My Review Of “The Invoking”

the invokingJeremy Berg’s “The Invoking” tells the story of a young woman out to discover a past she never knew existed when a house is left to her by family she never knew was there. Samantha Harris (Trin Miller) and three of her friends take a trip to Sader Ridge to investigate the property, in the care of someone from Sam’s past. “The Invoking” stars Andi Norris, Brandon Anthony, Trin Miller, Carson Holden, D'Angelo Midili, and Josh Truax.

The story in “The Invoking” is a pretty cool, classic adventure turned nightmare and that works for the first half of the film. The characters are emotive and portray some pretty convincing roles. There is some lag when the story arch hits the midway point, and instead of rushing into a thrilling overload of horror and melodrama, things fall a bit flat. The vision goes from one of almost paranormal chills to one that seems patch-worked between missing intent and scattered dramatics. I felt that something got lost in the translation toward the last act of the story. The first part created a great character building connection between me and the characters, the second act created an atmosphere of haunting unease but the last act seemed lost or held back. Plus there is absolutely nothing paranormal, supernatural or invoking in the story save the lead character’s, Sam’s, recovered memories of a sketchy past. I felt the marketing for this film is very misleading and that is really off-putting.

The special effects and horror elements in this film are almost non-existent. I am not sure if that was intentional or a budget crunching thing but I really expected more from “The Invoking” and was left with a major feeling of disappointment. The few horror moments in the film are lightly braised upon with standard effects tricks that work but considering there were so few moments and most of the film is melodrama I feel Lifetime Movie Network is more this film’s audience. The ending was a total miss and made very little since. The meat of the mystery caretaker and Sam’s relationship is almost missing from the story. The moments touched upon are not enough to justify how this film ends. So really most of the film is a fail considering the pay-off, after such a suspense build-up, is really not worth the time invested. I say skip “The Invoking”.

Premiering at Monster Fest 2013, MurderDrome has been garnered praise from fans and critics alike:
“Director Daniel Armstrong rivals Quentin Tarantino in his zest for girl-on-girl violence” – The Age
MurderDrome was produced by Melbourne based production company Strongman Pictures Entertainment, and written, directed and edited by Daniel Armstrong. Daniel has worked on a number of Australian DIY features, including Richard Wolstencroft’s The Beautiful & Damned, Brett Anstey’s Damned By Dawn and his first, as yet unreleased, feature film, From Parts Unknown: Fight Like A Girl.
“To say MurderDrome was a labour of love is an understatement. It was produced over three years on the smell of an oily rag. It was shot in conditions that were less than favourable with a tiny part-time crew. It’s my hope that all of this has ultimately translated into a hyper-coloured, fast paced and fun little film that invites its audience along for the ride.” Daniel Armstrong – Director
Monster Pictures will be opening the gates to the MurderDrome on the 19th of March. Come in and get your copy on DVD. The DVD will include a Cast and Crew Picture-in-Picture Commentary, Gag ‘n’ Stack reel, VFX Breakdown, Music Video’s and Trailers.

My Review Of “Bordello Death Tales”

bordello“Bordello Death Tales” is a horror trilogy that brings together the talents of James Eaves, Pat Higgins and Alan Ronald. The stories offer up a trilogy of video nasties that are creative, stripped-down dark tales with witty endings. The trilogy forgoes the typical set up of horror host and uses a central point of terror to anchor the short films together. It works with this film when usually a lack of host to guide us through the nightmares is often greatly missed. “Bordello Death Tales” stars Eleanor James, Tina Barnes, Sam Dacombe, Harold Gasnier, Cy Henty, Julian Lamoral-Roberts, Natalie Milner and Danielle Laws.

“The Ripper” is a chilling and brutal story that brings a bit of sweet revenge to the sex worker gals who are so often preyed upon with brutality. It is sort of a ripper meets ripper kind of tale with a vicious killer of sex workers meeting a just reward in kind to his own brutality. A short film that is both organic, low budget and visceral. “The Ripper” offers a fun, entertaining blood soaked gorefest.

“Stitchgirl” is a campy, black & white piece that beckons Tim Burton to the truly dark side of cinema. Once more the story gives us a sinister madman feeding his delights from the selection of local prostitutes. Only this man’s revenge is a short lived tease of pleasure orchestrated by the madam herself. “Stitchgirl” is fun, creative, and truly artistic in it’s delivery. With a gothic avant-garde design this short film is well worth the price of this collection of death tales.

“Vice Day” is more video nasty that gothic art and brings us back full circle to the very video nasty nature of this trilogy. It is another visceral tale filled with blood, boobs and bad men. A political perv meets his end at the hands of a true fighter among the sex trade who is better at surviving than the politician. The story in “Vice Day” is a bit of a drag in the middle, more wordy and boisterous than the other two stories but it does bring the breasticles for the hetero gore fan. It also has just as much wit and just as dark of material as the other to stories in this collection. Even being weaker than the other two short films, “Vice Day” still holds it’s own with its dark nature and blood bath epitome.

“Bordello Death Tales” is a low budget trilogy but well managed, and directed brilliantly. It is a collection of clever video nasties that does not disappoint. I found the stories entertaining, the deaths graphic and gory, plus the witty endings offer a nice slice of justice. Actually “Bordello Death Tales” is kind of tasteful in the fact that it puts all the power in the hands of “whores” who are often tossed aside or relegated to the gutters of man’s dark nature. The film is well worth checking out for indie, and low-budget horror fans.
