The announcement was made by the film’s co-producer Thomas Zambeck and Stadium Media Founder/CEO Mitch Mallon. The acquisition deal was brokered by Susan Procko.

“We’re thrilled to be partnered with Stadium Media for the distribution of our film,” noted Zambeck. “As one of their first acquisitions, we hope this release signals a new era in how independent films can find their audience.

“Stadium Media was founded with the goal of giving independent filmmakers a level playing field for the digital distribution of their product,” remarked Mallon. “The Badger Game is a smart and inventive thriller that will keep audiences guessing until the last fade-out.”

Pagan Festival Shout Out: Veneralia/All Fool’s Day

VeneraliaThe Veneralia is the festival of Venus. In the public baths of Roma, women bathe in the men's baths wearing wreaths of myrtle. Especially honored is the aspect of Venus named Venus Verticordia, "The Changer of Hearts." It is, in general, a day for women to seek divine support and aid in their love lives.
It is also a day to honor Fortuna Virilis (who is somehow, but unclearly, connected with Venus); the jewelry is removed from her statue and ritually washed, and then she is offered sacrifices of flowers. Incense is also offered to the Goddess this day, in order for physical imperfections of women to be hidden from view in the baths. (Wikipedia)

On this day, Venus was celebrated as Venus Verticordia (changer of hearts). According to Ovid, this aspect of Venus rules over vows of chastity, morality, beauty and reputation. Honoring her encouraged adherence to social norms with regard to sexuality, for both men and women. (See pudicita.) During the festival, women carried the Venus's statue to the men's baths where it was ceremonially washed and dressed the statue of Venus at the temple near the Circus Maximus and then both the statue and its attendants were covered in myrtle. The statue of the Goddess Fortuna Virilis (Manly, verile) was washed and dressed and offered incense and flowers. the fool
All Fool's Day, also known as April Fool's Day, is a time for the traditional playing of pranks upon unsuspecting people...the victim of such a prank being called an April Fool.

In many cultures, tradition dictates that the pranking period must expire at noon on April 1 and any jokes attempted after that hour will bring back luck to the perpetrator. In addition, any who fail to respond with a good humor to tricks played upon them are said to attract bad luck unto themselves. Such victims are, however, entitled to "turn the tables" after the hour of noon with the retort: "April Fool's gone past...and you're the biggest fool at last!" It should be noted that not all April Fool superstitions are negative. Males who are fooled by a pretty female, for example, are said to be fated to marry the girl...or at least enjoy a healthy friendship with her.

The origins of this custom are somewhat uncertain, but may have initially been related to the arrival of Spring in late March, at which time Mother Nature is said to "fool" the human race with sudden and fickle changes in the weather...showers one minute and sunshine the next. The playing of practical jokes, however, dates back to Ancient Rome and such activities were an integral part of the Hilaria celebrations held on March 25, a celebration which would again appear to be associated with the coming of Spring and the Vernal Equinox, held to honor the resurrection of Attis, Roman God of Vegetation who was linked to the seasonal cycle.

My Review Of “Avenged”

f5favengedposterMichael S.Ojeda’s “Avenged” is a post-modern battle cry against the monstrosity of bigotry. The film blends elements of exploitation-revenge horror with classic, supernatural-action. “Avenged” stars  Ronnie Gene Blevins, Rodney Rowland, Willow Hale, and Peter Sherayko in a nightmarish tale that sees a young deaf woman crossing paths with some of the worst humanity has to offer. Witness to the brutal murder of two Apache men, Zoe is abducted, raped and left for dead. But the supernatural power to be avenged reaches beyond this reality exact primitive justice on the men who did this to her. “Avenged” can best be described as “I Spit On Your Grave meets The Crow”.

The story that Ojeda has created around this supernatural transformation of a sexual assault victim is powerful, compelling, and emotional. “Avenged” becomes a complex multilayered story with characters rich in dimension. From the beginning I felt the fear rise in me for what was to happen to Zoe-that just on the exploitation-revenge horror side of this story which dominates the first piece to this story. I also hated the notion that the GTO was gonna be brutalized, luckily that didn’t happen. However “Avenged” is filled with cruelty, brutality, grittiness and blatant sadism.

The acting and directing are quality. Michael S. Ojeda is a true talent with the gift of telling a really high-octane, and twisted story. The characters and situations are emotionally driven and effectively pull on you to feel and relate to both the horrors of man and the suffering of humanity. As “Avenged” gets into the crux of this supernatural-revenge legend-and legend is what Zoe is-some of that “human touch” gets lost in the intensity of the action and gore that permeate through the film. It isn’t really a bad thing, “Avenged” morphs into a major action driven, splatterfest of thrills.

The special effects are pretty awesome. Some moments seem to fall a bit flat when it comes to realism, but for the most part “Avenged” will excite any gore, and blood thirsty horror fan. There is some CGI mixed in but Ojeda seems to have an understanding of what is a healthy balance of its use. The CGI is blended effortlessly in most of the violence-rich scenes. A couple of times it looks kind of The Asylum-ish, but honestly there is so much visceral, raw carnage that uses practical effects that the CGI is more than embraceable by the “Purist” horror fans. Overall “Avenged” is a worthy supernatural-exploitation mashup that entertains on pretty much every horror level.

New Images And Character Posters For “Child 44”

A lot of new visual goodies have come out for historical period/ serial killer film “Child 44”. The film is directed by Daniel Espinosa and follows a disgraced member of the military police as he investigates a series of nasty child murders during the Stalin-era Soviet Union. “Child 44” stars Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, Gary Oldman, Joel Kinnaman, Charles Dance, Jason Clarke, Vincent Cassel, Paddy Considine.

Based on the first of a trilogy by Tom Rob Smith and set in the Stalin era of the Soviet Union. The plot is about an idealistic pro-Stalin security officer who decides to investigate a series of child murders in a country where supposedly this sort of crime doesn't exist. The state would not hear of the existence of a child murderer let alone a serial killer. He gets demoted and exiled but decides, with just the help of his wife, to continue pursuing the case.

My Review Of “Infernal”

infernalBryan Coyne’s “Infernal” is a well crafted blend of traditional and found footage horror. The film stars Andy Ostroff, Heather Adair, Alyssa Koerner, Jose Rosete, Noelle Bruno, Elizabeth Stahl, John Zion and Sara Winter. The story revolves around a middle class couple starting out with their first child. A child touched by evil, nurtured for something great and sinister. “Infernal” takes on classic devil child storylines, contemporary faith-based superstitions and a heavy dose of the “decline of the American family” attitude.

The plot is a well constructed, nicely written story that creates a pretty dark nightmare. The found footage has plausibility with the whole camera situation added in at the behest of a family therapist. So that aspect of “Infernal” seems solid enough. The film doesn’t stay found footage, moments of tradition third-person POVs are thrown in sparingly. Mostly when the film takes a more dramatic, emotional pause to allow for the full heft of the situation to settle in with the audience. It does a good job too! Overall the film is acted and directed nicely. The production is above basic, with a higher quality of HD camera footage mixed in thanks to the father’s new obsession with the “family exercise”.

The special effects are mixed bag, both in gimmick and in effect. The higher production quality follows through in these paranormal aspects of “Infernal” but do not give intended chills or thrills that the director is aiming for. Most scenes of the malevolence come off more like a Halloween horror commercial for Meijer's or some Haunted house attraction. It is done with things most of us possess in storage to be brought out on our favorite holiday. So that was disappointing. That being said, the last third of this nightmare is truly affective in both dramatic and emotional effect. A totally disturbing slice of paranormal horror.

Overall “Infernal” is not the best that paranormal horror or found footage possession flicks offer. Plus I felt there was a deeper spiritual agenda at work in the story, as if this was one of those Church-backed horrors meant to cause the audience to question their own spirituality in hopes to gain new members to Christianity or something along those lines. Anyway, everything seen in this film has been seen to death in this subgenre. But do keep in mind that I think the last act of “Infernal” is some of the most powerfully moving, deeply disturbing, in your face horror footage in indie horror. It is dark and intense, too bad this sucker didn’t catch that bug from the beginning. (note-For me the last act begins once you move past the “gold lame-ish looking disco demon’).

DVD Release Details For “On Tender Hooks”

MVD7138DKate Shenton's eye popping body modification documentary ON TENDER HOOKS has secured a North American release date through Philadelphia based distributor MVD. The film that shocked London's FrightFest audience but won the hearts of Canada's outrageous Soska Sisters has been given a street date of May 19th.

ON TENDER HOOKS challenges the perceptions and squeamishness of even the most hardened viewer as its director Kate Shenton, participates in the art of human body suspension. Whether you think it's disgusting or intriguing, the film is a fascinating look at a subculture many will find bizarre, even frightening.

ON TENDER HOOKS is also available on DVD in the UK through 101 Films and in Scandinavia through Njuta.

My Review Of “Hooked Up”

hooked upParanormal horror “Hooked Up” is directed by Pablo Larcuen and follows two mates on a Euro trip to Barcelona. The two go out and get lucky-So they think. They go back to a near by house to get busy with the girls they met only one of the women has a more sinister night planned. “Hooked Up” stars Jonah Ehrenreich, Júlia Molins, Stephen Ohl, and Natascha Wiese in a found footage framed nightmare. It is a high energy, emotional overload horror story that creates a traveler’s warning in a paranormal, and bloody roll-of-the-dice that is hooking up!

The story is a tightly woven blend of American horrors abroad and urban legend that mixes xenophobia with a baser celebration of the macabre surrounding ghost girl hook-ups that has evolved from the modern urban legend field. Although I wrestled with the film’s framing around the found footage style to tell this pretty cool story, I succumbed to the fact that it is that basic irritant I have with pretty much all found footage films-“would, given the circumstances of such a horrific series of events, would a person realistically continue to hold on to the camera to continue videoing the events?” Especially when the story unfolds chronologically without breaks.

Aside from the “found footage” issue I have, generally, I enjoyed many aspects of “Hooked Up”. I found the acting to be believable, the premise plausible, and the emotion genuine. There are a few moments when the dialog isn’t delivered quite as convincingly as I am sure the director and story hopes for, but for the most part the drama, suspense and energy is alive in “Hooked Up”. There isn’t much lull in the excitement or high drama here, every scene just amplifies the next as far as character drama. It is a cool, thrilling story and even in found footage it unfolds chillingly.

The special effects in “Hooked Up” are pretty tight as well, the blood and gore looked realistic enough. The death and violence are visceral and quality. The cinematography ran the expectant gambit of found footage gimmicks, First Person POV, shaky, shadowy scenes, quirky angles and confusing scenes that have obscured views with sudden thrills. Some times it works and sometimes it doesn’t. Luckily enough of the scenes work to create the intended nightmare sequences with enough energy to complete the story arc. Overall, “Hooked Up” just passes enough to be a cool Eurotrip horror, but not enough to be a must see. Plus the ending was really hokey and somewhat cliché. For found footage/paranormal fans this is an okay flick, for a wider horror fan base, “Hooked Up” doesn’t really offer much that hasn’t been seen and done before.

“The House At The End Of Time” Gets UK Release

HouseEndOfTime_artworkAlejandro Hidalgo's acclaimed supernatural thriller THE HOUSE AT THE END OF TIME will receive its UK DVD release on April 27th through Matchbox Films.

Ruddy Rodriguez (The Living Daylights) stars as Dulce, a mother who lives in an old house with her young children and husband. After terrifying encounters with mysterious apparitions, the ghost of an old woman leaves Dulce a series of messages warning that her husband will kill their children. She desperately tries to avoid this prophecy, but is helpless as the tragedy begins to unfold. Dulce is sentenced to a maximum penalty of imprisonment for a crime she did not commit. Thirty years later, an elderly Dulce returns home on compassionate release. There, with the help of a Priest, she will try to uncover the mystery and tragedy that has tormented her for so long.

The first horror film produced in Venezuela smashed box office records when it was theatrically released in its home territory and has since become the dark horse of the genre festival circuit where it's unique combination of jump out of your seat thrills, pathos and empathy has won over the hearts and minds of audiences worldwide, including Fantasporto in Portugal, Fantasia in Montreal, FrightFest in London and Screamfest LA where it won awards for Best Film and Best Director.

THE HOUSE AT THE END OF TIME was previously released in the USA by MPI on their Dark Sky Films label and a Hollywood studio remake is currently in development.

"A confident, clever spin on the haunted house tale which invites comparisons with Robert Wise’s The Haunting or Alejandro Amenabar’s The Others."
- Rob Daniel, Electric Shadows

"A superbly constructed film with real depth and layers just waiting to be peeled away, with an emotional core often missing from this genre"
- Naila Scargill, Exquisite Terror

- Ryan Turek, Shock Till You Drop.

"Scary as hell...but also has a family centered heart that reminds me of films like Poltergeist.
I strongly recommend this movie to anyone
who loves a great haunting tale"
- Adam Ruhl, Pop Culture Beast

"Intriguing suspense-horror....evokes both ‘The Sixth Sense’ and ‘The Others’"
- Movie Ramblings

"Like The Sixth Sense, The Others and Haunter, Alejandro Hidalgo's feature debut reverse-engineers the tropes and trappings of haunted house gothic"

My Review Of “Love In The Time Of Monsters”

LITTOMCostume monsters, cheesy one-liners, and over-the-top characters are usually a recipe for disaster-and not in the good, “we all love a good disaster”-way. However “Love In The Time Of Monsters” finds that magic sweet spot that brings all this madness together beautifully. Writer Michael Skvarla expresses a mildly genius ability to create a story that is fun, full of energy, and fast-paced with characters and situations that are truly entertaining. The fact that Matt Jackson took that vision and brought it to life in such a clever way, blending classic 80’s styled humor, and special effects while giving a true to now experience is phenomenal. “Love In The Time Of Monsters” is really beyond the basic indie monster movie, and proves there are still plenty of original stories alive in horror.

The story itself sets up a group of vacationers and residents at a wilderness tourist trap against some pretty unnatural circumstances. Toxic waste, viral mutants, and nature gone wild bring mayhem and carnage to the great outdoors. A bigfoot themed, All-American vacation spot with a Croatian-American owner, Bigfoot costumes, plenty of bad one-liners, zombie critters, and human mutants make “Love In The Time Of Monsters” a fun, witty horror/comedy that plays on both classic and modern concepts of relationships, love and horror. So much of this film and the direction taken to bring it to life should have and could have went wrong but somehow it all comes together to make one pretty awesome movie.

The acting is tight, with quick dialog delivered on time by a cast that brings their A game. “Love In The Time Of Monsters” stars Doug Jones, Kane Hodder, Michael McShane, Shawn Weatherly, Heather Rae Young, Gena Shaw, Marissa Skell, Paula Rhodes, Hugo Armstrong, Danny Vasquez, Paul Elia, Ben Palacios, Jade Carter, Zylan Brooks, Alex Sanborn and Bigfoot. The story is really does have a bit of everything mixed in with an almost slasher-esque atmosphere and setting, zombie/mutants, gore, comedy, even some boobs pop out in a “Zombeavers” like moment of bloody fun. There are a few moments where dialog falls flat, and characters step a bit over the line of authenticity but well over 95% of everything written and given in “Love In The Time Of Monsters” is just so on point and great that the flubs just don’t matter much.

The special effects are, as I said, a big ole bag of practical awesomeness with blood, guts, and gore. There is a tiny bit of CGI that does cheapen a one or two moments in the film but considering “Love In The Time Of Monsters” is a film with flesh-eating mutants running around in Bigfoot costumes, zombie wildlife, and characters who seem too cool for school  in that comedy way, the CGI is not a big downer. Plus most of the effects in this thing are old school, organic methods of monster movie making that, thanks to killer directing, writing, and clever acting, give one entertaining viewing experience.

The soundtrack and sound effects are pure energy. The hard rock, heavy metal soundtrack takes the atmosphere up a notch while feeling reminiscent of classic 80’s horror. The sound effects offer up atmospheric chills that are both dark and fun. Overall “Love In The Time Of Monsters” is a great indie monster movie. Even the “real” Bigfoot makes an appearance to save the day. He is a bit costume-y, but much like the animatronic critters and tongue-in-cheek dialog, it just works. This is a film that all of horror’s fans, both the hardcore “dark material” fans and the horror comedy fans. Definitely check out “Love In The Time Of Monsters”, it is a film that you don’t expect to be so damn good but it just is!

Zombies Take Denmark In “Outburst”

udbrud" In a World on the verge of collapse, a Young girl must use her survival instincts to survive the destructive epidemic that suddenly breaks out, and ravages her once safe childhood home.

Pustule Infected creatures of pure horror, wrought from the deepest depths of hell, stand in line to make life miserable for "The Girl With No Name".

But they have disturbed the wrong Girl."

Director Henrik Andersen, who co-directed the Danish zombie-horror feature Codename: Yin/Yang a few years ago, handled 100 volunteers to make Outburst, which is a tribute to the horror films of the 70s and 80s. -It’s also a tribute to film making in general, Andersen said to TV2 in Denmark. While Outburst is not a direct copy of famous genre movies, many of the pioneering directors has influenced Andersen; Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci are of course among the main influences, as are Enzo G. Castellari’s The New Barbarians. -We love the way film was made back then. The honesty and sincerity those movies radiate, in good ways and bad ways, is real film in our view. Something big productions today lack. Other favourite directors include Ruggero Deodato, Mario Bava, George Romero, Tobe Hooper, Jack Hill, Stuart Gordon, Jesus Franco, Sergio Martino, Umberto Lenzi, and Jean Rollin.

udbrud_outbreak_3
Andersen to Sørensen Exploitation Cinema: -The willpower that fueled their visions and creativity so it could be captured on film, is a huge inspiration. One scene in the film is a direct tribute to a scene in Mad Max 2: The road warrior, and in the same scene there is a hint to the Swedish exploitation classic Thriller (aka The Call Her One Eye), starring the legendary Christina Lindberg. And furthermore, the film’s composer Flemming Berg has made a soundtrack similar to those of John Carpenter, Claudio Simonetti, Ennio Morricone and Goblin. Synthesizer horror scores at their best!

UdbrudDVDHenrik Andersen, who not only directs Outburst but also co-wrote it with Kim Hermansen (the two also financed the movie with their own money), runs the company AMOS-FX (A matter of splatter) which provides special effects for around 20 movies, shorts and commercials each year. He prefers physical special effects: -We use [squibs] and make small explotions in front of rolling cameras. It always looks better when you make it real like that. But we can’t make everything, so we also use digital treatment, he says to the Danish newspaper JyllandsPosten, referring to gunfire.

Director Andersen describes his film as “fun, because it exaggerates so much” and “so grotesque that one will laugh at it”. Several scenes required 35 litres of blood each, so fans of the crimson stuff should expect Outburst to deliver!

First Trailer Released for “Save Yourself”

syThe first teaser trailer for Ryan M. Andrews and Jessica Cameron’s survival/ road trip horror, “Save Yourself” has been released. But when one of them goes missing at a rest stop, the women soon find themselves pitted against a deranged scientist hell-bent on using them for his mysterious research.

Based on the trailer, “Save Yourself” has some Tobe Hooper, Leigh Whannell influence fraying the edges of this so I am stoked! I have seen Cameron’s commitment to character in the past, and “Sick” was a strong, and emotion driven zombie flick….so…I can imagine the intensity of emotion and suspense that “Save Yourself” contains! Plus Stabbing Westward, one of the best bands the 90’s ever produced, in the background-fuck yeah!

To help him understand his troubling dreams, his friend Claudia, a 22 year-old hippie, uses her undeveloped psychic powers to give him a profound past-life regression, which floods his mind with memories of being a Nazi commando on a mission in and around the South Downs in 1940.

When his visions of that past existence begin to take shape in his current reality, Ralph starts to investigate. In the hope of piecing together his previous life, he goes on a camping trip to the locations he saw in his regression. He is accompanied by Claudia and their respective partners, Andrea and Lucas, who are much more interested in each other than reincarnation.
What none of them realize is that the past Ralph is trying to find is now stalking them, and it plans to exact a terrible revenge on all four campers for crimes committed nearly seventy years ago.
Backtrack is an intelligent and exciting psychological horror film that explores the dark side of reincarnation and karma. What sins did we commit in our past lives and will we pay for them in this one?

Final Trailer For “The Divine Tragedies”

TDTThe final trailer has been released for “The Divine Tragedies”. The film is directed by Jose Prendes and stars Graham Denman, Jon Kondelik, Hannah Levien, Sean Whalen, Lynn Lowry, Ruben Pla, Aaron Pruner, with special appearances by Ken Foree and Barbara Crampton. Read the full press release below.

Press Release:
Brothers Jon and James Kondelik are moving closer to the final reveal of their serial killer thriller The Divine Tragedies. This film has already completed production with several new and older horror veterans attached. Based on the famous Leopold and Loeb murder case, Dual Visions presents a new poster for the film.

The Divine Tragedies is a film which takes its story from truth. Leopold and Loeb were two intellectuals who thought they could get away with the perfect murder in 1924’s Chicago. In Jose Prendes’ vision the two killers are brothers. Set in the modern era, Charles Brubaker (Graham Denman) and Thomas Lo Bianco (Jon Kondelik) believe they are above the law and kill without mercy. Their murders become more and more gruesome until Detective Homer (Ken Foree) is able to intervene. But Homer is only a few steps away from his own tragedy.

the-divine-tragediesEarly reviews have been favorable for the film. Josh Soriano of the horror website Icons of Fright noted the film’s many influences: “…like the world of Palahniuk through the eyes of David Lynch… an uncompromising and original horror. The Divine Tragedies is surreal in scope as imagined by director Prendes.” As well, Matt Boiselle of Dread Central enjoyed the film’s darker tones: “…ferocious. This tragedy is simply divine, one of the better films I’ve personally dropped eyeballs on in some time.”

Synopsis:
The Divine Tragedies, based loosely on the famous Leopold and Loeb murder case, tells the tale of Charles Brubaker and his half-brother, Thomas Lo Bianco, who concoct a deadly game to test their superior intelligence against the dimwitted masses. This game will eventually lead to murder. And when Genevieve, a beautiful single mother, enters their lives, they finally find the perfect girl for their first kill. But problems arise when they quickly discover that Detective Homer Gaul (Ken Foree), a cop with a very special gift, is hot on their trail.

My Review Of "Axe To Grind"

Matt Zettell's scream queen slasher "Axe To Grind" is a fun mix of exploitation cinema and slasher mayhem. The film stars horror maven Debbie Rochon, Guy Torry, Matthew James Gulbranson, Paula LaBaredas and deals with a pissed off scream queen legend who finds she has been blackballed by her director de jure. The story is psycho killer simplicity that celebrates the bloodshed and body count with some witty dark, [industry]inside satire.

The story offers up some cheeky humor with dialog that is delivered with zest. Sometimes the acting falls flat and feels contrived, but for the most part "Axe To Grind" runs smoothly. Debbie Rochon is all about her character from the word go! I imagine playing this character was a bit cathartic. On the down side, the story is weak and cliché, with all the expected moments set up in touchstone formula. Some of the dramatic scenes step into the "over acted" stage, but the cast is committed to their characters and it shows on screen. This makes for an entertaining b-movie spectacle.

The special effects are on the cheaper side but acceptable, and they work their necessary magic to sell the screens. I did see some CGI blood spray, something I detest, but there was enough respect for the genre that organic blood splatter and practical effects are plenty in "Axe To Grind". The sound track and sound effects are the standard streams of instrumental affair. The music and effects work, they get you into the attitude and fun headspace of " Axe To Grind ".

Overall, " Axe To Grind" falls short of the desired energy that the story and acting demands. The film keeps an even upward momentum, it just doesn't completely carry the thrills and chills with it. It has a staged feel haunts the sequences. A set 'em up, knock 'em down" type deal. But their is a female slasher, the carnage is present, and Rochon is entertaining on screen. Check it out, just know that it barely gets above mediocre overall.

Pagan Festival Shout Out: Ostara

Today is a blessed and much welcomed time, the sun is ever closer, the first flowers have already started blooming, and the seasonal rains have begun. Of course I am talking about Spring, the vernal equinox, or as it is known to pagans in the northern hemisphere-Ostara.

altar

I have made my alter in honor of spring. I have my wood ready for the bonfire (although it will be a battle since the rain has been constant where I live). Ostara is a time to mark the coming of Spring and the fertility of the land. I direct my honoring's of the toward my garden and the health of the ground around me. I add a Ostara blessing incantation/prayer to my regular everyday prayer.

In ancient Rome, the followers of Cybele believed that their goddess had a consort who was born via a virgin birth. His name was Attis, and he died and was resurrected each year during the time of the vernal equinox on the Julian Calendar (between March 22 and March 25). Around the same time, the Germanic tribes honored a lunar goddess known as Ostara, who mated with a fertility god around this time of year, and then gave birth nine months later – at Yule.

fire
The indigenous Mayan people in Central American have celebrated a spring equinox festival for ten centuries. As the sun sets on the day of the equinox on the great ceremonial pyramid, El Castillo, Mexico, its "western face...is bathed in the late afternoon sunlight. The lengthening shadows appear to run from the top of the pyramid's northern staircase to the bottom, giving the illusion of a diamond-backed snake in descent." This has been called "The Return of the Sun Serpent" since ancient times.

According to the Venerable Bede, Eostre was the Saxon version of the Germanic goddess Ostara. Her feast day was held on the full moon following the vernal equinox -- almost the identical calculation as for the Christian Easter in the west. There is very little documented evidence to prove this, but one popular legend is that Eostre found a bird, wounded, on the ground late in winter. To save its life, she transformed it into a hare. But "the transformation was not a complete one. The bird took the appearance of a hare but retained the ability to lay eggs...the hare would decorate these eggs and leave them as gifts to Eostre."

Huffington Post has done a lovely article on Ostara that covers the meat of the holiday so hit the image below to head over and read that article.

My Review Of “Exile: The Sunderland Experiment”

ExileFirst off- let me say “What The Fuck?! This is the most wild and twisted exploration into the human condition that I have ever seen, and I loved every bleepin’ minute of it! “Exile” is probably the perfect blend of low budget indie filmmaking and science fiction surrealism. Directed by Adam Petke and Sean Blau, although the story’s pace and fluidity is so strong that you would think only one mind controlled the direction of this film. A lot of people will push it aside as ridiculous, but to be honest most people will see this film as I did, a true, original, captivating, emotional journey of human suffrage and escapism seen through the eyes of the youth.

“Exile” stars Fabianna Borghese, Jonathan Brophy, Dennice Cisneros, Ryan Finnerty. Dylan O'brien, and Katie Reed. The story is a moving, disturbing, coming of age in the wasteland that is so stripped down to a realness that is so recognizable and transferable into any genre. It just happens to be framed by a nightmarish, H.P. Lovecraftian form of first contact and the dichotomy of life inside a cult. “Exile” gives a relatable, recognizable premise and brings it into a hellish reality that is beautifully disturbing and effective.

The acting is pretty tight on all fronts, the cast are completely immersed in their characters, the script is evenly paced with chilling moments of horror and emotional segments of “life of the children that fall through the cracks”. The story moves with a somber beat of loss, despair that develops into determination and self preservation. Not to mention all the “real world” subtext symbolism that permeates this film. The direction Petke takes by keeping the style organic, and personal creates a deeply moving and unsettling reality for the characters

The special effects is the same concept as films like “District 9” but on a much smaller scale in regards to the CGI elements with the alien creature known as the “Angel”. The horror elements, and there are some awesome, dark, gory horror moments in “Exile”, stay practical and visceral. There is some CGI blood added during interactions with the Angel, but during the more dramatic scenes between the characters which end in horrific displays of Lovecraft inspired nightmares, the effects and blood are practical ones.

The soundtrack, sound effects used on “Exile” blend eerie instrumental sounds of sorrow and loss with added sound effects that are chilling. Together the sounds create a tense atmosphere of suspense that just elevates the emotional and dramatic struggle of the characters into areas of that are more horror than sci-fi. Honestly I would say that “Exile” is a horror drama more than it is a horror scifi blended story. Overall the film is a powerful, indie horror that gets everything organically right. It is honest, compelling, emotional, and entertaining. A truly chilling exploration of the human experience in horrific conditions. A must see film!

My Review Of “The Dooms Chapel Horror”

TDCH“The Dooms Chapel Horror” is a blend of classic creature-feature and contemporary cult horror wrapped in found footage. The film is directed by John Holt and stars Bill Oberst, Jr., Austin Madding, Abby Murphy, Shaun Gerardo, Josh Robinson, Josh Cornelius, Steve Crowley, Allan Walters, Wendy Keeling. The plot follows a young man revisiting his home town past wrought with tragedy, that soon discovers a new horror unfolding in the community, one in which he is to blame. It takes on an organic, home movie feel at the beginning but soon spirals into a chaotic mangling of docu-horror and classic monster movie madness.

The story is a somewhat complex tale that revolves around the second son of a prominent farming family in rural America. A dichotomy of character shows the conflict of a guy who never lives up to his family’s hopes, strangled by the shadow of his older brother’s death, and forced to face his haunted past under the spotlight of a documentary film crew’s light. The story that warrants this framework for the story is one I had a bit of trouble swallowing. I never got what made him important enough for a documentary. Sure tragic events, small town equals big talk but beyond that I never understood what made him so important that a documentary crew decided to revisit the story. However it does set up the found footage angle that moves us into a truly amplified creature feature.

The acting is hit or miss with a lot of the cast in “The Dooms Chapel Horror”, more so with over-acting than not living up the task. Most of the characters feel authentic enough, but I felt several of the characters could have toned it down somewhat and still been just as impactful. Still Holt directs a nearly perfect found footage concept with events unfolding fast, chaotically, and full of emotion. Once the cult aspect and the lead character’s actions that created the horror unfolding takes off, “The Dooms Chapel Horror” morphs into a thrilling nightmare. At times I got lost in the events unfolding before me, and yet at other times the momentum falters a bit before picking back up.

The special effects and soundtrack featured in “The Dooms Chapel Horror” is a show of true indie quality. Mostly suggestive moments that hint at the horror aspect shown through shaky cam, poor light, and creative angles create the nightmare easily. The creature effects are practical FX works presented in limited amounts on screen that are believable. A lot of films linger too long on cheap props and kill the intended effect and overall momentum of the scene, but that isn’t the case with “The Dooms Chapel Horror”. Between the special effects and camera tricks there is a real horror presence on screen. The soundtrack, effects do an expected job of creating the mood and atmosphere but are limited, allowing for most of the actual sounds caught on video to do most of the work at creating the moments.

Overall, “The Dooms Chapel Horror” manages to give us a nice, homegrown indie feel with some very electric moments. There is some drag at the beginning of the film, as we build up to the main event but once the film gets going it keeps at a pretty intense pace. The acting is as I said before, hit or miss, and it is inconsistent so it never fully kills the flick, only short moments fall flat. The effects aren't spectacular but they are creative, quality moments that work. The last 3rd of “The Dooms Chapel Horror” is pretty tight, gives some cool thrills and has a wicked ending that I enjoyed. Definitely check out “The Dooms Chapel Horror” because there is enough going right in this film to enjoy.
