Shudder Picks Up "Tigers Are Not Afraid"

It’s been called “one of 2018’s best undistributed films” (SlashFilm) and “the best Guillermo del Toro movie he never made” (iO9). Now you can also call it a Shudder Exclusive. Shudder, AMC Networks’ streaming service for horror, thrillers and the supernatural, announced today that it has picked up all rights to writer/director Issa Lopez’s acclaimed feature Tigers Are Not Afraid across all its territories. The film is set to premiere on Shudder later this year.

“I’m incredibly happy to announce that Shudder will distribute Tigers Are Not Afraid for English-language audiences,” said Lopez. “Shudder is an outstanding curator of the best and the weirdest of international fantastic cinema, including many of my favorite new movies from trailblazing filmmakers. The opportunity to have Tigers Are Not Afraid among them is an absolute honor.”

“Tigers Are Not Afraid is a horror fable for the ages, as moving as it is frightening thanks to Issa’s fearless imagination,” said Shudder GM Craig Engler. “We are honored and excited to share this powerful film with our members.”
Filmmaker Issa Lopez has been showered with praise for her work from such luminaries as Guillermo del Toro and Stephen King, who tweeted: “this is one terrific film, both tough and touching. Two minutes in, I was under its spell.” Del Toro, who has called Lopez “a fantastic new voice in the genre,” is executive producing one of her forthcoming projects, a supernatural western. She is also developing a musical about Latino culture in Queens, NY for Paramount Pictures, and a supernatural revenge thriller for Legendary.

Tigers Are Not Afraid premiered at Austin’s Fantastic Fest, where it earned Best Director honors. It went on to pick up more than 50 awards around the world, including Best Feature at Screamfest, Mórbido, Boston Underground, Chattanooga, Toronto After Dark, and Amsterdam Imagine International Fantastic Film Festival. The film won both Jury and Audience awards at Paris Fantastic Film Fest, the Silver Raven and Audience Awards at Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, and ten nominations and two wins at the Ariel Awards, Mexico’s equivalent to the Oscars.

Lopez’s film uses horror and fantasy to deliver a moving portrait of the dire circumstances of the children left behind by Mexico’s brutal drug wars. Estrella (a mesmerizing Paolo Lara) is ten-years-old and alone. Given three magical wishes, she asks first that her missing mother come back, and she does... from the dead. Fearful of the ghost she believes she’s invoked, Estrella escapes to the streets and earns her way into a gang of other children, orphaned by cartel violence. But soon Estrella discovers you can never really leave the dead behind.
Marco Polo Constandse’s Filmadora Nacional and Issa Lopez’ Peligrosa are the film’s producers.

The deal was negotiated by Emily Gotto on behalf of Shudder, and Paradigm on behalf of the filmmakers. Issa Lopez is represented by Paradigm and Hirsch Wallerstein.

With Tigers Are Not Afraid and the recently announced acquisition of Shinichiro Ueda’s One Cut of the Dead, Shudder continues to lead the way as an essential service for both genre fans and cinephiles alike. Recent Shudder Original and Shudder Exclusive films include Lizzie, Mandy, Revenge, and the documentary Horror Noire.

Trailer Released For "INTO THE DARK: ALL THAT WE DESTROY"

Chelsea Stardust directs "All That We Destroy", the Mother's Day installment of Blumhouse and Hulu's Into the Dark series. The film will premiere on the streaming service May 3rd. It stars Israel Broussard, Aurora Perrineau, Dora Madison, Frank Whaley, and Samantha Mathis.

Crime Documentary "Rainy In Glenageary" Out Now

Award-winning Irish director Graham Jones, who has made several critically-acclaimed indie movies since the nineties such as NOLA AND THE CLONES and HOW TO CHEAT IN THE LEAVING CERTIFICATE, releases a new film today called RAINY IN GLENAGEARY.

This latest work from Jones is an unorthodox true crime documentary which explores the unsolved 1999 murder of 17 year old Irish schoolgirl Raonaid Murray - or 'Rainy' as some friends called her.

"I count three valid reasons to release this film, " says Jones. "The first is that it reports a credible allegation Dun Laoghaire Gardaí physically assaulted at least one of Raonaid's close friends during a regular police interview in 1999, without the slightest provocation and indeed their attitude toward her 'crew' in general was so accusatory that several teens just completely clammed up."

"The second reason is that some of this crew have recently begun re-thinking the events of late 1999 and it seems they do have further information, but after their previous alleged treatment by Gardaí in relation to such a traumatic event were naturally uncertain how to proceed and consented instead to internal audio recordings of their claims for our film's research."

"Yet the third and perhaps most compelling reason of all is that, following a number of Raonaid's crew bravely opened up about such issues, we have evidence strongly suggesting that others vilified them for speaking out - a large red flag to our filmmaking team."

Tribeca Film Festival Trailer Released For "Bliss"

Tribeca Film Festival Trailer Premiere: BLISS from Joe Begos

With his previous films, Almost Human (2013) and The Mind’s Eye (2015), filmmaker Joe Begos won the hearts of horror lovers through his stylistic nostalgia and inhibition-free penchant for brutality. Upping the ante, BLISS roars with searing visuals, kinetic energy, an endearing nastiness, and a ferociously all-in lead performance from Madison. Although it’s set in modern-day Los Angeles, BLISS harkens back to the grimy days of New York City grindhouse cinema, when films like Abel Ferrara’s The Driller Killer and Bill Lustig’sManiac were the norm.

Known for her dark and macabre artwork, painter Dezzy Donahue (Dora Madison) is in a professional rut. Unable to finish her newest commissioned work, Dezzy looks to reignite her creative juices by letting loose-as in, taking every drug in sight and tearing through raucous house parties and heavy metal bars. After a few nights spent with her debauchery-loving friends Courtney (Tru Collins) and Ronnie (Rhys Wakefield), though, Dezzy notices changes within herself. On the positive side, she’s finally painting again, but she’s also developing a strange desire for blood. As someone who has never been able to control her vices in the first place, Dezzy is quickly and violently consumed by this bloodlust.

“National Canadian Film Day is important day for me as a Canadian filmmaker,” states Black Fawn Distribution’s Marketing Manager Christopher Giroux. “Growing up, I was introduced to a lot of Canadian films and the importance of supporting homegrown entertainment. My parents would show me Canadian classics such as Black Christmas, The Changeling and Cannibal Girls, films that inspired me to become a proud Canadian filmmaker myself. Taking Black Fawn Distribution to the next level by enhancing our digital offering allows so many others to enjoy Canadian content as much as I have over the years.”

The Gordon Place By Isaac Thorne Available Now

Graham Gordon just walked into his abandoned childhood home for the first time in twenty years. Local teenagers have been spreading rumors about disembodied screams coming from inside. Now, thanks to a rickety set of cellar stairs and the hateful spirit of his dead father, he might never escape.

Meanwhile, reporter Afia Afton – whose father is the victim of a local decades-old hate crime – is developing a ghost story feature for her TV station's Halloween broadcast. When she learns about the screams at the Gordon place, the past and the present are set on a collision course... with potentially catastrophic results.
It’s a fight for the future and the past when spirit and flesh wage war at The Gordon Place.

The Gordon Place is the first full-length novel from Isaac Thorne, best known for his collection of dark comedic horror short stories Road Kills -- from which his story "Diggum" has been adapted into an award-winning screenplay, winning critical praise from Fight Club screenwriter Jim Uhls and “bizarro” genre author Danger Slater.

The Gordon Place is available now in hardcover, paperback and digital editions through IndieBound.org, Amazon.com, and many other retailers. Copies can also be purchased directly from the author via isaacthorne.com/gordon-place

Pagan Festival Shout Out: Ramanavami

Birthday of Hindu God Rama (avatar of Vishnu), protector of beloved wife, Goddess Sita (avatar of Lakshmi). Vaishnavas are devoted to God Vishnu and His avatars. [See Mantra to Rama.] [a/k/a Rama Navmi, Ram Navmi] [Chaitra Shukla 8 & 9]

Rama Navami is a spring Hindu festival that celebrates the birthday of lord Rama. He is particularly important to the Vaishnavism tradition of Hinduism, as the seventh avatar of Vishnu. The festival celebrates the descent of god Vishnu as Rama avatar, through his birth to King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya in Ayodhya.

The day is marked by Rama Katha recitals, or reading of Rama stories. Ramayana and Mahabharata are considered Itihasa by Indian traditions. Some Vaishnava Hindus visit a temple, others pray within their home, and some participate in a bhajan or kirtan with music as a part of puja and aarti. Some devotees mark the event by taking miniature statues of the infant Rama, washing it and clothing it, then placing it in a cradle. Charitable events and community meals are also organized. The festival is an occasion for moral reflection for many Hindus. Some mark this day by vrata (fasting).
