“Jug Face” Gets A Release Date

Jug-Face-PosterThe modern “folky” horror flick “Jug Face” has been given a release date. The picture will be available VOD on July 8th with a theatrical release to follow on Aug. 9th. “Jug Face” is directed by Chad Crawford Kinkle and stars Sean Young (Blade Runner), Larry Fessenden (The Last Winter), Lauren Ashley Carter (The Woman, Premium Rush), Daniel Manche (The Girl Next Door), and Sean Bridgers (The Woman, Sweet Home Alabama). There is a lot of visual use of post modern-primitivism used stylistically in the flick which makes it one to watch for me personally-being rural white trash and all!

The pit has spoken. Dawai, the potter of a backwoods community, has crafted a face on a ceramic jug of the person that the pit wants sacrificed. Ada, pregnant with her brother’s child, has seen her face on the jug and hides it in the woods, determined to save the life of her unborn. If she does not sacrifice herself, however, the creature from the pit will kill everyone in the village until she does.

Psychotic Saturdays! Six Twisted Flicks From The Decade Of Grunge

psychotic saturdaysTime for another Psychotic Saturdays! Movie post. This Saturday I have chosen six superbly twisted flicks from that neo-hippie groovy-witchy decade of long ago! No I don’t mean the 60’s. I am talking about the 1990’s-the time of grunge. The angrier social revolution and anti establishment movement. That time gave us some great music but some very mediocre movies. There where some that stood out for trying to blend the old 80’s slasher style and atmosphere with the newer grittier psycho that related to the 90’s distortion. So for this Psychotic Saturdays! sit back, relax and take in the twisted psychotica of the piss golden days of 1992! I have started with the lighter satirical psychos so that it is a build to the darker scarier crazy that comes on with the night.

Delicatessen

delicatessen“Delicatessen” is an import black comedy that is heavy on the black. The satire comes from France and is twisted to say the least. Directed by Marc Caro, Jean-Pierre Jeunet and starring Pascal Benezech, Dominique Pinon, Marie-Laure Dougnac. The film is very post modern – apocalyptic avat garde.
The story is centered on a microcosm of a post-apocalyptic society where food is so rare it's invaluable and is used as currency. The story centers on an apartment building with a delicatessen on the ground floor. The owner of the eatery also owns the apartment building and he is in need of a new maintenance man since the original "mysteriously" disappeared. A former clown applies for the job and the butcher's intent is to have him work for a little while and then serve him to quirky tenants who pay the butcher in, of course, grain. The clown and butcher's daughter fall in love and she tries to foil her father's plans by contacting the "troglodytes", a grain eating sub-group of society who live entirely underground. The "trogs" are possibly the most sensible of the lot, as they see food as food and not money.

Dr. Giggles

dr“Dr. Giggles” isn’t really all that grungy compared to the other films in this list but it was one of the few hold out movies that played up on the whole 80’s slasher-rama vibe. The story held a more satire element that drew from darker corners of the crazy which is why I still enjoy this film. Directed by Manny Coto and starring Larry Drake, Holly Marie Combs, Cliff De Young and Glenn Quinn.
The psychopathic son of a mass-murdering doctor, escapes from his mental institution to seek revenge on the town where his father was caught. The giggling doctor kills his victims with a surgical theme. His goal being to give one of the townfolk a heart transplant.

Man Bites Dog

man bites dog“Man Bites Dog” is another bizarre French language twisted flick. It is a truly black comedy that toys with the line between humanity and truth to art. The film is directed by Rémy Belvaux, André Bonzel and Benoît Poelvoorde. It stars Benoît Poelvoorde, Jacqueline Poelvoorde-Pappaert,Nelly Pappaert and Hector Pappaert. The 90’s became the decade to fall in love with French Indie cinema as referenced to in countless American Indie flicks. At least all the references were what prompted me to really seek out foreign films instead of just taking what made it’s way into Vid collection at the local Blockbuster.
A camera crew follows a serial killer/thief around as he exercises his craft. He expounds on art, music, nature, society, and life as he offs mailmen, pensioners, and random people. Slowly he begins involving the camera crew in his activities, and they begin wondering if what they're doing is such a good idea, particularly when the killer kills a rival and the rival's brother sends a threatening letter.

Raising Cain

raising cain
“Raising Cain” was a darker edgier psycho flick that was as equally creepy as seeing Lithgow in ‘Dexter’. The film was directed by Brian De Palma and stars John Lithgow, Lolita Davidovich, Steven Bauer Frances Sternhagen and Gregg Henry.
Jenny Nix, wife of eminent child psychologist Carter Nix, becomes increasingly concerned about her husband's seemingly obsessive concern over the upbringing of their daughter. Her own adulterous affair with an old flame, however, causes her to neglect her motherly duties until a spate of local kidnappings forces her to accept the possibility that he may be trying to recreate the twisted mind-control experiments of his discreditied psychologist father.

Happy Hell Night

happy hell night“Happy Hell Night” was a great dark b-horror flick that I love. It keeps the tone of classic VHS horror but with a story and atmosphere that was all 90’s. The film was directed by Brian Owens and stars Larry Robinson, Lisa Nichols, Sam Rockwell and Irfan Mensur. The flick is straight up psycho goodness that manages to hold on to the then fading 80’s horror vision while still allowing for a more 19’s pulse to flow through the film.
25 years ago at Winfield College, psycho-priest Zachary Malius murdered seven frat boys and was put away in the local asylum. Now, however, the same fraternity stages a prank from which Malius is inadvertently set free and returns to the house to repeat his crime.

Body Puzzle

blood puzzle“Body Puzzle” was directed by Lamberto Bava and stars Joanna Pacula, Tomas Arana, François Montagut and Gianni Garko. The flick is perfect 90’s giallo that chills in a truly twisted fashion. A police officer makes a terrible discovery during the investigation of a series of murders: Each victim has a transplanted organ from the same man.

Pagan Festival Shout Out! Festival Of Carna

carnaJune 1st is the Festival Of Carna! She is Goddess of protection, and of health and well-being of humans, especially small children. She presided over the intestines, heart, and other human organs. Some scholars have described Carna as being a Goddess of good digestion. When parents appealed to Carna, this Goddess would enter the home and perform certain rites to bar a strix from entering the house. The strix was sort of a supernatual screech owl. If this evil creature could, it would fly in at night and eat a sleeping child's intestines so the child would not get good nourishment and waste away. Romans traditionally gathered with their family on this day, offering Carna beans and pork to thank her for continued good health. To symbolize this I am doing a small meal of ham and beans (probably add a rice dish in there too).

Eating this dish on this day was said to protect one's internal organs and bring health for the following year. The poet Ovid, though he confuses Her with the Goddess Cardea, says that the association of these simple foods with this Goddess proves Her great antiquity. These offerings were made in a sacred grove in which Carna was said to live, down by the Tiber river, and which was dedicated to the otherwise unknown God Alernus (or Helernus).Carna had a sanctuary on the Caelian Hill, the most south-eastern of the seven hills, traditionally vowed by L. Junius Brutus, the very first consul (whose surname means "Idiot", by the by) on the 1st of June at the very beginning of the Roman Republic, which is usually said to have been around 510 BCE. This sanctuary or temple may have stood for a good 700 years, as it is mentioned in the writings of Tertullian, a 3rd century Christian who was trained as a lawyer. However, he calls Her a Hinge-Goddess (that is, Cardea), so perhaps he had the wrong Goddess (and wrong shrine) too.

Carna is still confused with Cardea, the Goddess of Door-hinges, which is Ovid's fault; they are not related at all, merely having similar names. The story I've given under Cardea, where She protects a child from vampires with whitethorn, was told of Carna by Ovid; though he hopelessly mixes Them up, the Goddess in the tale does offer the vital organs of a pig as substitute for those of the child attacked by the vampire, so perhaps Carna was meant after all, as the vital organs are Her subject.

Red Band Trailer For “7 Faces Of Jack The Ripper”

Listen to the screams and mayhem of the rebirth of the Jack the Ripper legend. Indie flick “7 Faces Of Jack The Ripper” have unleashed their modern telling of the gruesome monster himself directed by Timothy Woodward Jr. Check out the NSWF trailer below and read the press release posted by Uncle Creepy @ (DreadCentral).

7facesofjacktheripperFrom the Press Release
125 Years ago the world's most notorious serial killer terrorized the streets of London, earning the name ‘Jack the Ripper’.
The horrific slayings and infamous unsolved case are being brought to life in a new adaptation, 7 Faces of Jack the Ripper, featuring Timothy Woodward, Jr., Jeremy London, Said Faraj, Antwon Tanner, Patrick Kilpatrick, Jerry G. Angelo, and Mindy Robinson.
This modern adaptation takes place in the streets of Los Angeles, where a copycat killer is not only inspired by a true story but also based in part on the actual psychiatric case files of a leading Jack the Ripper suspect which were recently made public by the mental institution where he was detained for years.
With the overwhelmingly positive response to recently released horror/thriller feature Finders Keepers: The Root of All Evil, and with the buzz surrounding the highly anticipated psychological thriller Blackout starring Timothy Woodward, Jr., and ‘Hollywood King of Horror’ Bill Oberst, Jr., Woodward has decided to continue his exploration of the horror genre with a grisly modern-day rendition of infamous serial killer Jack the Ripper.
The film, which Woodward both acts in and directs, has tentatively been titled 7 Faces of Jack the Ripper and has garnered a shockingly impressive cast. In addition to Woodward, the all-star cast includes Jeremy London (Mallrats, "Party of Five"), Antwon Tanner ("One Tree Hill", Coach Carter), Said Faraj (The Green Zone), Patrick Kilpatrick (Minority Report), Matt Cinquanta (The Joker Returns), Mindy Robinson (Casting Couch), and Jerry G. Angelo (Spared).
The film, produced by Sky Studios International and Fireborn Studios, is aiming for a October 2013 release. It follows a homicide task force (Woodward, London, Kilpatrick, Faraj) as they hunt down an elusive serial killer with a flair for the dramatics and an obsession with the 125-year-old unsolved Jack the Ripper murders.

The Drifting Abyss-Can You See Them Fighting to Come Through

Artwork: Drifting Abyss
drifting abyss
Demon In The Mist is a novel-my first novel-about woman who sets out to find answers about the disappearance of her next door neighbors. The story is set in Appalachia. After a stranger comes to her door, seeking the same answers she is, together they embark on a journey into horror and legend. In this story several other notable characters come forward,  also learning  the truth behind the legends of the Demon that lurks in the mountains, awaking to feed in cold months until the next spring.

Demon In The Mist is a story of magic, shamanism and nightmare which sets Karen Ison and her companions on their true path to destiny. In the end not all of Karen's companions will survive the horrors of the Demon in the mist, but then again Death is such a relative term that holds little finality on a cosmic scale. There is magic in the light and in the sun. There is also magic in the shadow and the abyss. The veil that separates the worlds of creation and destruction are in a constant struggle between balance and chaos and it is up to Karen and her friends to save the realm of Man from the Realm of the demons.

Poster And Teaser For “Slash” Released

Crowd Funding Started For “Evolutionary”

evolutionaryA crowd funding campaign has started up for British sci-fi horror “Evolutionary”. The campaign is to kick off a short film that inevitably will be part of a bigger picture envisioned for feature film release. The project is set to be directed by Oliver Crawford Check out the promo clip and read the story for the film below.

The story:
Sector 13 are an elite Special Forces team. Their mission - to hunt and eliminate vigilante alien terrorist cells. For the past 50 years they have patrolled the earth, clearing the planet of any rogue beings who pose a threat to the military led government.

For months they have pursued one of the high ranking members of a renowned terrorist group known as ‘EVO’. Having finally tracked down its whereabouts to an abandoned warehouse, Sector 13’s Red and Blue teams move in for the kill. However, once inside they soon discover that the creature they set out to hunt is now hunting them.

Taking influence from classic sci-fi sources, ‘Evolutionary’ plays with the preconceptions of the audience and their perceptions of what they consider to be ‘alien’. Using traditional ‘physical’ special effects and expert stunt performers, ‘Evolutionary’ aims to push the limits of short filmmaking to a new level.

Trailer Released For “Sadako 2” 3D

Sadako2 posterThe trailer has dropped for the ghost horror “Sadako 2” which will be in 3D. The sequel of this Japanese thriller will scar audiences in that country on August 30th. Tsutomu Hanabusa helms this addition to a genre that Japan manages to dominate with a  cool cast. Miori Takimoto, Koji Seto, Kokoro Hirasawa, Satomi Ishihara, and Yusuke Yamamoto. Koji of course is also a J-Rock sensation (I have this weird attraction to J-Rock and Korean Pop-that is how I recognized him in the trailer.) Plus he is also a staple in the hit franchise “Kamen Rider”. Anyway check out the chilling and intense trailer for “Sadako 2” below.

Several years have passed since the "cursed video clip" incidents. There is a mysterious outbreak of multiple deaths, but the cause is unknown. At the same time, there are many incidents of disappearance. Perhaps it is an outbreak of some new kind of virus, or intentional terrorist activity? During the ongoing investigation, it is established that there is some kind of relationship to the "cursed video clip" incidents that occurred a few years earlier. A mysterious little girl holds the key to solving the story. Does this little girl have some kind of connection to Sadako? When all of the incidents are linked as one, the ultimate extent of the mystery is revealed.

Ventures In Validating The Paranormal: My Interview With “Provoked” Star Chris O’Reilly

Chris OReillyChris O’Reilly plays the lead in the paranormal thriller “Provoked”, a budding investigator determined to make contact with the spirit world-and capture the proof to back it up. His character “Matt” pushes forward the notion that -by any means necessary-he will encounter the dead, even to the point of going to extreme measures to do so. What those measures are O’Reilly would not tell me in our recent interview. I tried but we will just have to watch the film to find out. Personally I am hoping for a Ouija board or some sort of blood ritual. Those seem to work wonders when teasing the unseen forces around us.

Chris O’Reilly lives in Massachusetts,  but having traversed to many destinations here and abroad, the actor still holds an affection for Dublin-one of the many places he has called home. The one thing that has been a constant foundation for the guy is his love for the stage, telling me that “ Ever since I can remember acting was always more than a hobby for me. I've always loved being on stage and creating new characters and voices.” And according to his New England Actor’s page that is something he is quite good at-characters and voices-even being able to mimic any personality or vocal technique-well almost. O’Reilly’s resume reads more than what “hobby” gives justice to, having also trained in Stage Combat and Jazz, not to mention managing over twenty dance productions. Two fascinating facts about the actor is that he can juggle and considers being a red head a skill-which shows he has a wicked sense of humor. To find out about Chris O’Reilly’s character in “Provoked” and a bit more about the actor himself check out my interview with him.

ASouthernLife: In "Provoked" you play Matt an amateur paranormal investigator, can you tell me more about the character, what drives his fascination with ghost hunting?
Chris O’Reilly: Matt is, like you said, an AMATEUR paranormal investigator and he knows this. He wants nothing more than to be able to experience an actual event that can both open his eyes a little more in this realm of the paranormal and can also give him some validation as a "Ghost Hunter". I think that's what ultimately drives him. His yearning to experience something real.

ASouthernLife: Your character uses potentially dangerous and "maybe" unethical means to stimulate the entities, can you say anything about what it is he does to provoke the spirits?
Chris O’Reilly: Ya know, I could, but I don't really want to. Hahah I want you to see it rather than hear about it. I can tell you why he does it though. He's just at the end of his rope. Spending hours upon hours in houses scanning and recording and consistently coming up with nothing. Imagine you put so much time and effort into something that you love and that you enjoy doing, yet you're always let down. Always. That's how 'Matt' felt.

ASouthernLife: How did you prepare for this role and what about Matt were you able to relate to?
Chris O’Reilly: Well, its funny because 'Matt' is, at least in my mind, a normal guy. The only thing that's out of the norm about him is his passion and career path. But here's the thing, everyone has something in their life they love as much as their counterpart, its just a different kind of love. While 'Matt' loves 'Jamie' - who Nicole Lasala plays amazingly by the way - he also has a love for his career and I feel we all have that. Whether its investigating, painting, acting, dancing, even doing math equations, everyone has a second love that they hold in their heart so I related to that attribute 100%.
That being said, preparing for the role wasn't so much a mental shift but rather an educational one. I needed to learn terminology, correct movements and methods for K2 sweeps, even researching cameras and different lenses that would help capture the paranormal. Also, having a great girlfriend, real or fictional, on set helps you delve into a part and Nicole really helped that transition. She was fun to be on set with yet also extremely professional. That's a hard thing to find.

ASouthernLife: Before preparing for this role was the paranormal something that you were interested in personally? Had you been on an investigation before "Provoked"?
Chris O’Reilly: Actually yes. I've always loved paranormal stories and spiritual encounters that people talk about. A few times in college myself and a few others went on 'Ghost Hunts' and one time I swear I heard something talking to us. It was slightly jarring. And since we didn't drink until AFTER the hunt, I felt it was a real experience.

ASouthernLife: Would you ever consider using extreme measures to contact spirits?
Chris O’Reilly: Absolutely, 100% not. I'd rather not mess with something I can't see.

ASouthernLife: Growing up were there a lot of local legends about haunted places where you lived? Did you ever explore any of the ghost stories to see if they were true or not?
Chris O’Reilly: Not really. I used to look up stories in libraries and rent movies based on legends though. I love those kinds of things.

ASouthernLife: Did you experienced anything paranormal on set while filming "Provoked"?
Chris O’Reilly: Sadly I didn't really, but some others said they had chills within the Borden house. I know Sean felt eyes upon him during an investigation they did.

ASouthernLife: What has it been like filming in the Lizzie Borden house?
Chris O’Reilly: It was amazing. Not only to be filming in the house, but also to be able to read about history and theories on what had occurred. I had gone on a tour of the house years ago, so this time was kind of like round two, just more in depth and personal.

ASouthernLife: Who in the cast do you think would be easily scared by a paranormal event?
Chris O’Reilly: Oh God, that's an easy one. Ms. Nicole Lasala. Followed closely by Kati Salowsky though. ...And maybe Jordan. He talks a big game but...

ASouthernLife: What are some of your favorite horror movies?
Chris O’Reilly: My favorite horror movies are ''The Exorcism of Emily Rose', '28 Days Later', and 'Shaun of the Dead'. I know the last two aren't technically "horror" movies, but I love Zombie films and anything that Simon Pegg does so I'm writing it down.

ASouthernLife: What is the scariest ghost story you have ever heard?
Chris O’Reilly: Any story with a little girl demon or ghost...or dolls. Little girl ghosts and dolls scare the shit out of me.

Crowd Funding Started For Dark Chiller "Aneurysm"

aneurysmThe crowd funding site is now up for psychological nightmare film “Aneurysm”. The project is dark character study of a man with one sick mind-or is it the result of something more dire. The film is the “brain” child of Damien Sage and follows Jack York., a young young, prosperous architect who snaps after receiving some devastating news about his well being. The story was loosely inspired by the tragic events of Sandy Hook and the brutal slaying of L.A. Police Officers by one of their own. Actually those are just a few of the recent radom acts of mass shooting and senseless violent episodes, that seem to be truly Americana, which have inspired this chiller.

Read the full story deets below and watch the promo. Then  head over to Kickstarter to check it out more about this project.
Inspired loosely by the scores of 'seemingly random' tragedies, past and present; such as Columbine, Sandy Hook, Charles Whitman the notorious "Clock Tower Shooter" and the recent manhunt for murderous LAPD Officer Christopher Dorner; 'Aneurysm' follows three nightmarish days in the life of young, prosperous architect Jack York.

Jack is given terrible news on the eve of his fifth straight 'Humanitarian of the Year' win; he has a massive blood clot that will surface as an aneurysm in the Limbic System of his brain. This aneurysm will kill him, instantly; or in the slimmest chance, leave him functionally invalid for the rest of his life.

Devastated because he wont be able to witness the birth and life of his first child, Jack goes into an emotional tailspin. Lost in dealing with so many things bigger than himself; death, destiny and the closure of his life, Jack searches for solace and the answers to troubling problems that have plagued is life. Then, the aneurysm hits.

But, instead of killing Jack, the aneurysm eviscerates his mind, sending him on a day long, city wide killing spree that ends up destroying everyone and everything important in his life and exposes the world at large to something far darker than just your average, everyday tragedy... Something that will change the face of humanity, forever.

Aneurysm (who's script was compared to the works of "Stephen King" by legendary Scream Queen Adrienne Barbeau) isn't just another horror film, or thriller, it is a dramatic study of the psychological and medical factors that can and do lead to the every day tragedies that punctuate the fabric of our existence. It is also the first chapter in a planned trilogy that will explore the overarching consequences these tragedies have on humanity as a whole.

Pagan Festival Shout Out! Einherjar

Minor modern AsatruMay 30th is Einherjar, a Norse festival to celebrate the fallen warriors in battle and honor their journey to Valhalla. Corresponds with the modern American holiday of Memorial Day. In Norse mythology, the einherjar (Old Norse "single (or once) fighters") are those that have died in battle and are brought to Valhalla by valkyries. In Valhalla, the einherjar eat their fill of the nightly-resurrecting beast Sæhrímnir, and are brought their fill of mead (from the udder of the goat Heiðrún) by valkyries. The einherjar prepare daily for the events of Ragnarök, when they will advance for an immense battle at the field of Vígríðr; the battle which the "ein" (here meaning single-time) refers to.
