"POE'S LIGHTHOUSE KEEPER LIVES" Horror Master's Final Tale Resurrected

For the first time, Edgar Allan Poe's final, unfinished short story known as "The Light-House" is being adapted as a feature film.

In the movie, a young man awakens alone on a remote beach, marooned there by a violent storm. Above the the rocky crags, a lighthouse stands like a sentinel. The man seeks the help of Walsh, the enigmatic lighthouse keeper. Walsh insists they are the sole inhabitants of the peninsula. But the man is haunted by fleeting glimpses of a beautiful young woman, and plagued by visions of hideous phantoms reaching out from the depths. As this horror tale races towards a mind bending finale, the man must confront the grotesque denizens of the night, or heed the lighthouse keeper's cryptic warning to "Always keep a light burning!"

"I was promoting my monster movie, PRIMITIVE, in San Luis Obispo when a representative from the non-profit group, The Lighthouse Keepers, suggested I shoot a movie at the Point San Luis Lighthouse, built in 1890, the last Victorian style lighthouse on the West coast," Director Benjamin Cooper said. "It was too good an opportunity to pass up, and being a fan of Roger Corman's Edgar Allan Poe cycle since I was a kid, I instantly thought of Poe's story."

Cooper teamed with Executive Producer Jeff Miller (AXE GIANT, THE BURNING DEAD), and screenwriter Carl Edge to bring the story to the screen.

"We made a real effort to inject the kind of energy and scares modern audiences would respond to." Cooper said Andrea Wiersma (PUPPET MASTER X) delivers special make-up effects with unmistakeable style. "However, I also wanted to honor Corman's pictures and the original Poe. Above all, this is atmospheric, gothic horror."

The original Poe tale was brief and unfinished at the time of the writer's death, so Cooper approached the material just as Corman had done, by using the short as a springboard into a newly invented story in the spirit of Poe.

Fan favorite Vernon g Wells (MAD MAX 2: ROAD WARRIOR) plays the titular Lighthouse Keeper. "I worked with writer Carl Edge to make this a real showcase for Vernon. The character required somebody mysterious, and with commanding presence, but also with a lot of stuff going on beneath the surface. Vernon relished the challenge."

EDGAR ALLAN POE'S LIGHTHOUSE KEEPER is now shopping for distribution. Also starring: Matt O'Neill (PRIMITIVE), Rachel Riley (8213: GACY HOUSE), Monty Wall (THE BRINK), S. Daxton Balzer (PRIMITIVE), Carl Edge, John Spencer File and Erik Chavez. Gary Jones (EVIL DEAD 2) contributed digital effects.

Thunderhead Entertainment LLC specializes in handsomely mounted "high concept" genre films with an emphasis on strong story, characterization, and production value. Titles are available at most major video outlets such as Walmart, Fry's, Amazon, NetFlix, iTunes, Vudu and Youtube.

General Quotes:

'Paul Kane is a first-rate storyteller, never failing to marry his insights into the world and its anguish with the pleasures of phrases eloquently turned.'
-Clive Barker, bestselling author of THE HELLBOUND HEART, ABARAT, MISTER B. GONE and THE SCARLET GOSPELS

'I'm impressed by the range of Paul Kane's imagination. It seems there is no risk, no high-stakes gamble, he fears to take…Kane's foot never gets even close to the brake pedal.'
-Peter Straub, bestselling author of GHOST STORY, MR X, LOST BOY LOST GIRL, IN THE NIGHT ROOM and A DARK MATTER

'Kane finds the everyday horrors buried within us, rips them out and serves them up in these deliciously dark tales.'
-Kelley Armstrong, bestselling author of BITTEN, HAUNTED, BROKEN, THIRTEEN and OMENS

'Paul Kane's lean, stripped-back prose is a tool that's very much fit for purpose. He knows how to make you want to avoid the shadows and the cracks in the pavement.'
-Mike Carey, bestselling author of THE DEVIL YOU KNOW, VICIOUS CIRCLE, DEAD MEN'S BOOTS, THICKER THAN WATER, THE NAMING OF THE BEASTS and THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS

Praise for RED:

'In RED Kane reveals himself to be a sensitive writer, someone who has a solid grasp of relationships and who isn't afraid to use that knowledge. His characters feel like real people, and that's essential if you're going to pit them against such a foe. He makes you care about them. Then he sends them out into the darkest parts of this urban jungle… So get ready to take this journey through a very modern fairytale. It has teeth, but not just at the end. These days, the path itself is full of dangers.'
-Tim Lebbon, NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author of COLDBROOK, ECHO CITY, DAWN OF THE JEDI and THE SILENCE

'Kane is well respected in the United Kingdom, getting praise from such giants of the genre as Clive Barker, Simon Clark, Jeff Mariotte and Graham Masterton... RED is a tale about Rachael Daniels, a caseworker travelling through the modern jungle - a crime-ridden, gang-banging city - to help an elderly lady. RED not only tips its hat to "Little Red Riding Hood," but "Peter And The Wolf," and "Who's Afraid Of The Big Bad Wolf?" and every werewolf type motif in between... This time around Kane puts a twisted horror spin to it, with even a fair amount of social criticism thrown in for good measure; due to mature themes, you'll want to keep the kids away from this one... Kane does an incredible job of combing horror and humour into one tasty morsel.'
-CEMETERY DANCE Magazine

'Kane expands on the "Little Red Riding Hood" mythos with a sharply-written novella that pits a descendent of the classic fairytale character against the "real" creature of the same story. But make NO mistake: this isn't for kids! You can tell Kane had a real ball twisting time updating "Riding Hood", especially in how he has crafted this new, psycho-sexual "wolf." For the sake of not ruining anything else, let's just say RED is a real BLOODY good time.'
-HORROR FICTION REVIEW

'RED is a gleefully gruesome tale that moves at an excellent pace. Its length is a joy, reminiscent of a line from another fairy tale: "Not too big, not too small, just right." Paul Kane does a rip roaring rendition of the Red Riding Hood story… He has the gift of summing up a situation in a sentence. RED is wonderfully written; it is easy to sink one's teeth into it and devour it with relish.'
-HELLNOTES

'RED by Paul Kane is a modern-day retelling of a classic fairy tale. The character of Rachael Daniels is one that many can identify with. The monster is a terrifying hunter who has the ability to shape-shift. He is intelligent, patient, and always hungry. He is the sort of monster that does not need any supernatural powers to make him terrifying, however the added abilities make him even more dangerous. It is entirely believable that he has been doing this for centuries in cities all over Europe because he is so smart and clever, and one is reminded of tales of a dark Trickster character from legends around the world when reading this story. The suspense builds from the very fact that the reader has some idea of what is going to happen. When the woman is murdered in the restaurant bathroom, the reader knows that is not the end and is left to wonder what horrors are still to come. The whole story builds up to a rather fascinating climax…This is a good scary story for those stormy nights or bright days. It is strong enough to terrify either way and will stay in your mind for days afterwards. Stories like this don't come along very often, as all readers know.'

Fab 5 Blog Hop! :

Fabulous Five Blog Hop

I have been tagged to answer these questions by the outstanding and thought provoking author Laura Susan Johnson. Her work is without a doubt inspiring and compelling, touching on contemporary issues which forces us to challenge our view of the world around us. She is the author of Crush, and Bright. You can check out Laura’s work at  http://bright-the-book.snack.ws/.

1.)    What am I working on?

3993151
Southern nightmares is a trilogy novel with three stories that revolve around one of Trion, Georgia’s most macabre locations, Corpsewood Manor, locally known as “Devil worshipper’s mountain. A site that saw 60’s era good times filled with sex, drugs and rock‘n’roll, hosted by the gay couple that called the place home. It is also the place that saw a nightmarish horror unfold as the two men were brutally murdered and left in a manor resembling a work of art that depicted their own untimely death.

My trilogy doesn’t actually talk about that crime directly but instead focuses on three terrifying tales that take place in locations that have indirectly been touched by Devil Worshipper’s Mountain by some way.

Three stories of horror framed around the occult and ultimate sacrifice.

I - Darktree Estates; Devon learns the true meaning of "sacrifice" when it comes to his family's constant climb up the social ladder.
II- A Walk Through The Corpse Wood; A simple Saturday hike in a place of legend and long forgot horrors turns demonic for these high school friends.
III- The Council's Ring; Some places are better left undiscovered in this tale that has a couple seeking out a fabled location of witchery.

2.)  How does my work differ from others?

My work is different from other horror writers in that I focus on my stories with a more sympathetic point-of-view from that dark place that gives birth to nightmares and horror. Sort of a “he said, she said” dichotomy. The stories take the tradition view of horror and frames it with strong naturally developing LGBTS characters without sensationalizing their personas beyond what is normally found in the eclectic personalities found in society. My style of writing is very descriptive, and macabre. Although a lot of my characters are LGBT as well as Straight, my stories are relatable to all horror fans. I have been told that I do not shy away from writing the horror that unfolds in detail.

3.) Why do I write what I do?

I write about the subject matter that I do because it is the type of stories that comforted me and entertained me from as early as I can remember. I came from a clan of cousins and parents that enjoyed late night bonfires, telling ghost stories. We held séances and went to haunted cemeteries to experience the paranormal. Horror is in my blood. The first mature fiction book I read that wasn’t assigned by Elementary school course study was Stephen King’s Cujo. From that first experience I have been addicted to horror.
I have since developed a broader understanding and desire to create horror that is all inclusive storytelling-allowing for fans of all communities, backgrounds and cultures to enjoy and feel apart of the community. I would like to think that my stories speak to all fans of nightmare fiction genres without excluding or only speaking to one particular group.

4.) How does my writing process work?

My process for writing is kind of chaotic. I usually have a basic idea or scene that pops in my mind, either in a dream or just during a random moment. I don’t really focus strongly on the idea until I catch myself playing it out further, usually while doing other things or while writing another story. At that point I start rough writing the scene and expanding on the concept on paper. When I am happy with the total vision I begin drafting a story and adding characters. A lot of what I add to my stories are over-dramatized events that I work into fantasy so that it fits the characters and situations in a horror setting. In every character and situation that builds my characters backgrounds come from my own past and the experiences I have had in life. There is a little bit of truth sprinkled in my fantastical nightmares.

Who’s next on the blog hop?

I tag Char Hardin, author of the recently published Ogres of the Hickory Cottage: The Urban Fantasy Series Book 1 . She is a consummate writer with a wonderful and whimsical style of storytelling. She is also a the host of her own Blogtalkradio show Charred Remains.

My Review Of Fairy Tale Murders By Kelly Money

ftmKelly Money’s Fairy Tale Murders is a straight forward crime-thriller, that follows a dual point-of-view story about the Fairy Tale Killer, Stan and the detective hot on his trail, Kate Kingsley. The story takes place in Topeka where women begin disappearing as a new serial killer is on the prowl. His m.o. has him mailing fairy tale books with ominous, riddle-like clues written inside. Each book represents a specific victim that plays the princess in his nightmarish fantasy. It is a classic set-up that pits a predator against an equality aggressive hunter hot on his trail.

Fairy Tale Murders has a strong enough concept that seeds a pretty dark story. It plays upon the very trendy subject of fairy tales which have become very popular in recent years. The basic set-up of killer and detective works smoothly with plenty of suspense that builds as each of the character’s story opens up. The elements that have predator selecting and taking his prey does at times feel a bit too convenient and concise, eliminating any real chance for horror to permeate in the scenes. If it were a television series or movie then Fairy Tale Murders would be more Lifetime or NBC. Not that the story Money gives us is bad, I just like my thrillers a bit more exploitative or darker. The author tends to err on the milder side when describing the murders or victims suffering.

The novel does develop nicely, giving us well rounded characters and the situations are in scenarios that bring the creepy to common locations. The character of Stan seems only partially complete which is kind of annoying. Some of his logic and behavior doesn’t really feel authentic at times. It isn’t enough to kill the character or harm the story completely, I just felt that Money could have went deeper and darker into the mind of the killer, with more understanding of how a killer thinks. I guess I would have liked Stan to have read more scary. ON the other hand detective Kate Kingsley was totally believable. Her character seemed to be developed with more care. I did feel that the relationship between the protagonist and antagonist felt contrived at times, but for the most part the story pit them perfectly in a classic, entertaining, cat-n-mouse game.

Overall, Fairy Tale Murders is a nice, PG-13 thriller (in my personal opinion) with a standard set-up. Minus the few moments where the story moves a bit slow, the novel creates a thrilling story with a creative concept. Certain moments where the “fairy tale” m.o. are addressed do seem forced but the connection never feels continuously forced, most moments the concept fit nicely and feel authentic. Fairy Tale Murders is creative novel that should entertain most readers of serial killer/crime fiction, and with the strong female character of Kate Kingsley, the story fits the contemporary design that flows in this genre both in literature and live-action scenarios.

Fairy Tale Murders By Kelly Money

1Check out Kelly Money’s Fairy Tale Murders about a serial killer in the Topeka area. The book was released March 18th, 2014. “If you like Dan Brown's style, you will love Kelly Money and this book.”—Ron Mehin, Amazon review.

Women are disappearing in Topeka and with each disappearance comes another “special delivery” from a man who calls himself the Fairy Tale Murderer. Detective Kate Kingsley searches for her missing best friend, Kristen, while hot on the trail of an emerging serial killer. Is Kristen one of the killers “princesses” or is she simply the bait to lure Kate to her own Fairy Tale ending?

After he watches his controlling father, the owner of Country Haven Mortuary,
die in front of him, Stan sloughs off his meek behavior and becomes empowered
by his sudden freedom. He soon discovers that in order to get any physical
satisfaction he must murder women who resemble the females in the fairytales
his mother had once read to him.
Detective Kate Kingsley’s good friend, who was grieving the death of her mother,
is suddenly missing. Kingsley begins investigating only to find that the trail
leads her back to Country Haven Mortuary, even though there is no immediate
evidence of any wrongdoing. Meanwhile, other women end up missing and the only
clue that is left at the scene is a fairy tale book.
Stan, the fairy tale murderer, is as creepy as Hannibal Lecter, if not more so.
While he goes about the business of operating a funeral home, where there is a
crematorium he finds useful in hiding evidence, he discovers women who look
like Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, and other fairy tale characters, and then makes
them his own.
Readers will squirm and stay awake at night to finish reading Fairy Tale Murders
in hopes that this diabolical creature meets his end.

suspense began at the age of seven. This passion led Kelly to Bethany College
where she played basketball and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.

Danielle Vega’s The Merciless To Be Adapted Into A Feature Film

Deadline is reporting that Danielle Vega’s The Merciless is being adapted into a feature film by Lionsgate. The book will be released June 20th and is up for pre-order on Amazon.

1Brooklyn Stevens sits in a pool of her own blood, tied up and gagged. No one outside of these dank basement walls knows she’s here. No one can hear her scream.

Sofia Flores knows she shouldn’t have gotten involved. When she befriended Riley, Grace, and Alexis on her first day at school, she admired them, with their perfect hair and their good-girl ways. They said they wanted to save Brooklyn. They wanted to help her. Sofia didn’t realize they believed Brooklyn was possessed.

Now, Riley and the girls are performing an exorcism on Brooklyn—but their idea of an exorcism is closer to torture than salvation. All Sofia wants is to get out of this house. But there is no way out. Sofia can’t go against the other girls . . . unless she wants to be next. . . .

In this chilling debut, Danielle Vega delivers blood-curdling suspense and terror on every page. By the shockingly twisted end, readers will be faced with the most haunting question of all: Is there evil in all of us?

My Review Of Combustion By Daniel W. Kelly

combustionDaniel W. Kelly’s Combustion is an erotic horror novel that explores culture clashes , gay fetish lifestyles and community support all in a vividly detailed, exploration of trash cult literature. I must admit that this is my first time reading horror erotica, I have read the trashy gay novels that you can purchase at the adult bookstores, and horror novels are my sweet spot. I guess I am stating that the blend of erotica and horror is not my normal cup of tea, but Daniel W. Kelly’s Combustion is an entertaining, bit of trash literature that would be the written equivalent of cinema trash like “Midnight Movie” and “Mania”.

Combustion follows a gay community under attack from different elements who either want control or don’t want the gays defining a town’s identity. With bizarre deaths that are almost supernatural, different factions of a community divided in protest and turf, explorations in gay fetish culture and a basic celebration of classic crime noir, this novel offers an in-your-face, complex, somewhat exaggerative  look at how challenging it can be for LGBT people to find and build a place to call home. After the recent death of a prominent member of the gay community in Kremfort Cove, private detective Deck Waxer sets out to solve a case that has literally set the community on fire.

The story is a standard whodunit  that is stacked with gay erotica situations, creative horror elements and deliciously exploitative stereotypes. The arch is between the start of the story is a cleverly controlled decent into dark satire, and thrilling horror. Combustion isn’t a novel for all horror fans and I am not certain if the story is appealing to all blended erotica fans. I didn’t relate to a lot of what framed this book when it came to the fetish stuff, but I found it fun, amusing reading about a subculture of my community that I never quite understood. I have never really been big on exploring fetishes (I am kind of boring that way-but not judging). It was very informative, I actually learned a lot from these characters, although I do feel that these characters were extreme representations of the subcultures within the gay community.

The juxtaposition between the erotica and the horror was a nice, even-paced ride. Not to mention that the story lead into a dark “last act” that really hits the horror aspect full on. My only critic for the novel was the complete, elaborate attention paid to the erotica portion of the story that seemed to b lacking somewhat with the horror portion. I would have loved more horror and less erotica. That is just me, but with that being said I really enjoyed the experience of learning about horror erotica and will continue reading Daniel W. Kelly’s novels.

My Review Of Black Star Canyon: Episode 1 By Creep Creepersin

black star canyonBlack Star Canyon: Episode 1 by Creep Creepersin begins the foreboding events that unfold just as the body of a young Jane Doe is found brutally murdered not far from a prominent neighborhood nestled in the Black Star Canyon community. The story continues each week in episodes much like a television series. Here it is honored in a thrilling, well written, very descriptive narrative that is mature psychological horror befitting any cable show.

Black Star Canyon is a town shrouded in darkness, fulled by malice and nestled in horrors. Creep Creepersin has set out to create a written thriller drama series as wicked as any television show, and as well written too. The characters are skewed somewhere between quirky offbeat and lethal sociopaths. "Episode 1" sets up a thrilling story with a tense and ominous arch that I am sure will have me on the edge, begging for more episodes. The characters, their questionable nature and the over all shadiness of it all coddled within this town of Black Star Canyon is an American Gothic that is has me engaged in a series that is sure to be entertaining.

My Review Of Bedlam Stories

BedlamStoriesBefore Bedlam Stories brings it’s twisted mash-up of Fairtyale Horror to the big screen check out the whole dark nightmare in Bedlam Stories novel form. The story is the dreamscape of Pearry Teo and written by Christine Converse. The story is a enveloping mash-up horror show that brings together two iconic fantasy lands, Wonderland and Oz. Teo has taken everything we know of the two beloved characters of Alice and Dorothy and twisted their worlds into very dark, nightmarish visions.  Bedlam Stories is set in inside a decaying asylum where the staff have sinister motives that are meant to corrupt and pervert both Alice’s and Dorothy’s unique gifts and connection to their mystical wonderlands.

Without giving too  much of the story away, Bedlam Stories creates a world that challenges the classic concept of Alice. She is a dark, disturbed child of horror with no remorse or compassion. Her fairytale companions are nothing more than demonic messengers of revenge that will be pitted against the companions of Dorothy. The story is told through the point of view of a new character that Teo has introduced into this dichotomy of worlds that clash within the rusted and ruined walls of Bedlam asylum. The tale is complex, filled with chilling descriptions of macabre situations.

Bedlam stories is only the first chapter in this insane horror tale so most of the book is a story builder to more terrifying, intense drama to come. The visual descriptions of the characters situational climaxes for the most part are meant to set up the coming vision of the film that Teo plans for Bedlam Stories. Christine Converse’s writing brings to life the visions of Bedlam Stories in disturbing realistic intensity. They are deliciously dark tastes of the demented world that sees an evil Alice by forced design rail against all that she comes in contact with, facing a formidable foe in a epic clash of will and unrestrained emotional determination that will pit personal demons against personal demons. It is all very deep and thrilling, with enough complexity to keep you on edge as Bedlam Stories phantasmagoric tale unfolds.

For the most part Bedlam Stories is a creative, unique dark vision that offers a new reality for Alice and Dorothy that goes far beyond what the two characters ever endured in their respective adventures that we all grew up on. It is as if American Horror Story and Once Upon A Time melded into the abyss then spat back a malformed mutant creation that  writhes in the suffrage of nightmares. Some moments in the novel seem a bit expected and anticipated but for most of the story everything unfolds in spectacularly suspenseful originality. Bedlam Stories is a nice, dark read that fans of horror and both Wonderland and Oz should enjoy. A definite good read.
