My Review Of "Devil's Acid"

Grindhouse comedy horror "Devil's Acid" is directed by Garrett Kruithof and stars American Horror Story’s Drew Rin Varick, Ashley Dulaney (“Justified”), Jessica Lynn Parsons (“S.W.A.T”), Betty Jeune (The Florida Project), Nina Leon (“Longmire”) and Eric Gibson. The film is a unique genre-driven spiral down the rabbit hole where one bad trip crashes into one bad night.

Brothers Johnny and Luke hold this years "haunted hot girl challenge" in an abandoned prison facility deep in the forest on acid. It's a good trip until the devil shows up.

The story is creative and engaging, especially the set up of a late night storytelling session. The tropes are well founded horror elements that can at times seem overdone and disingenuous. In "Devil's Acid" there are those moments here as well, but for the most part the point of view and heavy humor keeps things balanced out. People hallucinating to the level of psychosis, I mean how could you not be curious.

The acting is iffy, not so much in ability or lack of direction. Mostly the characters seem a little too cliche and overdrawn. A couple of cast members seem to have control of their parts. Still it all is relative, and somewhat debatable, given the gonzo/ grindhouse style both visually and in writing. There is enough here to also enjoy. Some of the acting and some dialog is just to funny and enjoyable to really dismiss "Devil's Acid" completely.

The horror is mostly disappointing. Everything that happens is more gimmicky and restrictive. Budget issues probably explain that, but I really wanted more messier, celebratory violence and gore. Still, "Devil's Acid" has some cool atmospheric moments, recognize situational stuff that compliments the drug induced mayhem. Plus the devil (maybe).

Overall "Devil's Acid" is gonna have a limited fanbase. Mostly ultra low-budget b-movie fans who like dark humor with a touch of horror will get it. The movie does ride wildly close to "so bad it's good" status. It does have some choice moments. Still fans looking for more horror in their humor may be disappointed. (2.5/5)
