My Review Of “The Haunting Of Harry Payne”

The Haunting Of Harry Payne“The Haunting Of Harry Payne” is a British horror film written by John Mangan and directed by Martyn Pick. It is a atmospheric thriller starring Tony Scannell, Graham Cole, Anouska Mond, Fliss Walton, Katy Manning, P.H. Moriarty and Neil Maskell. The plot follows Harry Payne who lives a very unsettled life even as an ex-gangster now seeking a new start after his release from incarceration. After settling in a small community to be near his wife committed to a close by hospice for mental issues, more troubles come to Harry Payne. He becomes the prime suspect of a series of brutal murders while dealing with the reputation that has followed him. However there are more maleficent works at play. “The Haunting Of Harry Payne” is a modern blend of supernatural thriller and murder mystery twisted into one chillingly good tale.

The story of “The Haunting Of Harry Payne” isn’t over-complicated or extremely complex but there is enough depth within this drama to keep you enthralled from start to finish. With just enough layers of past, and present to build the characters and still keep you in suspense. Thankfully the actors all give stellar performances that bring the story alive convincingly without overstating or becoming a hindrance. Plus the ending is one that I did not see coming at all. And the supernatural element is a creepy, haunting one that rises to a delightful finale that does not disappoint.

The effects and kills are on the tamer side of horror with most of the deaths taking place just beyond camera’s reach-so gore-hounds may be a bid disappointed. However I don’t think they will be any less entertained by the deaths because they are more classical moments that tease the brutality with screams, blood-splatter and a few moments of carnage but all in context. The story is a really mature, well executed blend of all the elements that make film’s like this practically brilliant on the whole. “The Haunting Of Harry Payne” is a film that should entertain almost any horror fan!

“The Truck” Revs Up For Release

The TruckRiley Hollow Films has released the second theatrical trailer and a new poster to coincide with the DVD release of their feature length road horror film “The Truck”.

”The Truck” is the second feature length film written and directed by Lee Vervoort, following his breakthrough movie Gun Town. The new movie debuted recently at a gala premiere in Lafayette Kentucky where the movie was filmed, to rave reviews. Vervoort is taking the movie on the road, setting up screenings and special events in support of the independent film. Vervoort said of this unconventional approach "We plan to premier the film around the United States as much as we can by way of theater rental and other venues willing to show it. It's a good way to get the film seen in front of a variety of audiences in addition to conventions and such."

The DVD is available now at Amazon along with 18x24 inch posters. It boasts several special features including a blooper reel, behind the scenes interviews with the cast & crew, and a full length audio commentary with writer/director Lee Vervoort and Director of Photography Jim Dougherty.

“The Truck” stars John Michael Morris as Roger Newman, and Rachelle Christine as Alice Mason. The movie also co-stars Jenna Nichole Ruiz playing a teenage hitch hiker, and re-teams Vervoort with members of his Gun Town cast, Tim Emery and Andy Grace. The film was shot in western Kentucky by cinematographer Jim Dougherty. The film was scored by Danny Lee Ramsey who also makes a special appearance in the film.

“The Truck” was Executive Produced by husband and wife team, Ronald Harry Dunn and Faith Diane Dunn. Vervoort shares producer credit with another husband & wife team Tim & Carole Emery of Copper Canyon Ranch L.L.C. Cameron McCasland serves as co-producer. Vervoort & McCasland have previously collaborated on both “Gun Town” and “The Lashman”.

My Review Of “Aeon The Last Vampyre On Earth”

aeon“Aeon: The Last Vampyre On Earth” is a dramatic thriller from director Daniel Falicki and stars April Basile, Daniel Falicki, Chris Eddy, Joseph Charles McIntosh in what turns out to be a surprisingly suspenseful, intense film. The story focuses on the philosophical debate between the last of two surviving species. One, a millennial creature of the night, both primal and superior, the other is the last of the human race. Fleeing a cataclysm of unimaginable origin, Catherine Murnau finds refuge in a warehouse that is barely standing after an apocalyptic extinction event. She and Aeon, the last vampyre battle wits and each other. Through the course of the story Catherine shows enough fortitude to engage the eternal in an inquisitive dialog which reveals a history of the planet and humanity far different than the one she knows.

“Aeon: The Last Vampyre On Earth” is a taut melodrama with some pretty intense suspense. The bulk of which hinges on the ability of the two actors portraying the nightmarish colloquy during the devastating end of the world. An ability which comes through very well due to the commitment the actors give to these two characters. The back-and-forth coupled with the chilling, dingy surrounding makes for one heck of an atmospheric thriller. At times the character of Aeon seems to surpass Catherine in delivering some mesmerizing confab but the two really bring the viewer in to the story completely. It is worth mentioning that Aeon is truly refreshing as a throwback to a gothic, non-romanticized vampire in this story. No hunky, ultra-fab, trendy vamp here, just a terrifying, primal creature far superior in knowledge and ability.

Now the production and effects in “Aeon: The Last Vampyre On Earth” is on the low budget side but executed with enough passion and vision that it never takes from the over all visual concept. The action is on a very low level as well with most of the chills and suspense relying on dramatic accentuation combined with sound effects-which at times made me jump. There are moments that the story falters somewhat toward indulgence but never completing reaches the point to become unwatchable. Mostly the film is a classic and timeless allegory of humanity and morality. Overall “Aeon: The Last Vampyre On Earth” is a very cool, and captivating melodrama, one that has me believing that it is worthy of some theatrical stage production in a small off Broadway sort of way.

New Survival Horror “Vitals” Plays On Old Legend

vitalsThe old legend of nightmare organ harvest has been around forever-since the classic age of storytelling I would suspect, although it does seem to be more attributed to the modern era. Anyway before I ramble, back to the chilling tale at hand. Organ harvesting is the macabre subject to be featured in Marc Morgenstern’s film “Vitals”. “Vitals” has Morgenstern as producer, writer and director of the modern spin on the urban legend that will star Tim Russ, Christopher Showerman, Charlene Amoia, Claudia Wells and Sachin Mehta. The film will combine many fearful notions such as abandonment, fear of physical violation and foreign abduction. All written from a Hitchcockian aspect in style and vision.

When a man, an unassuming electrician wakes up in an abandoned Mexican motel room in a tub of ice and his kidney missing, he knows he only has a certain amount of time to find help.

With his wife being held in the next room. Using his skills as an electrician and the items available to them from his wife's purse, they must beat the clock and escape before the members of the organization return and harvest the rest of their organs.

Trailer Released For “Army Of Frankensteins”

army of frankensteinsCheck out the trailer for sci-fi/action horror “Army Of Frankensteins”. The film is directed by Ryan Bellgardt and stars John Ferguson, Jordan Farris, Christian Bellgardt, Lucas Ross, Rett Terrell, Raychelle McDonald. The film is a time traveler pic that has a young man traveling back to the time of the Civil War and a battle that features an Army of Frankensteins. How is that for period and genre bending!

After a failed attempt to propose to his girlfriend, Alan Jones is beaten to within an inch of his life by a street gang and taken to a mysterious lab where Dr. Tanner Finski and his kid genius assistant perform horrible experiments on him hoping to re-animate a Frankenstein. The experiments lead to a hole being ripped in space and time, manifesting an Army of Frankensteins from hundreds of parallel universes and sending them all back to the 19th century, directly into the heart of a bloody battle between the North and South.

My Review Of “All The Devils Aliens”

All-The-Devils-Aliens“All The Devils Aliens” is a bizarre piece of surreal melodrama that brings plenty of chills. The film is directed by Daniel Falicki and the title is listed as on IMDb as “Devils In The Darkness”, a title I like much more than the one being used is distribution. Anyway that isn’t the important part. “All The Devils Aliens” has some pretty impressive avant-styled acting with a cast that includes   David Gries, Lisa Mueller, Joseph Scott Anthony, Shirley Clemens and Joshua Lieske. There is a supporting cast of creatures that accompany these very human afflicted characters that play as much apart of bringing the creepy to this film-so kudos to them. “ATDA” follows Mike Hill, a caregiver who takes a job assisting in the care of reclusive and eccentric retiree Stanton Pinborough. The pisser in this story is that Pinborough has a reason for eccentric character quirks because he nabbed a small infant alien from the crash debris recovered at the infamous Roswell incident. Now plagued by the “familial clan” of the small creature, Stanton Pinborough is reduced to the remnants of a tragic past and insanity.

The story in “All The Devils Aliens” picks up with Pinborough at the latter state, as he is locked away in his quarters, cared for by Mike Hill, along with Robin Bradbury-the senior caregiver after a series of mysterious disappearances and rushes quitting's of various other home health nurses has left her in the position. The anchored dramatics of the story that mostly deal with Mike and Robin interacting to the various things that begin to happen on this particular shift hold some pretty quality suspense and tension in the film. At times the acting does falter toward the unbelievable and forced, but it bounces back just as quickly. There are momentary breaks of sudden moments of action which is meant to scare the viewer while breaking from the dialog-those moments deliver. I found myself jumping at times and keeping a constant chill of anticipation for the next scene. The over all plot and end game of the film does remain elusive for the most part which often made me wonder if I was even watching something worth watching, however holding in there, the film amped up the thrilling nature of dramatics as the film moved along-I was pleasantly surprised at the full nature of this story.

The action/FX aspect of “All The Devils Aliens” were on the cheaper side, but the creativity to pull off those special effects moments works extremely well. The flare for dramatic in the last segment of the film becomes some bizarro, surreal nightmare sequence of craziness which gives us our aliens, the agenda, a flare for theatrics and total entertainment. This film is either the worst thing that a movie goer will see or it will be a great, witty, entertaining film- I had more times that I was totally involved, thrilled, and entertained to consider “All The Devils Aliens” horrible so I have to say that I found it entertaining. Not the greatest by far but far better than I was expecting. Some of the back-story seems a bit flimsy while watching but that flag burns fast after the big finale in the film. “All The Devils Aliens”, in spite of the faltering acting and cheaper effects, is a cool, creative sci-fi horror.
