Get To Know Amanda Jelks: My Chat With The Star Of “Crazy Fat Ethel” 2012

Amanda Jelks is about to make horror fans criminally insane as she prepares to step into the role of Ethel in Brian Dorton’s “Crazy Fat Ethel”. It will truly be an instant cult classic. Bank it. Some of you out there in fa-la land may be wondering who Miss Amanda Jelks is so I am about to tell you who the “F” she is! Chances are when I finish this next few sentences you will know who I am talking about. She played Frederika in “Cabin Fever 2: Spring Break”. A killer sequel that I found very little flaw with. It is a great Ti West picture and one of the few movies that made me squirm the entire time. An awesome film to say the list and Amanda Jelks character left an impression. I mean how many out there can say they made out with hot guy while loosing their virginity in a pool on Prom Night! So what if there was that nasty little detail of dying from a flesh eating, body rotting virus. So yeah Amanda Jelks is an actress on the brink of stardom. I had the lovely opportunity to speak with the young actress as she waits for production to begin on “Crazy Fat Ethel”, me in my Kentucky home and her in her Atlanta, GA home. Isn’t the internet just neat-O!

Amanda Jelks was born and raised in New Orleans where she caught her first acting bug at the tender age of 9. That grew into a passion which eventually gained her a full scholarship into New Orleans Center of the Creative Arts. She then moved to Atlanta, Ga in 2008 where she now lives with her husband and their son. She told me that even though she loves Atlanta with all it’s culture and entertainment she makes sure to get back to her roots at least twice a year to see her family. A family whom are very proud to see one of their owns star rising. For not only is she getting ready to do a remake of a cult classic with one of today's top Indie directors she also has a role in the movie “Untouched” which has wrapped and waiting for a release date. In that film she plays a street tough, misunderstood teen mother accused of killing her baby. Here is what all we had to talk about in our wonderful southern chat.

ASouthernLife: How are you this evening?
Amanda Jelks: Doing well! How are you?

ASouthernLife: Good.I have been so excited about talking to you I re-watched Cabin Fever 2 , read your bio and tried to find info on Untouched! lol
Amanda Jelks: That's so sweet! Untouched hasn't been released yet, but the producers made an announcement a few days ago that some news is coming out about it soon. It's going to be a great film!

ASouthernLife: So how are you enjoying Atlanta. That is my original stomping ground.
Amanda Jelks: I love Atlanta, I have been here since 2008. I'm from Louisiana, so the only difference is there's a lot more to do and a lot more traffic. lol.

ASouthernLife: Traffic is horrible but there is something about that place just makes everything feel electric. Favorite places to hang out in the city?
Amanda Jelks: That's how I feel about New Orleans, when it's the place you were born and raised it stays in your blood and it never leaves. New Orleans will always have a special place in my heart and be "home". In Atlanta, I love going to dueling pianos at Red Sky Tapas in Marietta, the Aquarium, Piedmont Park, Centennial Park, Marietta Square(I love their Farmer's Market on Saturdays and Brown Bag Concerts), The Atlanta Zoo, and Botanical Gardens.

ASouthernLife: So you still miss New Orleans? Do you ever get back to visit family these days, did the storms miss their area this past month?
Amanda Jelks: I try to visit once or twice a year, most of my family is there. The storm caused minor damage for my family, they are very fortunate.

ASouthernLife: That is good to hear. Now you got your start acting in theater in N.O. before college, plans to go back to theater in the future?
Amanda Jelks: I love theater acting, if an opportunity came along for a comedy or drama that I was passionate about I would jump at the opportunity to perform on stage. However, film acting is my priority for career choice. Theater is more for fun and a hobby.

ASouthernLife: So how does a Louisiana girl find her way on the set of Cabin Fever 2 in North Carolina?
Amanda Jelks: My agent is based in South Carolina and she emailed me about the part in Cabin Fever 2. I submitted a video audition and acted the entire pool scene(solo lol) for my audition in my living room. A few weeks later, I got a call back and had to drive to Wilmington to meet Ti and the producers. They confirmed that I was comfortable with the part and nudity and started special effects prep on me the next day!

ASouthernLife: So did you get naked in your living room?
Amanda Jelks: I didn't, but I pretended to get undressed, lose my virginity, and drown! I told them I was comfortable with the nudity as long as it was tasteful and I didn't have to show all my goodies. lol.

ASouthernLife: lol. well it is the first icon scene in the film that sets the film off! well the guy hit by bus but your death scene although sad, sets a tone for the film. How did it really feel when the camera was on you and standing in front of Ti West? Any nerves?
Amanda Jelks: I felt so comfortable on set, everyone was wonderful! My wardrobe team was waiting for me with towels and robes, the set was closed so there was only a few people there. Ti is a really nice guy with a quirky sense of humor, I think it is impossible to feel uncomfortable around him!
228462_356047547807757_644847515_n

ASouthernLife: Had you seen his work before Cabin Fever 2? Is Horror a genre you like, as a fan?
Amanda Jelks: LOL that's actually what is funny, I LOVE scary movies but I am the girl with her hands over her face peeking through my fingers! My mom and I watched The Roost after I auditioned.

ASouthernLife: That was a fun movie! So what ever happened with the Frederika prop?
or was that you floating in the pool in makeup?
Amanda Jelks: The special effects team was so proud of it, they said they were going to keep it in their studio to show off. I had to have a body mold and cast put on over my entire head, shoulders, chest, and upper back for them to make it. The only thing that wasn't covered were my nostrils. I had a bad cold and had to keep using Afrin to breathe, it ended up taking 4 times to get the mold right!

ASouthernLife: lol.You did let them know to get in touch with you if they ever decided to part with it right? it was a good effects job. So how was it making out with Thomas Blake?
Amanda Jelks: I did, it was awesome! I have pictures of it I put on my fan page. Thomas is a sweet guy and really cute, all the ladies were drooling over him! We became good friends during filming. It felt like making out with my brother. lol.

ASouthernLife: I will have to swipe one for the article...lol. Can you talk about Untouched?
Amanda Jelks: You can use any pictures from my fan page that you need. I would love to talk about Untouched.

ASouthernLife: Awesome. So tell me about your character Jacquelyn Turner.
Amanda Jelks: Jacquelyn is a high school student in jail, whose accused of murdering her baby

ASouthernLife: Harsh role to play as a mother I am sure, was it hard to relate to the character?
Amanda Jelks: It wasn't because she was prejudged by the way she looked and being overweight all of my life I can easily identify with Jacquelyn. Being a mom definitely added a lot of emotions into the role, a younger mom at that. I could never imagine my child dying or murdering him for that matter.

ASouthernLife: So where you bullied as a kid or do you still deal with it? did this role help ease it some? I was, as a gay kid in 80's school system in the South.
Amanda Jelks: There was some bullying, but my mom has always taught me to roll with the punches and not let it get to me. There are always people that you meet though that will judge you because you are different.

ASouthernLife: Exactly.Take that negativity and let it motivate you and empower you!
Amanda Jelks: I'm sorry you were bullied, my sister is gay and a lot of my friends from school are gay. People are so misguided, but I am glad that more people are starting to support the gay community
I love the way you put that

ASouthernLife: Wish more kids today would see it that way...too many suicides
Amanda Jelks: It is awful, my mom just finished a research assignment on suicides in the GLTB community and found that it is twice as high as in the heterosexual teen community. You are who you are and everyone should accept each other for the beauty of their own being

ASouthernLife: It is i just don't see anything changing that will make these kids safe enough we have to change the way they feel about them selves so they can deal with the negative stuff in life better. for some reason they are not learning that from either home or peer members. How does Jacquelyn's character relate to the other cast members in Untouched.
Amanda Jelks: I can't go into too much detail, but Jacquelyn affects most of the main characters in the movie.

ASouthernLife: Sounds like she is a trouble maker.
Amanda Jelks: She is not a trouble maker, just very misunderstood

ASouthernLife: Okay before I let you go I have to talk about "Crazy Fat Ethel"! How did you meet Brian Dorton?
Amanda Jelks: I saw the Crazy Fat Ethel 2012 Facebook Page and asked if they were auditioning and Brian contacted me about Ethel

ASouthernLife: When he posted your pic as his most likely choice, I felt you was perfect! Have you seen the original "Criminally Insane"
Amanda Jelks: Thank you! I have seen the original, I love the comedic moments in it. "I want that key!"

ASouthernLife: So have you seen any of the script yet or is it still in early stages?
Amanda Jelks: I haven't seen it yet! Brian has given me a few teaser bits, but doesn't want me to see the finished product yet. Based on what he has told me, it is going to be Brian's vision of Crazy Fat Ethel, but will definitely do justice to the original.

ASouthernLife: So how long have you been married and will that cute child of yours go to the shoot with you?
Amanda Jelks: I have been with Tony for 5 years, but we have only been married for a little over a year. My cute kid would probably make the set a true horror scene, so he will not be on set! He usually travels with me and hangs out with family at the hotel and around town. Thank you for saying he is cute!

I took him to my headshot session last week and he was hamming it up for the camera and wanted his "cheese" lol... he could be a future actor

ASouthernLife: They start early ... sign him with an agent now!
One last question What is your favorite Prom movie of all time, favorite slasher film, and favorite actress you most admire?
crazy fat ethelAmanda Jelks: Carrie is my favorite prom movie, Slasher is Child's Play, Actresses I love are Meryl Streep because she is so versatile and completely molds herself into her characters, and I admire Kathy Bates and Melissa McCarthy because they have opened the door for plus sized actresses to play the parts that are usually give to "normal sized women".

So after nearly two hours of me hoarding Amanda Jelks time which she was so cordial and lovely about, so pleasant to chat with, our interview ended. Now you all know who the “F” she is. Amanda Jelks is a fabulous actress and wonderful person. She can get freaky with the crazy on the screen and still step away with a southern charm that would make Blanche Devereux proud. “Cabin Fever 2: Spring Break” is a great Prom horror flick and smooth sequel to the original. It is one of my favorite sequels mostly because it picks up almost immediately where the first film leaves off allowing a true continuation of the story but is still fresh and entertaining. Hopefully word will come out shortly as to “Untouched” release date and get your asses ready for hell of an entertaining and crazy instant classic “Crazy Fat Ethel”. And thank you Amanda Jelks for proving not all virgins survive horror flicks and for giving me a fun interview!

My Review Of “Creep Van” 2012

creep van“Creep Van” is a dark and twisted story that pits a guy trying to get his life back on track against a psychotic killer stalking him in a super modified creepy van. The film is directed by Scott. W. McKinlay and stars Brian Kolodziej, Amy Wehrell and Collin Bernsen. The story has Kolodziej playing a guy who moves in with his best friend after a harsh break up. He needs wheels and luckily for him there is an awesomely vintage “bad man” set roaming the neighborhood looking  for buyers. Unfortunately it is just a mere lure to get potential victime, I mean buyers close enough to seal the real deal. This is the guy all our parents warned us about growing up!
For me the film comes off a little more tongue-in-cheek corny than I would have liked to see with a film that is this bold and original. The acting is just a big cheesy which gives a strong comedic vibe but not so much that it sucks. You just get a too obvious since that everyone around this project knows how B-movie this thing is which takes away from the darkness too much. It really is a horror comedy minus tack sound effects. For me that is the only thing that doesn’t quite fit with this film. “Creep Van” has some awesome and gory kill scenes and when it comes to psychos “The Creep” in this movie is as brutal and unrelenting as any. It is the saving grace of the whole film.
This movie is an obvious homage to early 80’s films that blend “Madman” like atmosphere and horror with the truly twisted humor of “Maniac Cop”. I wouldn’t say that this movie is “scary as hell” but it is an enjoyable film that brings the blood. There is enough going right for “Creep Van” to warrant seeing. This is something that is against a lot of reviews I have seen online about the film that consider the movie crap. Yeah there are some crappy things happening here but taken on it’s entirety this film manages to entertain and ride that cult classic gory feel from start to end.

Early Concept Images From Bill Oberst Jr.’s “Lord Bateman” movie

Check out the truly demonic vision that is “Lord Bateman”. The images are early concept stills for horror flick that sees Bill Oberst Jr. in the demonic lead as Lord Bateman. The film is currently in the early script stage and is in active pre-development in association with Dismal Productions. On a side note if the demonic is lookin this hot in real life then a super hard rock Hellalujah!

Gory, Sexy, Cool : The Twisted Vision Of Mikel Ledesma

My interview with the Director of "Tinsel" and "Man On The Roof"

424377_2718628480674_1600047796_n

Mikel Ledesma is a fairly young guy on the Indie film scene. Born in 1991 in Texas he as focused and determined to make it in the industry as any seasoned director. A fortitude of character that has already paid off for him as his first ever short film "Tinsel" has garnered praise from the Independent film community, most recently being nominated for best short film at the San Antonio Horrific Film Festival. The film did when best F/X for a short film, an achievement that he proudly sees as validation for the hard work that went into the movie's production and opposition he delt with on his choice of career.

"Tinsel" told the story of a young girl who feared Christmas for one reason only. The Tinsel Killer, a soul so evil and twisted by childhood tragedy that he sought to kill anyone who dared decorate their tree with the festive foil. The movie was impressive to say the least. A strong body count, plenty of blood splatter and a clever twist to the plot that really leaves the story open for future exploration. Something that Mikel is not too keen on at the moment but admits that the idea has found it's way around the office at Twisted L Films. The acceptance that Mikel Ledesma recieved from the horror community gave him a stronger drive to focus on a bigger project. His first feature length film tentatively titled "Man On The Roof". A very modern story with originality and daring written all over it. More about this film later further down in the article.

149489_2942738483284_258571396_nAt the ripe old age of 21 Mikel Ledesma has already been awarded for his accomplishment but his biggest award comes from the acknowledgement from those dearest to him, his family. Those voices of opposition I mentioned earlier? Several came from Mikel's inner sanctum and to finally be able to show that he was serious and had a gift for story telling is a much bigger reward for any young talent starting out. A talent that was first sparked at the tender age of 10 when he saw "The Problem Child". The title character was one he felt he related to and that connection told Mikel Ledesma that there was something special about film, something he wanted to be apart of and share with others. Later after watching "Jeepers Creepers" he set out to determined to succeed in the art of making movies. Something that he is well on his way to doing. If "Man On The Roof" looks as awesome as it sounds, and based on "Tinsel" it will be then Mikel Ledesma has a long career ahead of him. I recently had a great chat with the young director about his work, most importantly about this most creative new project "Man On The Roof" and his next film in line "Crazy & Beautiful".

ASouthernLife:  "Man On The Roof"..who's idea was it to do this concept?

Mikel Ledesma: The concept of "Man On The Roof" actually came from me.
My cousin used to swear to us that she would see a Man On The Roof on the neighbors roof, and I took her horrible vision and ran with it.

ASouthernLife: wow...did anyone else see the man on the neighbors roof?

Mikel Ledesma: No, Just her. And now that I am making the movie. She is totally against it.

ASouthernLife: Aw..maybe once she sees the movie she will be okay, so can you give any details about the movie? Is everything still on schedule and will there be a lot of blood?

Mikel Ledesma: Well I took the movie and the story to another level, and made some major changes so it wouldn't be so much like what she went through. I wanted to make something different and visual. I wanted dark, scary, gory, sexy, etc. I wanted to give the horror hounds what they want. The movie will be another shocker like Tinsel was, Expect the unexpected. Can I give you any details? I can, There will be a very high body count. I think we have 23 deaths. And they all die really cool. I will give away 2 death scenes, We have a scalping scene, and a bong kill scene. This movie is more on the torture porn side, instead of people just getting stabbed. They actually get tormented and tortured. There will be TONS TONS TONS of blood. We stepped it up a lot, this film will have nothing on "Tinsel". Everyone is in for a treat!! And as of right now, we are still on schedule. And the film is expected to drop 3.13.13

ASouthernLife: So it has a grittier more grindhouse feel than a slasher feel. oh and thanks for the death scene details...so far the film sounds pretty killer.

Mikel Ledesma: Yes it will be way more grittier, and more thrilling. We are building up the suspense a lot. Yes, I don't think we can consider this one a slasher. But Horror fans will be pleased. I Promise. We are getting a great response from everyone who has read the script. Everyone is saying we stepped it up a lot.

ASouthernLife: "Man On The Roof" sounds like it will make horror fans happy, may even create new fans.

Mikel Ledesma: I think we will set the bar REALLY high with "MOTR". It is just such a different story. And I feel like it just hasn't been done. And everyone deserves something different, and not the same old recycled stuff.

ASouthernLife: After this film you have "Crazy& Beautiful" want to talk a little about that one?

Mikel Ledesma: Yes, "Crazy&Beautiful" is my next film. I can't wait to give everyone a sneak peek of it. YOU ARE FIRST TO HEAR ABOUT IT!! No one's been told anything about it, except the people who are a part of the film. We just sent the script out also. And everyone is seeming to LOVE it!

526990_276919899088539_647140156_nNot only did Ledesma give me some juicy details on "Man On The Roof" as far as gore and kill scenes and what to expect but he did also let me know about some new details concerning the "Crazy & Beautiful" project which I will share later. It will be a film totally different from the two projects Mikel Ledesma and Twisted L Films are doing at the moment and should show this new kid on the scene can be proficient and clever. Although his love lies with horror he is eager to explore concepts that reach into other areas which will be evident once "Crazy & Beautiful" begins production in the future. A film that is a revision of the classic Romeo & Juliet story.
Mikel Ledesma has a busy schedule with "Tinsel" still going out to festivals, production gearing up for "Man On The Roof" and "Crazy & Beautiful" already on paper but Ledesma already has an idea for a web series that will bring him back to his passion. He told me that he is toying with the idea of a horror web series sometimes in the future when he finishes these projects. Plus you never know if the Tinsel Killer will ever live to slay another season! Maybe not but anytime soon but an idea is a seed just waiting to grow into something fantastic. My words not his. "Tinsel" is done, officially and will live wonderfully as a short film that is one hell of a slay ride into life psychotic.
556499_3200283921759_1012570896_n
For now with the recent and affirming acknowledgement from family and horror community alike Mike Ledesma has his sights on the next phase of his life. Making new completely original movies that are modern and twisted beautifully. I think the bigger of which is finally feeling he has gained respect and approval from his father who is someone he looks up to and means the world to him. His words not mine. Although even if they were mine they would still be true. The moment he saw his Dad's face light up when he Skyped him, showing him the award, it validated all the days of struggle leading up until that moment where worth it and this young man who considered himself to be a "problem child" was now an accomplished director and the son of a proud father.

Check Out The New Poster For “Ritual”

“Ritual” is directed by Mickey Keating and stars Leigh Whannell and Derek Phillips in a dark story about a man who arrives at a seedy highway motel and learns that his estranged wife has killed a stranger who is connected to a dangerous cult, after receiving a distressed phone call.

The radio blares a 24-hour Halloween Weekend Fright Fest as Tom Moses drives deeper and deeper into the desert. He arrives at a sleazy motel, where his wife, Lovely, informs him through the locked door that something terrible has happened. He persuades her to let him inside and discovers a man slumped against the wall on the other side of the room, stabbed to death.

Though Lovely tries to convince Tom that she only came here for a drink, he knows the real story – this isn’t the first time she’s run off with strange men in the middle of the night. Lovely begs Tom not to call the police and, against his better judgment, he finally agrees to help. Maybe he’s a fool in love, maybe he’s just a plain fool, but his decision to stay is certainly the worst he’ll ever make in his entire life. It is not long before Tom discovers a video camera in the trunk of the man’s car and plugs it into the television. He and Lovely watch as a horrifying image crackles to life: a group of individuals, shrouded in robes and disguised in skull masks, ritualistically sacrifice a helpless girl.

The situation becomes clear and Tom and Lovely realize that they need to get out while they still can. But the night has only just begun and the strangers in skull masks soon arrive with a plan of their own...

The guys over at STYD posted this creepy and awesome still of Leatherface soon to be terrorizing a new generation of horror fans in “Chainsaw Massacre 3D” . Continuing the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, the film picks up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off.

The townspeople long suspected the Sawyer family, owners of a local barbeque pit, were somehow responsible.  Their suspicions were finally confirmed one hot summer day when a young woman escaped the Sawyer house following the brutal murders of her four friends.  Word around the small town quickly spread, and a vigilante mob of enraged locals surrounded the Sawyer stronghold, burning it to the ground and killing every last member of the family – or so they thought.

Decades later and hundreds of miles away from the original massacre, a young woman named Heather learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she never knew she had.  After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. But her newfound wealth comes at a price as she stumbles upon a horror that awaits her in the mansion’s dank cellars.

Secrets we keep from each other can come back to haunt us: NO TELL MOTEL is a compelling story of isolation , desperation, and the darkest kind of redemption. The old Horak place , an abandoned roadside motel tucked away in the woods just off Route H is the stuff of local legend. The place where little Angela Horak got run down in the middle of the road. Of course that was nothing compared to what happened to her parents afterwards. It’s not exactly the ideal place to get stranded. But that’s exactly what happens to adorable Megan Walsh and her four teenage friends when their RV gives up the ghost. With no other options, the group reluctantly decides to hole up for the night in the crumbling motel’s mysteriously organized Room Six. It isn’t long though, before Megan and her friends discover they’re not alone…

As they’ve been doing for years, Louis and his son arrive at a hunting lodge for their yearly vacation with family and friends.  They hunt, drink, and share stories by the fire, enjoying the relaxing, familiar countryside.  But when the caretaker’s mother falls ill, it is quickly apparent that she is not sick from an ordinary virus.  When she disappears into the woods, the fear begins to spread.

Reports of an outbreak of a mutated form of lyme disease begin popping up all over New England and soon, all over the country.  The disease is causing people to become inexplicably violent, committing horrific acts of murder and cannibalism.  Normally sane men and women, young and old, become infected with an insatiable desire to eat human flesh.  Broadcasts declare that, “Humanity is sick.”  These unfortunate souls are not the undead walking the Earth; they are alive and understand the atrocious acts they cannot help themselves from.

As the infection spreads and the diseased monsters find their way to the hunting lodge, what starts out as an innocent camping trip, turns into the ultimate fight for survival…of the human race.
