The official poster has been released for the latest installment of "Wrong Turn" franchise. "Wrong Turn: The Foundation" is directed by Mike P. Nelson from a script by Alan B. McElroy. It stars Charlotte Vega as Jes, alongside her co-stars Matthew Modine, Bill Sage, Emma Dumont, Valerie Jane Parker, Chaney Morrow, David Hutchison, Damian Maffei, Dylan McTee, Adrian Favela, Adain Bradley, Jeremy Ambler, Cory Scott Allen, Gary Ray Stearns, Rhyan Elizabeth hiHanavan, Vardaan Arora, Mark Mench, Joshua Stephen Campbell, Jennie Malone, Brian James Fitzpatrick, and Mark Angel. A group of unlucky friends to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia to spend a couple days hiking the Appalachian Trail. In this one, they are confronted by “The Foundation”, a community of people who have lived in the mountains since before the Civil War – oh, and they don’t take well to strangers.
"The Dwelling" is a supernatural horror directed by Jeff Maher. The film stars Colin Price, Alysa King, Gwenlyn Cumyn, Dennis Andres, George Krissa, Hamza Fouad, and Alex Loubert. It returns to the classic story telling, blending gothic fantasy with surreal horror. Four people find themselves stuck on a haunted antique bed where leaving means suffering a gruesome death. Plagued with frightening hallucinations, they must figure out the bed's secrets before they are ultimately picked off one by one. At first glance I expected "The Dwelling" to be a spoof, gimmick flick like "Killer Sofa" or "The Selling". What I watched was a cool return to classic horror filled with gothic supernatural themes and 80's spaghetti thriller suspense. The story is unique, filled with contrast, and manages to make an inanimate object truly terrifying. It starts of with a dark, occult-laden opening sequence that actually makes a story about a possessed bed seem plausible without using humor. It sets the tone. The acting is quality, some characters have more depth than others but the point-of-view, and writing allow the cast to be impressive on screen. Plus the writing is layered, almost meta level story telling. The horror never really fades away from those captivating first scenes. The asthetics, lighting and suspense flows through the majority of the movie. There is one area in the first half that is a bit dull, offering a very generic character driven plot point- mostly meant to introduce us to the ill-fated cast. Still it is the only real moments that the story falls short, and it doesn't last long. "The Dwelling" has an almost Clive Barker visceral feel, blended with a surrealist look. The gore is up front and allows for some quality gore moments. The dark tone never gets broken up too much. So everything stays in that traditional horror area. I found myself looking forward to what was coming next. Plus the soundtrack and cinematography is classic. Overall I enjoyed "The Dwelling". The story is entertaining and interesting. The suspense and horror stays true to more conventional constructs. The movie is fun without needing comedy to legitimize its premise. Plus the layered storyline with the extra supernatural elements is one of the better ones I have seen in cinema. Definitely check this one out! (4/5)
Sci-fi drama "Ellipse" is a blend of comedy and observational melodrama. The film is directed by Joe Bland and Grant Martin. It stars Josiah Authier and Grant Martin. A intergalactic military surveyor and his canine partner are on a solo fight near an undefined, oval-shaped planet. Because of his self-destructive coping methods, a simple fly-by soon turns into an emergency crash landing. Stranded and stripped of the chemicals to feed his addiction, he and his dog must face an unforgiving planet with impending death lurking all around. The story has emotional depth written into the concept, with subject matter revolving around loss and sorrow. Unfortunately there is never a moment that allows the viewer to connect or get a sense of that emotion. Almost every moment is tore down by spoofy humor and "Dad joke" silliness. The story arc is more or less a series of unfortunate events leading up to one miraculous stretch of the imagination. The acting is a mix of one-liners, coordinated stunt drama and deep exposition that seems to get lost in fantasy fodder. The best thing going for "Ellipse" is the genuine attachment you develop for the dog in the story. There isn't much opportunity to develop a real connection with the lead human actor because comedy cuts that cord each and every time. The special effects are the expected blend of low budget CGI like what is seen on the Syfy channel, and Game play stuff. Beyond a few noticable sci-fi elements everything about this movie looks like the here-and-now. The film does have a decent soundtrack and the cinematography is quality- minus the generic "male model fashion video-esque" moments. Overall I was disappointed with "Ellipse". I expected a bit more sci-fi in a film that is supposed to be all sci-fi. Still I could have accepted that if the schtick hadn't stepped over the only legitimate story element- the subject of loss, mortality, and the pain associated with the human experience. Plus as heartfelt as the ending was it felt a little bit unnecessary. But I was all about the dogs storyline. (2/5)
"Marla" is a body horror with a medical nightmare element. The film is directed by Lisa van Dam-Bates, who also stars. It costars Travis Johnny Ware, Jason Stange and Katie Hemming."Marla is a dark thriller with depressive themes, a hint of scifi and a heavy dose of feminism. The film explores the terrifying account of a girl who goes to get an IUD implanted by a family friend turned doctor who then commits a deranged act. The event has deadly implications for those close to her. The story is intriguing and weird with some intense subject matter and riddled with metaphor. It maintains a steady and hypnotic flow that keeps many elements of the story engaging enough to make you wanna see how things end. There is a suspense and almost hopelessness hanging over the film. At times it amplifies the darkness and at other moments the atmosphere feels too weighted. The cast giving strong performances for the most part, there are a few times the dialog gets clumsy. A couple of the actors seem a bit disconnected from the story and their character. Still"Marla" has some quality moments where you see the talent shine. Namely the lead actress and her ill-fated boyfriend (spoiler- kind of). Between the acting and the truly unique story idea it will be up to the individual to decide if it all worked for this movie. The special effects are really cool. Practical choices were made and there is an almost delightful celebration of gore inspired deaths. The film is no where near the notion of realism. It is unapologetically expressionist fantasy and it extends to the horror elements as well. The death sequences were my favorite moments in the movie. Overall "Marla" will leave just as many fans disappointed and confused. There are some wholes that linger in the story. I got a vibe that was more viral nightmare than implanted mad science. Still Lisa van Dam-Bates creates n evocative and affecting horror story that will speak to a lot of horror fans. I think this is a film worth checking out. (2.5/5)
