Pagan Festival Shout Out: Sementivae

Sementivae, also known as Feriae Sementivae or Sementina dies (in the country called Paganalia), was a Roman festival of sowing.  It was held in honor of Ceres (the goddess of agriculture) and Tellus (Mother Earth). The initial half of the event was a festival in honor of Tellus which ran from January 24 through January 26.

During the rituals there were offerings to Ceres and Tellus of foods, such as spelled buns, and a pregnant sow (an animal sacred to Demeter also). Small clay discs (oscilla) were then hung on the trees, decorated with various figures. These amulets were designed to ward off evil spirits and negative influences.

Sementivae Feria: Seed Blessing

Colors: Green and brown
Element: Earth
Altar: Upon cloth of green and brown set all the seeds for the next year, with the seeds saved from last year's garden in bowls in the center.
Offerings: Give seeds to poor farmers and gardeners.
Daily Meal: Vegan.

Sementivae Feria Invocation

Hear us, Ceres, Mother of the Grain,
You whose breath stirs the seed in the ground,
Though Earth sleeps now in her bed of stone,
We ask for her blessing on these seeds
Which will soon be sowed.
These are our hopes, our dreams,
Our aspirations, all promise and possibilities,
Waiting dry and dormant to be awoken.
Though we will not wake them today,
Soon the time will approach when they shall
Come into the embrace of the warm soil
And blossom into manifestation.
Bless our seeds, Great Ceres,
Mother of the Corn, Spark of the Plowed Earth,
Bless their promise, and ours as well.

(All cry, "Hail Ceres!" Then all surround the seeds and hold their hands over them, and together sing Ohm and Ah in harmonies, to carry Ceres' blessing. The seeds are then placed in a special basket shaped like a cradle, and covered with a cloth, and sung to.)

Chant: Carry our wishes
Carry our hoping
Carry our blessing
Till you be awoken

Giant Pictures has acquired North American digital rights for The Bellwether, writer-director Christopher Morrison‘s thriller shot in an ancient church in Brussels, Belgium. The film is a deeply character-driven genre piece. The horror thriller addresses women’s issues, and features a captivating performance by Alex Reid ( The Descent, BBC’s Misfits).

In the film, “to the outside world Joanne (Reid) is just a bookstore owner, but The Conspiracy knows different. She is dangerous. She is a bellwether: a quiet leader who is well on her way to being her whole self. When they kidnap her to break her, to make her conform, they discover that Joanne is something so much more than even she ever knew. The Conspiracy locks Joanne in a 13th-century chapel and she communicates with her ‘operator‘ only through text and images shown on television. In order to break her, they work on her hidden pain, the fact that she had an abortion four years ago. After standing up to the mental torture, the Conspiracy goes even farther; impregnating her and trying to force her to have the baby. We are honored to have her as the first actress in English to play the lead in a solo female led film and she creates a tour-de-force performance as Joanne Steiger,” said Morrison.

Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

My Review Of "The Pinch"

"The Pinch" is a crime thriller directed by Ashley Scott Meyers. It stars Gunner Wright, James Aston Lake, and Candice Bolek. The film is a blend of urban gangland lore and classic noir with a touch of Tarantino's influence.

When a low level mobster is nearly rubbed out by the boss, he decides to take the bonus he was promised by force, so he kidnaps the boss and demands a hefty ransom.

"The Pinch" is a relatively straightforward crime thriller, last-man-out story. Filmed in true indie style the premise transitions from a Tarantino-esque mob mentality into a sort of pulp styled "Lucky Number Slevin". The characters are lacking full development to really set life to Meyers vision,  but there is enough there to connect with them on a basic level. I found the protagonist loveable but tragic but I never fully understood why he was this way.

The cast all give pretty decent performances, a few felt slightly contrived but overall the acting really brought the story to life. I didn't, however,  feelike that the tongue-in-cheek satire written in as comic relief, was necessary. It stepped a bit to far in spoof territory, pulling from the darker overture of the actual plot. It didn't quite hit the pulp film mark. But those moments aside the movie is very watchable, and easily likeable. If crime noir is a favorite genre,  give "The Pinch" a go. (3/5)
