My Review Of "Epidemic"

"Epidemic" is a outbreak horror directed by Stephen Michael Giglio. The film stars Amanda K. Morales, Andrew Hunsicker, and Joe Walz. It is a drama driven nightmare covering the onset of horrific viral outbreak.

A deadly pathogen is unleashed and unknowingly carried to Dana Overbeck's 30th birthday party, where her estranged father, Rufus, is coming to make amends.

"Epidemic" is a melodrama driven by human emotion as related to crisis. There is a social gathering of friends and family that feels as tragic as the horror before them. The film sets up a familiar scenario, well too actually. There is an equal tragedy of a father seeking an ill-fated attempt to make amends with his estranged daughter. Dramatic and sad characters struggling to overcome life only to face a nightmarish ordeal similar to "Cabin Fever".

The story has some flaws, but does create a cool picture of early onset pandemia on a stripped down, personal level. Some of the characters seem underdeveloped, with limited presence on screen. However a couple of the characters are relatable,  thanks to believable performances by the actors. Mostly though the film barely offers mediocre performances,  contrived melodrama and a strong disconnect from the script- when put to action.

The special effects are minimal,  practical choices that work well on camera, with a few minor flaws that are only noticeable when the lighting betrays them. For the most part the creature design and creative use of effects budget works to the films advantage. The only downside is the limited presence the horror has on screen- taking a backseat to the drama. Overall "Epidemic" will feel boring,  and be a bit of a disappointment to most horror fans. It will appeal to the niche low budget community with its indie feel and gag worthy notable practical effects. (2/5)
