original. So I am glad that CineTel Films has announced “I Spit On Your Grave 3” will be pre-sold at Cannes this year. No word yet on who will write and direct the third installment but some details are out…

“I Spit On Your Grave 3”  will focus on a serial killer that uses a crisis hotline to target rapists. One of the counselor’s has a dark past, which sends Detectives sniffing in her direction — but is she the killer they’re looking for? (source: Bloody Disgusting)

My Review Of Documentary “Alien Encounter At Loch Ness”

aealnReality Entertainment’s documentary “Alien Encounter At Loch Ness” sets out to guide cryptid fans and enthusiasts into more otherworldly areas of explanation for the second most notable creature of cryptozoology, the Loch Ness Monster. The film is directed by Philip Gardiner and explores the more recent phenomenon of UFO sightings over the loch. With first person interviews, a quick history of Nessie sightings throughout the ages and some pretty vibrant post-production editing effects blended with some scenic shots, “Alien Encounter At Loch Ness” focuses on a few personal stories from Loch Ness area residents mixed with re-hashed information that most people have heard many times over but the documentary still manages to seem updated and relevant. I know-normally I trash these things for not giving me something new at a time when so many shows are out there doing just that-offering new material.

This documentary actually entertained me somewhat better than previous Reality Entertainment films. “Alien Encounter At Loch Ness” starts with a casual intro mixed with a Nessie enthusiast who has made the rounds lately as being one of the last decades few souls who produced some visual clue to a creature in the famous loch. This is the first time I am hearing his account first person, though I have read and seen his photos before it was nice to see him in this film. A lot of the film is really visual gimmicks that act as a means to stall between informative sequences with obvious intention being to burn up time count for the documentary. That normally would irritate me but in “Alien Encounter At Loch Ness” the blend of such artist stylization and mesmerizing soundtrack sequences create a nice hook for this documentary. One thing Reality Entertainment does is create some really artistic material as opposed to cold, sterile interview only, or bland material like some of the other films.

Why is this documentary relevant? Because it comes at a time when most researchers are declaring that Nessie, or the last of this cryptid species has died off. “Alien Encounter At Loch Ness” gives a few newer accounts and interviews people who are present today at the loch who have collected possible evidence, all be it minimal evidence. So that keeps Nessie and the mystery surrounding the Loch Ness fresh and continuous-far from dead as a lot of papers, blog sites and scientific types would have us believe. Plus it puts our minds into new fantastical realms as far as why Nessie proof is elusive and what otherworldly component is at work in the on-going tale of the creature. UFO sightings are a more recent phenomenon over the loch and the end of this documentary delves into the relationship between the Loch Ness Monster and Aliens. Personally I find it suspect but the accounts have been documented before this film was made and it is a new area for enthusiasts to ponder while holding out hope for definitive proof of the creature’s existance. So “Alien Encounter At Loch Ness” does offer an entertaining and fresh piece to the Loch Ness puzzle.

Original Screenplay By “Cross Bearer” Director Up For Sale

Adam Ahlbrandt has announced he is auctioning off the original screenplay to an unproduced horror film. On his Facebook page Ahlbrandt stated that “Children Of Torture” was set to be produced back in 2007 before financing fell through. The film which follows the indoctrination of new members into a satanic cult is being auctioned on eBay to show “potential investors that there is interest in making the project without watering down the extreme aspects of it.”

COT
“The film's title "Children Of Torture" has been a sticking point, even though the film doesn't involve a single minor”, the “Cross Bearer” director went on to say showing is affection for the project which fell through due to backers withdrawal in the production of the film due to “ extreme aspects”. Aspects that Ahlbrandt thinks future investors will see as important enough to the story not to watered down. Based on “Cross Bearer” I am sure there is plenty of interest out there and a film should never be forced to white-wash a story in order to appeal to a wider audience. Which is why I am posting the story here. Also the person who wins the bid will gain the rights to produce the film if the final ticket exceeds 10,000 USD.

Pagan Festival Shout Out: Rama Navami (Hindu Festival For Birth Of Rama)

Rama NavamiApril is a wonderful month in a season filled with rebirth and celebrations of gods born during this season. April 19th is Rama Navami, a Hindu festival, celebrating the birth of the god Rama to King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya in Ayodhya. Rama, the 7th avatar of Vishnu, is the oldest known god having human form. The holy day falls in the Shukla Paksha on the Navami, the ninth day of the month of Chaitra in the Hindu calendar. Thus it is also known as Chaitra Masa Suklapaksha Navami, and marks the end of the nine-day Chaitra-Navaratri (Vasanta Navaratri) celebrations. Rama navami is one of the most important Hindu festivals.

Followers of Hinduism in South India normally perform Kalyanotsavam (marriage celebration) with small deities of Rama and Sita in their homes, and at the end of the day the deity is taken to a procession on the streets. This day also marks the end of the nine-day utsava called Chaitra Navaratri (Maharashtra) or Vasanthothsava (Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka & Tamil Nadu) (festival of Spring), which starts with Gudi Padwa (Maharashtra). According to recent astrological studies, some consider his date of birth to be January 10, 5114 B.C.E.

Some highlights of this day include
  • Kalyanam, a ceremonial wedding performed by temple priests
  • Panakam, a sweet drink prepared on this day with jaggery and pepper.
  • Some people put a small idol of Rama in a cradle, symbolizing the significance of the day and offer prayers to it. Community meals are also organised.
  • Procession of murtis in the evening, accompanied by playing with water and colors.
Followers of Hinduism fast or restrict themselves to a specific diet in accordance to VedaDharma. Vedic temples are decorated and readings of the Ramayana take place. Along with SriRama, people also worship Sita, Rama's wife; Lakshmana, Rama's brother; andHanuman, an ardent devotee of Rama and the leader of his army in the battle against the rakshasa Ravana, the Brahmin king of Lanka. Some people put a small idol of Rama in a cradle, symbolising the significance of the day and offer prayers to it. Community meals are also organized.

In Northern India, an event that draws popular participation is the Rama Navami procession, also called Ratha Yatra. The main attraction in this procession is a gaily decorated chariot in which four persons enact the divine pastimes of Rama, His brother Lakshmana, His queen Sita and His pure devotee, Hanuman. The chariot is accompanied by several other persons dressed up in ancient costumes as Rama's soldiers. The procession is a gusty affair with the participants praising echoing the blissful days of Rama's rule as the Supreme Emperor on Bhuloka (Earth).

My Review Of “Black Water Creek: Legend Of Sasquatch”

bws“Black Water Creek: Legend Of Sasquatch” is a low budget film directed by Marshall Ever, Mark Shell that follows crime into nature where the legendary cryptid Bigfoot fights back. The film stars Sabree Anderson, Rodney Bulls, Marshall Ever, Jon Firman, Nelson Irizarry and Alvin Gray. The story follows Officers Rick Shaw and Lisa Willis are brought back onto a cold case after several more bodies turn up in Black Water Creek. Rick Shaw had been on administrative leave after the death of his partner in an undercover drug sting that went bad. Reports of Sasquatch and talk of Sasquatch killing people pushes Rick to the edge, but Rick will not give up pursuit to find the real killer.

This story sounds like a pretty cool one that should have been easy to tell with relative ease. Drug crime encroaching on nature sparks the rise of a supernatural like creature to fight back. ( Much like Godzilla). The only real problem with the story was the writing. Specifically the dialog. Most of which seemed unrealistic to the situation or characters. There was a lot of conjecture within conversational dialog between the characters, meant to justify the situations and relevance but mostly it just came off as out of place and full of holes. There really isn’t much in this story that  was believable or convincing. Also too many of the actors appear to be too amateurish or really disconnected from the story, acting is much more than hyperbolism.

The effects and soundtrack for “Black Water Creek: Legend Of Sasquatch” is pretty amateurish as well. Some of the effects work, mostly because the shadowing or quick glance at the blood or practical effects used didn’t allow for the audience to notice just how cheap the tricks where in the scenes. Other times the gore or death scene were just to fake and poorly managed that it comes off offensive to the horror fan. This film could have been so much more, and the man-in-the-suit creature could have worked had the team behind this film really put more professionalism into the other aspects of the film. There is just too much that doesn’t work in the film for it to really be anything other than a waste of 2,000 dollars. Viewer beware!

Leading a double life, Mary depends on her faithful servant and friend, Tituba (Ashley Madekwe), a mysterious and ageless accomplice to carry out her agenda. John, a war veteran, takes on the role of being the voice of reason in a town that is obsessed with witch hunts and unexplained phenomena. He realizes that suspicion and fear result in innocent people being victimized. On the contrary, Cotton Mather (Seth Gabel) is a well-educated local aristocrat who fans the flames of Salem’s witch hunt.
John and Mary find themselves in the middle of an epic romance, even as Cotton’s witch hunts engulf the town in hysteria, horror, and the supernatural.
