Well Go USA Entertainment has announced the acquisition of US distribution rights to RIVER, directed by Jamie M. Dagg and starring Rossif Sutherland (HIGH LIFE), Ted Atherton (MAX PAYNE), Sara Botsford (THE FOG), and Vithaya Pansringarm(ONLY GOD FORGIVES).
In RIVER, American doctor John Lake (Sutherland), volunteering in the north of Laos, becomes a fugitive after he intervenes in the sexual assault of a young woman. When the assailant's body is pulled from the Mekong River, things quickly spiral out of control.
The Canadian-born Sutherland, half-brother to Kiefer Sutherland (“24”), is best known for his role in the award-winning HIGH LIFE (2009), as well as a supporting turn in Bruce McDonald’s HELLIONS, which released earlier this year after a successful World Premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. He also appeared alongside father Donald Sutherland in 2010’s THE CON ARTIST.
RIVER’s World Premiere marked Dagg’s third appearance at the acclaimed Toronto International Film Festival, where his previous two shorts, WAITING and SUNDAY, also made their debut. It was included in TIFF’s prestigious DiscoverySection, “where Festival audiences will find the future of filmmaking," said Cameron Bailey, TIFF's Artistic Director. "You can expect to uncover thrilling new voices, inspiring storytellers and hidden gems among this fantastic showcase of work from some of the most exciting new directors from around the world,” he said.
“It’s terrific when we can find a film so riveting, it holds on to you from beginning to end,” said Doris Pfardrescher, President and CEO of Well Go USA Entertainment. “That gripping tension is what’s so exciting about it - [Sutherland] is so raw, and so believable, that you really want to see him escape, and the tension just builds and builds - it's nearly claustrophobic. I was really impressed,” she said. The film is currently scheduled for a Summer 2016 theatrical release.
The deal was negotiated between Doris Pfardrescher at Well Go USA Entertainment and Nate Bolotin of XYZ Films on behalf of the filmmakers.
