My Review Of “The Great American Serial Killer”

GASK-DVD-CoverThe Great American Serial Killer” is an Indie film based on the serial killer Robert Kemp. In the 90’s Kemp savagely raped, tortured, and murdered thirty-two people before being caught and sentenced to death. This film brings the horrifying events to life through a sort of retrospective as the story is told from the point of view of Robert Kemp through a series of interviews led by Dr. Jeremiah Stone. Directed by Saint Matthew and starring Todd Servo, Angelina Leigh and Eddie Benevich.

“The Great American Serial Killer” is a dark and somber film that explores a more fictionalized account of Robert Kemp’s specific style and mind set. Although the film is very low budget and has a few quirks in the dialogue, mostly coming from the character of Robert Kemp, this movie is pretty well directed. It tries to tell a serious story without going for the campy or flashy approach that tends to turn serial killers into clowns or cartoons. A lot of the scenes actually come across as snuff material displaying a realness that makes the film seem like a real crime scene unfolding on film. It is raw and very uncensored even with the low budget.

This film at times is disturbing to watch mostly because even with the unordered and almost improve approach of Todd Servo’s character these were real crimes and the story for the most part is based on true events. The soundtrack and atmosphere keeps with the classic eerie creepfest reminiscent of the 80’s slasher films like “The Prowler” and “New Year’s Evil” which accents the sinister subject matter of this film. If you’re a fan of low budget Indie films and serial killer movies then you will like this film a lot. I had never really thought of Robert Kemp that much and now I wish he wasn’t on my mind now after seeing his particular kind of fucked-up disturbia!

Check Out The Teaser Trailer For Zombie Love Story “Warm Bodies”

Warm-Bodies-Poster-Zombies love people, especially their brains. But R (Nicholas Hoult) is different. He’s alive inside, unlike the hundreds of other grunting, drooling undead—all victims of a recent plague that drove the remaining survivors into a heavily guarded city. Now the Zombies roam about an airport terminal, searching for human prey and living in fear of the vicious Boneys, the next undead incarnation.
One day, R and his best friend M lumber toward the city in search of food. There, R first sets his eyes on JULIE (Teresa Palmer), a beautiful human. Determined to save her—first from the other Zombies and then from the Boneys—R hides her in his home, a cluttered 747 aircraft. Julie is terrified, and R’s grunted assurances of “Not…eat” do little to calm her. But when R begins to act more human than Zombie, coming to her defense, refusing to eat human flesh, and even speaking in full sentences, Julie realizes that R is special.
After a few close calls with the Boneys, and with her father mounting an armed search for her, Julie realizes she can’t hide forever. So she sneaks back home, leaving R broken-hearted. Desperate to see her, R decides to comb his hair, stand a little straighter, and impersonate a human long enough to get past the city guards. If only he can prove to the humans that Zombies can change, maybe R and Julie’s love might stand a chance. But with the rampaging Boneys heading toward the city and Julie’s father intent on killing R and his Zombie friends, the stage is set for an all-out battle between the living and the undead.
A genre-bending tale of love and transformation, WARM BODIES is a story about a boy who loves a girl…for more than just her body.”

My Review Of “Nacho Mountain”

nacho mountainI am extending my movie reviews beyond the sci-fi and horror realm with this film. I received a screener in the mail for “Nacho Mountain” which I knew just by name alone this was not a horror or b movie sci-fi flick. The film was first released in 2009 and now is being made available through a wider release on DVD. It is a low brow comedy much like the classic National Lampoon films only with a smaller budget. Keefer has a talent. He can eat. So when he gets fired from his job, finds his girl getting banged by a tranny, then gets a ticket, he finds he has no direction. Its not until his good friend Meegosh sets up FOOD WARS, an underground food eating competition in his friends basement. Word gets out and everybody in town wants a piece of the champ. But its not until the towns healthy Mayor Fingstal tries to shut things down using his two cronies, Officer Slivjack and Biggsley, thats when things really heat up. Then it all comes down to one final food battle from hell, the Nacho Mountain!

Directed by Mitch Csanadi and starring Kevin Interdonato, Jensen Bucher and Jay Larson. This movie was actually pretty funny. From the first scene the crude and explicit humor sets a clear tone that this film is intended to make you laugh. And laugh I did. The jokes were dirty and sometimes offensive and the acting was over the top exaggerated. There is almost a nonstop dialogue of profanities and school yard fart jokes on top of ridiculous slacker hyped profundities of the asinine. “Nacho Mountain” is the “Balls Of Fury” of the gluttonous world of competitive eating. I found more things I liked about this film than things to criticize so I if your part of that late night Adult Swim world then see this movie if you haven’t already!

Nacho Mountain

My Review Of “Future World: City Of Mass Destruction”

future world“Future World” is director Daniel Falicki’s tribute to “Heavy Metal”. The film is set in a post apocalyptic landscape during the year 30, 000. It is a completely unique vision, Grand Rapids in the throes of a power struggle amongst the city's elite dynasties, Devoz Corp, Stealbase and the Filmore Collection. The film is a wild and brilliant blend of live action and animation. The story is one told in countless video games and graphic novels about corporate domination in a post apocalyptic society but never has there been one of such vivid and spectacular originality and creativity brought to life the way Falicki has in this movie. It plays like a saga destined for trilogy and most likely housed within an intense cult status of such bizarre materials.

The story is cool and very interesting. The back drop is sci-fi eye candy and the soundtrack is hypnotic. I didn’t expect much going into this film but I was very surprised in how almost instantly I became hooked to the plots epic and shifting stories that almost carried out like an anthology with a wrap around that invaded the several mini-stories. Yet the film is a pretty cool and often amusing film filled with out of this world mutants and stoners and almost barbarian warrior like saviors. It was like watching an adult swim show that actually didn’t suck and reached a more mature audience. I think anyone who is into gaming or graphic novels will enjoy this film. I don’t play video games nor do I read graphic novels but I appreciate the level of talent displayed in them and I really enjoyed this movie. It is a very cool sci-fi/fantasy action/anime explosion of wow! The film’s original title was G.R. 30K.

Chemical Burn

Clockwork Dolls By William Meikle

Book Worth Reading:

clockwork dollsWilliam Meikle’s Clockwork Dolls releases on January 29th from DarkFuse. The novella explores the almost supernatural and transcendent possibilities of the true power and construct of the human mind. From the brain and all that lies within is there more than just the simple mass induction of chemical reactions that create sustainable function. Or is there more to it. Some unseen intelligence at work that may provide those age old answers to man’s questions.

Does all human passion, all memory, all imagination come merely from the chemistry in our brains, like the movements of a clock follow from the arrangement of its cogs and wheels? Are we just clockwork dolls? Or is there an organizing principle at work, something we can ask for answers to the important questions of existence... something that might answer?

Dave Burns has asked.

Now he, and his friends, might not live long enough to understand the reply.

Mark your calendars and check it out here! also you can read an excerpt from the novella at the Darkfuse site.

“Big Tit Zombie” Bustin’ In America On Nov. The 19th

Alright all you horny little zombidites feast a moment on this flesh. The Japanese horror/comedy “Big Tit Zombie” will arrive on DVD in the U.S. on November the 19th. The film is directed by Takao Nakano and as you can tell by the artwork this is very edgy hard hitting expose on the zombie apocalypse-NOT! It is actually a witty comedy that has four strippers unleashing the zombie horde on the world. Check out the trailer below and click here for the seller link.

big tit zombieRecently returned to Japan from a stint in Mexico, exotic dancer Lena Jodo (Aoi) gets what she hopes will be a temporary gig dancing at a run-down hot springs resort in a deserted suburban town. Her fellow strippers – Ginko (Kasumi), Maria (Sakuri), Nene (Tamayo) and Dana (Io Aikawa) – seem to spend most of their downtime sitting around bitching at each other, until one afternoon, after discovering a hidden door in their dressing room, they decide to break the monotony by venturing into the club’s basement. There, they unearth a mysterious well and, nearby, a dusty volume that Maria declares is a rare copy of the Book of the Dead.
Reading aloud from the tome, Maria inadvertently summons the dead back to life and soon Japan is overrun by rampaging flesh-eaters. For the strippers, however, that’s of no interest. For the time being, at least, the only zombies they are worried about are those who have descended upon their club and are ready to chow down on their bare, tasty and voluptuous bodies. What’s worse, though, is that Maria, on discovering she has the power to control the undead as her slaves, has gone power mad and is intent on ruling the world with the help of her zombie army. Arming themselves with some swords and chainsaws that are handily lying around, the remaining busty babes are forced to employ their formidable ass-kicking skills in a fight to the un-death!

“Beyond Apollo” Movie Looking Good For Sci-Fi

beyond apolloThe sci-fi film “Beyond Apollo” based on Barry Malzberg’s controversial novel is shaping up to be a stellar science fiction saga. The novel has been around for over 30 years and is a sci-fi reader must. With a new Apollo inspired poster and a beautifully lookbook unveiling the classic 60 future industrial contemporary style and artistic format for the movie adaptations concept and a website that is as mysterious and intriguing as any space age conspiracy can muster, “Beyond Apollo” is a film that already has my attention and excitement. The project is being helmed by Michael Grodner and set to star Bill Pullman, Scott Speedman and Ali Larter. Imagine  “Apollo 18” with the awesome production of “Solaris” and an almost doomed haunting awareness of the darker side of the universe and you will have “Beyond Apollo”.

The first two-man mission to Venus is aborted in mid-flight and abruptly returns back to Earth. When rescue crews go to retrieve the space capsule, they make a startling discovery: The Captain is missing there is no sign of his body whatsoever - and strangely enough, the lone surviving astronaut has no clue about what took place.

Beyond Apollo tells the riveting story of when that astronaut, Harry Evans, returns to earth and must answer to the authorities about what really happened on board the doomed flight to Venus. His mind-bending struggle to figure that out is a harrowing journey through the possibilities: Was the Captain murdered? Did he commit suicide? Or were alien beings responsible for his demise? The answer, as Evans will eventually discover, is far more terrifying than anything he could possibly imagine. Check out the website here and and watch the lookbook here!

My Review Of “Terror In America: Preparing For The Next 9/11”

“Terror In America” is a documentary that explores possible terrorist attacks and the changing nature of terror in a world after 9/11. Here is what the film’s description details: n light of the global terrorism that now stalks us daily, can anyone really feel secure? Are you prepared for these perilous times? This is the harsh and unpleasant reality we must face – an issue no one can afford to disregard or side step. Former White House leaders President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, The Director of the FBI and the Director of FEMA all warned us that we have entered a new phase of world conflict and that time is NOW.
terrorNow here is what I think of this “documentary”. For me this felt like total fear mongering propaganda. It came of as biased right wing rhetoric that is designed to create xenophobia and a hatred of Muslims. There were no unbiased opinions or point of view to counter any other the information within this film nor where there any representations of the positive results of the “war on terror” or desire to show that Americans are actually safer now than before against terrorist. It only propagated  the need to create a stronger since of insecurity. I feel that this film holds a clear agenda to instill a greater fear of the world and had no educational value or sense of perspective that would enlighten anyone anchored in reality. The only true and honest moment is the preparedness information that is shown at the end which dictates the Red Cross’s requirements for citizens to be prepared in the event of a terrorist attack. I did not care for this documentary but maybe some right wing nut in the flatland of the far Midwest may get something from it.

My Review Of “My Pure Joy”

my pure joyJames Cullen Bressack’s “My Pure Joy” a psychological horror film that shows the steady breakdown of one teenager’s sanity. His unguided and frustrated life collapses into a downward spiral of dark psychosis which manifest in fits of homicidal reaction to the world around him. The film is about a boy named Adam who appears to be a normal slacking teenager, but underneath...his mind has been so rotted by trauma from his past and the gory films he watches, that he has blurred the lines between reality and pretend! This prompts Adam to start killing people in similar ways to films he watches, making sure to put his own little spin on it. It stars Alexei Ryan, Lisa Frantz, Cory Jacob, Laura Meadows, Jon Bloch, JD Fairman, Chris Chandler, Mark Glasser, Kevin Flood, Phillip Andrew Christopher, Emily Bordignon, Bailey Gaddis and Kimberly Night.
This film is a low budget blend between the artist interpretation of extreme psychosis and the raw grittiness of torture-slasher stylization which comes off as a very intense blend of grindcore and a coming-of-age thriller. There are moments that have an almost real presence of dark melodrama and expressionistic noir. It is dark and graphic which feel a lot like watching the gory aftermath of a horrible tragedy unfold before your eyes. It feels like true horror as it addresses the loss of innocence and disillusionment of youth on the outside looking into a world they don’t understand and doesn’t understand them. Exposing the distance that is often present between the broken mind and the society that raises them or actually the lack of actually being raised. Combined with an obsessive grip to horror films which connect him to the psychological ties between a dying father and a past of tragic abandonment this story sheds a shadowy light on some very real issues in todays family dynamic.
“My Pure Joy” is a raw and gritty nightmare that pulls at your psyche the way fears torment the mental. It has an almost home movie feel that plays with the snuff exploitation atmosphere in a very in-your-face bluntness. Dark, edgy and intense. Yet there is a very passionate artistic approach to the tragic tale that shows a sense of compassion for the short coming in a young persons life that could lead them down a sinister path such as the one Bressack exposes in this film. It is graphic and raw so it may not appeal to everyone. I like abrasive and gritty indie and low budget films mostly because they do take on the more unadulterated expression of horror without the fantastical disconnect that a lot of films with a wider audience reach tend to show. “My Pure Joy” is disturbing and twisted psychotic ballet filled with visual displays of terror. A cool urban nightmare that is classic Bressack.

My Review Of “Treasure Chest Of Horrors II”

images (18)
Treasure Chest Of Horrors II” is the second in the anthology series from Psykik Junky Pictures. This time around it is hosted by Mona Screamalot and her clan of delinquent family members. There are six tales of bizarre, psychotic plays of truly twisted visions. The anthology like a lot of the films I have come to know from these guys are a total tribute to Kaufman and TROMA studios. I am glad to see the new generation of indie minds that TROMA has contaminated finally making their presence known. I loved the old TROMA stuff and much like those flicks these shorts carry that same demented theme of outlandish characters and unusual and outlandish stories of twisted lives. Low budget this tacky is such a treat to enjoy especially when the humor is so dark and witty.

Trendish is a hilarious off-beat short that is straight out of a hallucinatory dreamscape. It is a truly black comedy that is completely bizarre. This is a fun twisted little short film.

Baby Cakes is a strange and gross short film. There are some funny moments, dark but funny. I did enjoy the “baby tamer”. He is hilarious on screen.

Bloody Hell is an unusual but darker story that makes absolutely no sense. “Kids prospecting for oil in the middle of the woods in 2012 America?!” That aside it takes a serious tone which allowed for a creepier story. Still it is a “What The Hell” short film that made no sense at all to me. I did like the voice over effect.

The Prom is another strange and off-beat short. It is filled with a lot oddities. It is twisted and funny.

The Caged Girl? What a twisted tale indeed. A story of obsession and relationships in bizarro world. Like most of the shorts in this anthology this one is totally TROMA. This is a love psychotic.

Pain In The Gums is a short that is weird. It is a glimpse into Psychoville. It is very out there and has classic Kaufman written all over it. It is gross and unusual and hilarious.

If you love low budget gross-out flicks that true to the style set forth by cult gurus like Lloyd Kaufman and TROMA studios then you will enjoy this anthology. It is low brow, funny and tacky. It is also very entertaining and Shawn C. Phillips is hilarious.

During the trip, these young people will be kidnapped by a weird family who are working for an organized group belonging to the highest political circles of the region.”

“The story has been inspired by real criminal events that took place after Pinochet’s government. In the nearly 90′s, dozens of kidnappings were reported and the whereabouts of this people were never discovered. Those incidents cannot be ascribed to the political context of the previous decades in our country. An investigation carried out in 1996 concluded that it was all plotted by a highly powerful – in terms of political and economical influence – group, which for years subsisted on the shadow of some small city in central zone of Chile”.

Dark Region Kicks Off The Black Labyrinth Imprints Series With The Walls Of The Castle

Book Worth Reading:

On November the 13th Dark Regions will kick off it’s new novellas imprint called The Black Labyrinth with Tom Piccirilli’s The Walls Of The Castle. The series will be some of Dark Region’s darker tales from some of the best new horror writers to come along.
the walls of the castleDescription

In the labyrinthine maze of endless corridors, annexes, and wings of the enormous medical complex known as The Castle prowls a grief-stricken man determined to redeem himself and bring justice for those victims incapable of doing it for themselves.
During the four months that his son lay dying, ex-con Kasteel lost his job, his wife, and nearly his mind.  He became a fixture at the Castle, a phantom prowling the halls in the deep night, a shadow of his former self until he faded from sight and was forgotten altogether.
Now, without any life to return to, he takes it upon himself to become the Castle's guardian.  He lives off the grid hiding among the hundreds of miles of twisting passages, rooms, offices, and underground parking structures.  Despair, confusion, and terror are the natural state and trade of any hospital:  Not only must the patients endure disease and infirmity, but others are victims of physical and sexual abuse from the outside world or from cruel security guards.
The Castle was originally a colonial Dutch settlement: a village that grew into a town which grew into a city and at last became a hospital.  Kasteel has lost his very identity to this place, taking for himself the original Dutch name for "Castle."
Kasteel sleeps in empty operating theaters, sneaks food from the cafeteria, hacks into computers, and is privy to both staff and patient files.  Using his skills as a burglar he tracks down the attackers, the deceivers, and the killers.
In the psychiatric wing's day rooms and gardens long-suffering patient Hedgewick is Kasteel's only friend.  Hedgewick sees his father's ghost and claims to fight in a gladiatorial arena while the hospital guards bet on the winners.  Kasteel and Hedge often meet in the Fool's Tower, a ten-story high steeple once used to quarantine yellow fever victims a century ago, overlooking acres of gardens.  A place where family members go to pray for their loved ones, and the distraught often commit suicide.
But a new name is now whispered in the Castle: Abaddon, the ancient name for the angel of death.  A brain-damaged woman has visions and speaks only to Kasteel.  Abaddon is a killer, a man lost to the Castle like Kasteel himself, wandering the corridors searching out victims.  Even as Abaddon hunts the innocent, Kasteel hunts Abaddon, eager for a final showdown that may at last set him free.
An atmospheric yet action-packed, mature psychological thriller that is part examination into the bonds of family and part treatise on the nature of identity, THE WALLS OF THE CASTLE explores the deepest areas of what makes us who we are.   With a noir sensibility and complexity of character, the novella is a hybrid psychological thriller that's part suspense tale, part family saga, and part literate mystery.

Snips From The New “Silent Night” Trailer!

silent night 5I am so excited to finally see the trailer for “Silent Night” 2012. I decided to snip a few stills from the trailer to post about this holiday horror flick that is one of favorite new moments of this just beginning holiday season!

The film opens in select theatres which I protest! I feel it should get wider release especially with the holidays and how well horror is doing these gloriously gory new days. The remake is more of a revision of the classic cult film about a killer in a Santa suit. Can’t wait for this film to come out!!!!!

Check Out The Teaser Trailer For “The Graveyard Feeder”

Probably one of the coolest and actually funny horror comedy trailers I have seen in a long while. A simple premise and standard gags go along way in this trailer for “The Graveyard Feeder”. A film that has a man tormented (sort of) by his father’s rotting corpse. Desperate to rid the cemetery of a cursed Necromancer that has been buried within the grounds the man sets out to remove the witch before his father’s remains are destroyed by the ‘mancer. Directed by Rich Robinson and starring Tom Barker, Sean Bridgers this film looks to be a lot of fun. Check out the trailer below!!!

JinVillage72lgWhere only terror lives!

For generations, the inhabitants of the remote Jin Village in China had almost no contact with the outside world. Nearby villages whispered of murder and odd disappearances. Then the Jin villagers vanished.

Now, one hundred years later, American historian Malcolm Wang and a team of archaeologists arrive at Jin Village to excavate the ruins. They uncover evidence of a long history of human sacrifice and cannibalism. What Malcolm and his companions don’t know is that Jin Village is still very much alive. The old woman moved through the black forest. There was no wind, and the trees were still. She glided slowly, her feet inches above the ground, dissipating into nothing whenever she came to a tree, and materializing again on the other side.
The moon was fat and strong tonight, not that it mattered to Mother Chen. She saw perfectly well in the dark. The Jade Mountains were her real home, but she had stalked these woods for centuries. She knew them well.
Ahead she saw a small clearing in the woods, almost invisible to the naked eye. Mother Chen smiled. She came to the edge of the clearing and landed on the grass. A jolt of pain shot through her limbs, out to the tips of her fingers. Mother Chen bared her teeth, felt a surge of energy that climaxed with the pain and disappeared seconds later.
It had been more than a century since she was last here, in her Jin Village. There wasn’t much left. The temples were little more than piles of rocks on the ground. Animals had made their home next to the stone wall. She saw no traces of the wooden huts.
No matter. Mother Chen loved this tiny place, the village of her birth. She had loathed it as a child, when she ran away, broken and frightened. But then she had returned, had punished the guilty and thrown their sins back in their faces.
And what she had created after that was…marvelous.
It had been a pity to leave this place, but Mother Chen had no choice in the matter. Unbidden, the face of the man who drove her out surfaced in her mind. Thinking of that small peasant with the frightened eyes made Mother Chen gag with hate.
No, it was best not to dwell on him. She had greater concerns. New people were coming, people from a world she did not understand. Several had already come. Soon there would be more. They meant to wipe her village from the earth, to sweep it away. Mother Chen looked at a stack of square, metal objects, piled in a spot near the village well. She had never seen anything built with such precision. It made her uneasy.
Mother Chen’s eyes drifted down to the deformed parts of her body. Even now she could see the spots where the arches of her feet had broken, the scars where pieces of glass had burrowed into her flesh. She had suffered because she spent her human life living as a frightened rabbit.
No more. She would never accept that again. Let these new ones come. If they meant to take what was hers, she would bleed them dry.

“The Profane Exhibit” Is In Production

profane exhibitThe Horror Anthology “The Profane Exhibit” has moved into the production stages of development . The list of directors is astounding and the stories are epic. I am glad this anthology is moving along nicely.

Deep within the underbelly of Paris, there is a club which is the home of a secret, wicked society. At first it resembles an ordinary fetish or goth nightclub, but hidden within the cavernous building are many hidden rooms. One of which is known as “The Room of Souls,” a private gathering place of the world’s richest and most evil people. Their host is the elegant yet frightening Madame Sabatier.
the profane exhibit
For their amusement, each member takes a turn and spins a true tale of their depravity: A good wife learns that her husband goes out at night to abduct and murder young women; A botched suicide attempt leads to a drug induced dream; A girl is believed to be possessed by a demon and her overly religious parents enlist the help of a corrupt reverend who has his own sinister plans; We are invited inside the deranged mind of a respected surgeon as he takes us on a guided tour of life, death, and everything in between; A young street prostitute crosses paths with a charismatic flesh trader and is forced to take an unspeakable journey of sex, violence, and murder; A nun is abducted off the streets of Rome and held captive for over a year turning her into a feral, murderous creature to be unleashed on society; A chance encounter on a fateful bus ride for an unsuspecting girl who dreams of riches and fame is her undoing; A man picks up a woman in a nightclub and soon finds himself at the mercy of a cult of women who believe consumption of their sacrifice will bring them to their highest form of female dominance; An unflinching look into darkest Africa where human life is traded for fortune and the most unspeakable atrocities are committed. It truly is a profane world, and this is THE PROFANE EXHIBIT. There are no boundaries.
Check out the movie’s Facebook Page to keep track of this one! I know I will!!
