My Review Of "A Young Man With High Potential"

Linus de Paoli's "A Young Man with High Potential" is a unsettling psychological thriller. The film stars Adam Ild Rohweder, Pit Bukowski, Paulina Galazka and Amanda Plummer. It is a chilling chamber piece offering a window into character degradation and lives lost.

Piet is a brilliant grad student but also painfully shy and socially inept. His lonely and sexually frustrated existence changes when he is forced to partner on a school project with the pretty and outgoing Klara. As they spend time together, Piet misinterprets her friendly personality and awkwardly professes his love to her. When Klara rejects his advance, Piet retreats into himself, becoming more obsessed with his “love” until one night when he drugs Klara and attempts to have sex with the unconscious woman, but when she begins to fight him off, he reacts in a violent way. What follows is a very long and horrifying aftermath that sends the man down a dark and despicable path. A disquieting tale reminiscent of the works of Lars von Trier and Michael Haneke.

The story is a slow burn, straight forward psychological drama that, much like the title character, spirals into darkness and horror. The thriller elements are subtle at first and the build up never really climaxes beyond the initial pace. But you know something bad is going to happen, you feel it in the small, nuanced mannerisms of Rowheder's character. There is a foreboding atmosphere that lingers through nearly every scene.

The casting choices here are brilliant choices. Especially Adam Ild Rohweder as Piet. He seems a little too comfortable and at ease in this character. A chilling, somewhat antisocial, seemingly harmless guy with a dark shadow nesting in his mind. It is a great performance. The rest of the acting feels just as natural. These are developed personas that breathe organically.

The horror comes. It takes a moment to manifest, but it hits hard. It isn't sensationalized, or glorified violence. There is no real embrace of exploitation. Everything is done carefully and almost authentically. More to the point of showing a bit more realism. That said, you can almost sense that this guy could have gone completely torture porn in his deprevity had it not been for the internal conflict taking place.

Overall "A Young Man With High Potential" is a wonderfully done, chilling psychological drama. The horror only exists pleonastically so don't think this is exploitation cinema. It is more reserved than one expects, but it is still a fully conceptualized downward spiral into a horrific event. The film is shot nicely and the practical effects and dark atmosphere, combined with a strong, timeless story make this movie worth watching. (4/5)

Pagan Festival Shout Out: Thesmophoria

The Thesmophoria (Ancient Greek: Θεσμοφόρια) was an ancient Greek religious festival, held in honor of the goddess Demeter and her daughter Persephone. The festival was held annually at Autumn during the period when Fall seeds were sown and harvests were brought in. It is time which celebrated human and agricultural fertility.

The Thesmophoria was one of the most widespread ancient Greek festivals. The fact that it was celebrated across the Greek world suggests that it dates back to before the Greek settlement in Ionia in the eleventh century BCE. The festival was dedicated to Demeter and her daughter Persephone and was celebrated in order to promote fertility, both human and agricultural. It was celebrated only by women, and men were forbidden to see or hear about the rites. However these are modern times and antiquated gender-biased concepts should be shed. Spiritual expression and ritual practice should be open to all who wish to participate. What god or goddess wouldn't welcome more worship from the devoted?

The festival lasted three days, although in Attica it was lengthened to five. The original days were Pyanopsion (October) 12–14 and were called respectively anodos (or kathodos), nēsteia, and kalligeneia. At least a great part of the Thesmophoria was carried out by torchlight and was accompanied by ceremonial coarse abuse.

IFC Midnight Acquires Rights To "The Other Lamb"

IFC Midnight has acquired North American rights to cult themed horror "The Other Lamb". The film is directed by Małgorzata Szumowska (BODY, MUG, ELLES) starring Raffey Cassidy (VOX LUX, THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER), Michiel Huisman (GAME OF THRONES, THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE), and Denise Gough (COLETTE, JULIET NAKED). written by award-winning Australian screenwriter Catherine S. McMullen (TWO SENTENCE HORROR STORIES). The screenplay was featured on the 2017 BLACK LIST, HIT LIST and BLOOD LIST and had its World Premiere as a Special Presentation at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival. The film most recently screened at the 2019 Fantastic Fest and is currently in competition at the 2019 BFI London Film Festival. Szumowska has previously won the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival 2015 for her film BODY and subsequently the Grand Jury Prize for her film MUG in 2018. IFC Midnight will release the film in 2020.

THE OTHER LAMB is a haunting and nightmarish tale that tells the story of Selah (Raffey Cassidy), a young girl born into an alternative religion known as the Flock. The members of the Flock – all women and female children – live in a rural compound, and are led by one man, known only as Shepherd (Michiel Huisman). Selah, a daughter who is on the cusp of teenage-hood, is an incredibly devoted follower, but begins to bond with Sarah (Denise Gough), an outcast wife who has grown skeptical of Shepherd’s teachings. Selah is given the great honor of participating in the sacred ritual of the birthing of the lambs - upon which they depend for survival - where she has a shocking and transformative experience. She begins to have strange visions that make her question her own reality, and everything the Shepherd has taught her and her sisters.

Arianna Bocco EVP of Acquisitions and Productions of IFC Films said, “THE OTHER LAMB is the perfect addition to our 2020 slate of boundary-pushing and auteur-driven titles. Malgo’s distinct, original, and commanding approach to the film is completely in line with our goal of broadening the definition of what genre film can be. We unanimously wanted to work with her.”

Director Małgorzata Szumowska added, “I couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with IFC on my English-language debut. Their history of championing auteurs from Europe in North America is incredible, and I’m very happy to join their roster of iconoclastic storytellers.”

The film was produced by Academy Award®-nominee David Lancaster and Stephanie Wilcox of Rumble Films (WHIPLASH, NIGHTCRAWLER, EYE IN THE SKY) together with Aoife O’Sullivan and Tristan Orpen Lynch of Subotica (MISS JULIE, 2014; YOUNG ONES, 2014), Danish producer Marie Gade Denessen of Zentropa (THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT, 2018; THE HUNT, 2012) and in co-production with Umedia (MY BRILLIANT FRIEND, 2019; MANDY, 2018). Executive produced by Julia Godzinskaya, Will Norton, and Sophie Vickers of Rooks Nest Entertainment and Jon Shiffman and Andrew Schwartzberg of Rumble Films. The film is made with the participation of Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland and is an official Irish-Belgian co-production.
The deal was negotiated by EVP of Acquisitions and Productions of IFC Films Arianna Bocco and Director of Acquisitions Aijah Keith with UTA Independent Film Group on behalf of the filmmakers. International sales are being handled by TrustNordisk.

Hilarious Hit Comedy/Horror Film "Garden Party Massacre" Hits Amazon Prime This Week!

Just in time for Halloween, Gregory Blair's award-winning screwball comedy meets slasher spoof GARDEN PARTY MASSACRE is now available to stream exclusively on Amazon Prime. The film has won handfuls of awards on the festival circuit: 'Best Feature Film,' 'Outstanding Horror/Comedy Feature,' ‘Best Director of the Year’ and more, including nine acting awards for the cast. Currently available only on DVD and Blu-ray, the Amazon Prime debut will be the premiere chance to see the film on VOD.

Beloved by audiences and critics alike, GARDEN PARTY MASSACRE is Blair's follow-up to his much-lauded DEADLY REVISIONS. His latest is a fast-paced, wacky spoof in the vein of Shaun of the Dead and Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. The fun begins when a friendly backyard gathering goes hilariously awry as an unexpected guest arrives. With a pickaxe. And an attitude.

Director Blair has talked about the film recently. He says of the Digital release: "we're excited to finally open the door and widen the audience through VOD." Blair also says of the changing Digital and home entertainment markets: "streaming has become the preferred home-viewing option and Amazon Prime is one of the leading platforms, so we thought that was a great place to start. But collectors will still want to get the DVD or Bluray, because we all know that physical media is the only way to guarantee you can watch the movie when you want, since streaming catalogues change all the time." GARDEN PARTY MASSACRE will be available in just a few days, on one of the largest Digital distributors currently online.

GARDEN PARTY MASSACRE is a PIX/SEE Productions film. It was released on DVD and Bluray through SGL Entertainment who will also be helming the VOD release. The film will be released on other VOD platforms closer to Christmas.  Finally, the film stars Andy Gates ("Grimm"), Nichole Bagby ("On The Rocks"), Lise Hart (Deadly Revisions), Gregory Blair ("Love That Girl"), Dawna Lee Heising (Samurai Cop2: Deadly Vengeance), Matt Weinglass ("Jimmy Kimmel Live!") and David Leeper.

My Review Of "Incredible Violence"

"Incredible Violence" is the debut feature of filmmaker G. Patrick Condon. The indie film is a quasi-autobiographical horror exploration into art and madness. It stars With M.J. Kehler, Stephen Oates, Michael Worthman, and Kimberley Drake.

G. Patrick Condon is a shitty filmmaker who has taken a loan from a group he shouldn't have gotten mixed up in. Now he's drank the money away and he owes them a horror movie. Grace, who has always dreamed of being a famous actress, is desperately trying to make it in the movie business. She gets her first big break in a horror flick, but there a few things unusual about this shoot. She and the rest of the cast will have to live in the house for the duration of the shoot, they aren't allowed to leave and will be recorded everywhere around the clock. Where does the movie begin and reality end? And, how far will Grace go to "make it"?

Condon has created a truly inventive story, taking common tropes from killer thrillers and exploitation cinema and putting a fresh spin on the standards. There is the classic psycho killer persona and a nice collection of young women. The story brings in elements of serial psychology and aspects of POV/CCTV that really grabs onto the whole guerilla filmmaking ideology. All blended in a storied span of comfortable and captivating cinematography.

"Incredible Violence" gets meta with all it's layered psychotica. At first I didn't think I would like the film. I expected it to fall apart and become a hot mess. Don't make that mistake when you set out to watch this movie. Condon does great at keeping the structure and continuity flowing. The acting varies from decent to great from scene to scene depending on the cast. Mostly I just became swept up in the story. That being said, there are a few moments that actions and dialog becomes clunky and muddled, but things rebound quickly.

The horror and violence is full frontal for most of the film's edgy, thriller scenes. It is brutal, exploitative and celebratory. However the cruelty and coldness has purpose. It isn't just for the sake of showing some blood stained flesh. It is shown in contrast to the antagonist's motivation. We are watching a movie of a movie in the making. One in which budget concerns and ingenuity are always an issue. Even flaws are arguably intentional, artistic elements. And superficially the kill sequences look good and at times intense.

Overall I enjoyed "Incredible Violence". It is creative and entertaining. The story is complex and complete. I found the characters to be fully developed, relatable characters instead of explotational fluff. The quality of the cinematography is nicely done considering the low-budget nature. The horror elements have purpose and maintain a gritty, affective quality. There are a few flaws but for the most part this is a indie horror worth checking out. (3.5/5)

My Review Of "She's Just A Shadow"

Self-described gangster fairytale "She's Just A Shadow" is written and directed by Adam Sherman. The film blends elements of pulp film, crime thriller and surrealism in a orgy-jnduced blood bath of drugs, sex and death. It stars Tao Okamoto (The Man in the High Castle, “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” “The Wolverine”), alongside Haruka Abe (“47 Ronin”) and Loka pop star Kihiro in his acting debut.

A beautiful Japanese madam. A deranged, drug-addled Tokyo gangster and his crew. A sadistic serial killer on the loose. The intersection of these stories, and the interior worlds of these characters, plays out against a dreamlike backdrop of ultra-violence and orgiastic sex as everyone tries futilely to rewrite their futures and cheat death. A dreamlike yet modern take on the gangster genre, SHE’S JUST A SHADOW is the action-packed story of a matriarchal crime family engaged in a vicious gang war, while a deranged killer is leaving his victims on railroad tracks all over Tokyo. The only thing more dangerous than the killer is the vicious love triangle within the family itself.

The story is a blend of traditional underground crime thriller exploration of sub-culture and more experimental risque imagery circling tropes such as sexploitation and torture porn. There is heavy influences that permeate the film, most notably Tarantino and Stahelski. The synopsis and my initial description make "She's Just A Shadow" seem like a very exciting film. And given the cinematography and set design for a lot of the scenes, this movie has some cool moments. But...there are several flaws here.

First off, the story moves so freely that there is a feeling of "lack of cohesion" that makes it hard for any of the major plot points to sink in. The foundation starts to feel weak. It is a gritty and interesting story, and the setting and subject matter are pulp fiction candy tropes. Unfortunately there seemed to be more focus creating moments of extreme sensationalized tableauxs, than creating solid story continuity. Again, there is some really cool stuff happening in "She's Just A Shadow", unfortunately it all seems disjointed and more fitting to music videos and short film, arthouse pieces.

The acting is tight, the cast do a good job bring life to these characters, there just isn't enough written here for them to go on. Most of the characters are two-dimensional, weakly written "shadows". So much so that inorder to give them substance you really need to grab on to the film's title, and near hallucinatory asthetics and hold on for dear life. Something that helps equally with watching this one is the celebratory over-the-top display of violence and gore. There is plenty of blood flowing in "She's Just A Shadow". I just don't know if there's enough going on here to satisfy most film fans. (2.5/5)

WATCH THE SUNSET's Tristan Barr To Direct High-Concept Genre Film SUBJECT

SUBJECT, written by Los Angeles native Vincent Befi, will be the next film from award-winning Australian filmmaker Tristan Barr.

Barr’s most recent film Watch This Sunset, which he co-directed with Michael Gosden and shot in just one take, is one of the most celebrated Australian films of the decade.
Barr and David Gim will produce SUBJECT under their Continuance Pictures label.
The complex, frightening story of a prison inmate chosen to participate in a secretive government study, SUBJECT was originally submitted to Continuance Pictures for a short film initiative they were running called ‘Continue’. Producers Barr and Gim saw something even greater than a short within the high-concept screenplay and approached Befi about a feature version.
Australian actor Stephen Phillips (TV’s “The Leftovers”, “Winners & Losers”) will headline the film, with Gabriel Seow, Cecilia Low and Barr co-starring.
“Stephen is the perfect fit. He’s exceedingly talented and yet to really break out, which is what you want in actors for a found footage project like this,” says Barr.
SUBJECT will be shot in Melbourne, Australia later this year and is expected for a 2020 release date.
