SHOWTIME Announces The Next Chapter Of The 'PENNY DREADFUL' Saga With 'PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS'.

SHOWTIME has announced the next chapter of the PENNY DREADFUL saga with PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS. John Logan, creator, writer and executive producer of the Emmy nominated series PENNY DREADFUL, will continue in those same roles. Joining him as an executive producer will be Michael Aguilar (KIDDING). Production is expected to begin in 2019. The announcement was made today by Gary Levine, President of Programming, Showtime Networks Inc.

A spiritual descendant of the PENNY DREADFUL story set in Victorian-era London, the next chapter opens in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with Mexican-American folklore and social tension. Rooted in the conflict between characters connected to the deity Santa Muerte and others allied with the Devil, PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS will explore an exciting mix of the supernatural and the combustible reality of that period, creating new occult myths and moral dilemmas within a genuine historical backdrop. This chapter is a bold new vision that will employ all new characters and storylines.

“We were so thrilled when John Logan came to us with this wildly original take on the Penny Dreadful mythology that explores both the human spirit and the spirit world here in California,” Levine said. “PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS promises to be an extraordinary saga of familial love set against the terrifying monsters that are around us and within us.

PENNY DREADFUL: CITY OF ANGELS will have a social consciousness and historical awareness that we chose not to explore in the PENNY DREADFUL London storylines,” Logan said. “We will now be grappling with specific historical and real world political, religious, social and racial issues. In 1938, Los Angeles was facing some hard questions about its future and its soul. Our characters must do the same. There are no easy answers. There are only powerful questions and arresting moral challenges. As always in the world of PENNY DREADFUL, there are no heroes or villains in this world, only protagonists and antagonists; complicated and conflicted characters living on the fulcrum of moral choice.”

PENNY DREADFUL premiered in 2014 and had a jaw-dropping third-season finale in June 2016. The series has been honored with 13 Primetime Emmy® nominations, as well as a Golden Globe® nomination for lead actress Eva Green, and won three BAFTA® Awards. PENNY DREADFUL has developed an incredibly loyal fanbase, lovingly called “The Dreadfuls,” that followed and rabidly commented on every twist and turn of the series.

PENNY DREADFUL is executive produced by John Logan and Michael Aguilar (KIDDING), along with Oscar winner Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall) and Pippa Harris (Revolutionary Road), both of Neal Street Productions. Logan's Desert Wolf Productions will produce, and James Bagley will serve as co-executive producer.

“We are honored to be working with Stephen King – a master storyteller who understands the importance of culturally embedded tales that resonate with audiences on a deeply personal level,” said Karey Burke, executive vice president, Programming and Development, Freeform. “We can’t wait for ‘Joyland’ to become part of Freeform’s offerings and haunt our viewers as only Stephen can.”

Bill Haber’s Ostar Productions (“Valor”) will serve as executive producer on “Joyland,” with Chris Peña (“Jane the Virgin”) and Cyrus Nowrasteh (“The Stoning of Soraya M.”) set to write the pilot script and attached to produce.

My Review Of "The Heretics"

Directed by Chad Archibald, "The Heretics" is a occult / possession horror starring Nini Kiri, Ry Barrett, and Jorja Cadence. The film is a blend of folk fantasy horror and classic demonic transformation nightmare.

A young woman is abducted by a strange man who claims that a cult is hunting her. His goal is to protect her until sunrise but while restrained, she falls deathly ill. As her friends and family search for her, the source of her illness becomes more and more apparent. She's not sick…she's changing.

"The Heretics" is a complex,  layered thriller with ebbs and flows both suspenseful and chilling. The duality of to storyline seeming to mirror in pace and path collide into a familiar and terryifing union. One that puts together the puzzle pieces of this emotionally charged, part drama - all nightmare tale.

The acting and character development is a polished collection of characters that draw you into their situation completely. Aside from a few minor flaws with ansilary parts, "The Heretics" is an intense character story in horror. The cast seems well seasoned, and this movie shows Archibald's vast forward movement into becoming one of the genre's notable great storytellers.

The special effects offer quality practical moments of visceral and psychological delights, with gory,  violent and bloody scenes that work on a Hollywood level. But lest you forget while watching "The Heretics", this is a indie horror that looks and feels like a indie film. It isn't start to finish splatter fest , nor is it constant body horror, but the movie unfolds so nicely that from story, to character development,  to those so good moments of horror,  "The Heretics" is well worth the watch. (4.5/5)

Raven Banner has picked up supernatural horror "Belzebuth" for international release. The film is directed by Emilio Portes and stars Joaquin Cosio, Tobin Bell, and Tate Ellington. Check out the first trailer release for "Belzebuth" below.

After losing his family in an extremely tragic way, Detective Ritter must investigate a massacre at a school perpetrated by a student. What seemed like a pretty clear case becomes much more dense when a priest of the Vatican appears with another point of view.

My Review Of "Betrayed"

"Betrayed" is a  crime thriller written and directed by Harley Wallen. The film stars John Savage, Billy Wirth, and Richard Tyson. The film blends organized crime, urban conflict and human trafficking in a dramatic story exploring corruption.

The mayor of Detroit ends his business with the Russian mob when young women are abducted and turn up drugged and dead. The best detectives (2 women) are put on the case. The Russians abduct the mayor's adult daughter as well for leverage.

Wallen's story is a straightforward deluge of corruption, crime, and gangsters. Told in a mix of neo-drama and mystery noir , the film offers a look into the dark underbelly of society, dishonest officials exploiting their power, gangs and sex trafficking young girls all on the mean streets od Detroit.

The directing and camera work are impressive in "Betrayed". The production is driven and focused, creating an indie stripped down formulaic product. Unfortunately the flow and consistency moving the main story arc is slightly disjointed and at times confusing to follow.

The acting is two-sided,  on one hand John Savage and Richard Tyson give quality performances when on screen, but unfortunately there are so many of the cast who give less than good portrayals. The characters are recognizable tropes familiar to this genre, but there really isn't enough originality to elevate the characters. Overall "Betrayed" lacked a strong performance and a level of action to really create the good movie that it should have been. (2.5)
