Opening Scene From Indie Slasher “North Woods”

north woodsCheck out the opening scene from indie slasher horror “North Woods”. The film is written and directed by Chris Moore, co-written by Jason Kasper and stars Debbie Rochon, Chris Moore, Sarah McCraw, Andrew Roach, J.K. Michaels, Alex Erin Johnson, Amanda Grussaute, Lauren Orsini, Liddy Carmichael, Andria Smith, Megan O'Bryan. “North Woods” is giallo inspired by the greats like Dario Argento, Mario Bava, and David Lynch. It focuses on the golden era of modern horror-the 70’s and early 80’s.

From within the woods, a blood spattered young man, named John Prescott, runs out in front of a car, terrified and muttering gibberish. Enter Dr. Pamela Alley, an esteemed psychologist, and Detective Morris West, her secret lover from the local police force, who have just been assigned the boy's case. As the teen begins telling his diabolical tale of a local weekend vacation gone horribly wrong, it becomes clear that nothing is ever what it seems when a very troubled substitute teacher, with a webbed past of nightmares, emerges as the center of the proceedings. What keys does she hold to the nearly phantasmic events surrounding the area for the last several years?
Perhaps some secrets are better left in...the North Woods.

There is currently a crowd funding campaign taking place over on Indiegogo for the project. You can also keep up with the deets for “North Woods” by liking them on Facebook, and following the progress on Twitter. Also check out the teaser trailer for “North Woods” below the sneak peek clip.

My Review Of “In The House Of Flies”

InTheHouseOfFliesGabriel Carrer’s psychological thriller “In The House Of Flies” is a slow-burn nightmare set in 1988, with the abduction of a young couple at the end of their fun night out. The film stars Lindsay Smith, Ryan Kotack, and Henry Rollins. “In The House Of Flies” blends classic Americana with elements of visceral horror and emotional melodrama.

The story is a strong, well thought out situation that builds on a steady, tense chain of events framed by a claustrophobic, and hopeless setting. The acting is pretty tight, with most of the film’s thrills coming from the situational reaction of the captive couple at the mercy of an unknown psychopath. The concept is pretty customary in modern horror with characters forced to play out the twisted games of a nightmarish persona. The overall effect of the drama, meant to cause chills and tension becomes slightly tedious over the course of the film, but the cast manages to create an uncomfortable, emotional atmosphere which allowed me to build a connection, and feel invested.

The special effects are subdued, limited practical effects that offer a mix of gore, and grit. The majority of “In The House Of Flies” effectiveness as a horror film comes from the cramped setting, creepy props, insects, and macabre atmosphere. These things are 90 percent of the films horror element, sometimes giving us chilly realness, other times remaining inert properties. The sound effects do offer up an extra dose of despair, which helps to create that suspenseful unease effect. I had no real complaints on that aspect of this film.

Overall “In The House Of Flies” fails to really be horrific, often the film becomes a bit boring. The slow paces, mild nature did little to thrill me. The drama, writing, and effects were pretty stellar for an indie micro-budget film like this. Carrer’s shows real talent with “In The House Of Flies” but the lack of action, and real energy keeps the film from really excelling considering the concept. The ending is a bit underwhelming, considering the cool vibe created by the opening scenes. It would have been nice if Carrer would have finished with that level of energy considering how sedate the majority of the film tends to be.

Poster And News Update For “Beyond Skyline”

Beyond SkylineA promo poster and some pretty interesting news have come out for sci-fi sequel “Beyond Skyline”. The film is a follow up to the 2010 Eric Belfour starred flick. It seems that Frank Grillo and Iko Uwais, Yayan Ruhian (From “The Raid”) have signed on to the project. “Beyond Skyline” is in pre-production with filming scheduled to begin in December, in Singapore.

The plot center on a “detective who fights to free his son from a terrifying alien warship.” The detective is played by Grillo while Uwais will play the leader of an underground resistance movement. No word on Ruhian’s character. What makes the two “The Raid” stars association with the film even more interesting is the two doubling as action/stunt coordinators.

(I kind of feel a ‘Falling Sky’ vibe just based on the info provided-just a bit more elaborate and global.)

Details On Dario Argento’s Return To Horror

the sandmanPress Release:
Legendary Italian horror director Dario Argento today launched a campaign for his latest film THE SANDMAN on Indiegogo, the world’s largest crowd funding platform. Starring iconic punk singer Iggy Pop as a serial killer dubbed “The Sandman”, the sleek and contemporary thriller is set in the 21st century with deep and twisted primal roots stemming from the dark forests of Germany. The campaign kicks off Indiegogo’s horror month. The month long celebration of all things scary will feature weekly blog posts from industry-insiders as well as a partnership with leading global cinema website Twitch film, which just celebrated their 10th anniversary.

Fans can contribute to THE SANDMAN campaign here.

“I was thrilled to read the script, because I recognized right away, this one was written for me,” said Dario Argento, Director of THE SANDMAN. “I’m so excited that for the first time in my career, I will be able to involve my fans so early in the process and have them play an integral role in my next film. Also, working with Iggy Pop is amazing! Such an interesting and intense personality! I would not even simply say “actor” that does not cover it. I would rather say ‘a unique presence’! Welcome to the unique world of THE SANDMAN!”

“I have long been thrilled and fascinated by the amazing films of Mr. Argento,” said Iggy Pop, Lead Actor in THE SANDMAN. “All of which are master works. Yes, and also compellingly strange, beautiful, and full of relentless terror. If I could play the Sandman for him it would make my life complete. I hope I have not just written my own epitaph.”

The script, crafted by David Tully, was specifically written for Argento to enable him to make the ultimate horror movie masterpiece with the complete directorial control for which he has long awaited. The film is brimming full of references to Argento’s past classic horror films such as SUSPIRIA and DEEP RED, while standing on its own as a sleek contemporary thriller.

Claudio Simonetti, Argento’s longtime musical collaborator (DEEP RED, SUSPIRIA, TENEBRE, PHENOMENA) has been tapped to compose the haunting score. Scott Weiland has crafted the song “Way she moves” which will be the title song for the film. The song was recorded by Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts and will also appear on their new record coming in February next year.

The Canadian and German film production team lead by producers Daniela Tully, Jeff Rogers and Rob Heydon, is looking to raise $250,000 to aid in making their and Argento’s dreams of creating the ultimate nightmare into a reality. Fans will have access to incredible rewards for contributing such as personal messages from Dario and Iggy, THE SANDMAN set tours, and a role as a black-gloved killer in the film!

Dario Argento began as a screenwriter, penning (along with Bernardo Bertolucci) the Sergio Leone masterpiece ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (1968). After its release, Argento wrote and directed THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE (1970), an international hit that began his legendary career as master of the thriller (with films like DEEP RED and TENEBRE) and horror (SUSPIRIA, INFERNO), as well as fusions of the two (PHENOMENA). His often disturbing and horrific films possess a transcendent visual beauty that combines withhis talent for weaving supremely menacing mysteries to create waking celluloid nightmares that burn themselves into the audience’s psyche.

Shivertown Road Films and Daniela Tully are repped by attorney Clifford Lo.

My Review Of “Le Fear II: Le Sequel”

Le Fear IIJason Croot’s “Le Fear II: Le Sequel” picks up the same story as the first mockumentary-“Le Fear”. Only this time film director Carlos has a bigger budget and more at stake. The film stars Andrew Tiernan, Aiko Horiuchi, Ian Cullen, Denise Moreno, Scherrikar Bell, Roxy Sternberg and Victoria Hopkins. The plot has the sequel dealing with more outside influence from investors, crazy crew members, and a myriad of problems that once more prove Croot’s ability to make the viewer laugh.

“Le Fear 2” is funnier, smarter, and more entertaining than the first “Le Fear”. Croot has taken the things that worked in 2010 and amplified the absurdity and insanity to new levels of hilarity. The energy is strong, the cast are on point, and the story is pure craziness. There is the same ability to create genuine chemistry between the cast that is necessary to make mockumentaries work. And work it does, I laughed harder at “Le Fear 2” than I did with “Le Fear”.

Overall “Le Fear 2” is a better film than the first one. There are moments when I felt an anti-Nigerian/Afrikaans subtext in the story, but that is argumentative.  For the most part so much about “Le Sequel” works so well all you can do is sit back and enjoy as the insanity begins. The steady, casual nature of the film’s tone allows for easy viewing, with a simple story, and real hilarious writing. Jason Croot is obviously a true talent when it comes to comedy writing. I really recommend “Le Fear 2” for all fans of Brit comedy/mockumentary films-actually not just Brit but on a globel level, the “Le Fear” films and Jason Croot’s comedy are both brilliant.

My Review Of “Le Fear”

le fear“Le Fear” is a mockumentary, horror/comedy written and directed by Jason Croot. I was sent a link to review “Le Fear 2: Le Sequel”-that review to follow this one. Before I actually wrote the review for part deux, I wanted to see the first film. It is a low-budget production that stars some impressive indie talent, Kyri Saphiris, Spencer Austin, Lucinda Rhodes-Flaherty, Ilona Saic, Andre Samson and Meaw Davis. The story revolves around an indie filmmaker setting out to make a horror film.

The concept and story are pretty simple in design, with shaky cam work documenting the whole experience of making an indie horror film from pre-production up to the final cut. Jason Croot creates a pretty fun experience for fans of Brit comedy. The writing is above low-budget, the acting is on point, and the characters feel authentic. Films that come to mind when watching “Le Fear” are “The Big Tease” and “In The Loop”.  Croot is among the few writers and directors that seems to have a knack for developing something great from the mundane and ordinary.

“Le Fear” does have moments when the characters fail to live up to the momentum created, mostly when stretching the scene fully out to top comic relief status. It doesn’t happen with all the characters, and for most of the film the cast of characters are hilariously quirky, and honestly funny. Overall I was pleased with “Le Fear” and the ability for Jason Croot to create entertaining characters, direct the talent into performing with authenticity and a natural fluidity on camera. The chemistry is perfect and I found it impressive, the film feels like a higher budget film than it actually is.

My Review Of “Kingdom Come”

Greg A. Sager directed paranormal horror “Kingdom Come”  brings spirituality to the front of horror story telling. The film stars Ry Barrett, Camille Hollett-French, William Foley, Jason Martorino, Soroush Saeidi, Chelsey Marie, Jo Jo Karume and Katie Uhlmann. The plot sets up a group of strangers waking in a creepy location with no exits, temporary amnesia and something stalking them. It is a classic framing device that has the “dying conscience facing retribution in limbo” scenario playing out in macabre and horrific melodrama.

Okay I know that I just did a “spoiler” no-no but the story concept is obvious from the start in “Kingdom Come”, and because often times movies that play this curious spiritual situation out can be boring, I want that out of the way because this film is actually interesting, entertaining and creative. Once that manifestum is dealt with then it opens the story up to be enjoyed for the character developments, chilling aspects of horror, and backstory reveals. All of which relies on writing, directing and creativity at the most basic  ability. “Kingdom Come” does a pretty good job shedding the tiresome cliché , and gives a nice, creative, story.

The cinematography and direction Sager and his team gives us is a strong, visual nightmare, that is captivating. The acting, at times gets choppy, but for the most part the cast bring these characters to life with real emotion. On the surface they seem like 2 dimensional characters but during the course of their journey, the dimensions to these people’s individual stories get deep, dark and affective. That is why I hint to the nature of “Kingdom Come” concept, because the real gem of this film is the journey and revelation of character offered within. The situations are creative, disturbing, and relative to the underbelly of global social constructs.

The special effects and overall environment of “Kingdom Come” is that of “horror attraction” on steroids. The location, haunting nature, and dark subject matter push the “soul facing death” scenario beyond redundancy and into terrifying grounds. The antagonist and his companions are expected evil aspects that could seem cliché or transparent, but in this set-up work perfectly to really keep the story arch solid, fluid, and macabre. “Kingdom Come” is a morality tale, and the creature effects and scene designs really amp up the chilling nature of the story. The sound effects don’t really offer anything more than the ability to really solidify the macabre nature of the film, and tense atmosphere. The sounds and instrumental are what you would expect them to be in a story like this.

Overall, “Kingdom Come” is a great example of how a concept, no matter how obvious it seems, can be elevated to something entertaining. I enjoyed the basic, atmospheric effects, the characters developments and journeys, and the creature effects. The story arc is solid with real attention to getting as much substance in this film without being boring or preachy. The ending is a bit of an expected let-down, but I have never found any film that uses this concept to be surprising or “go out with a bang”. Still the journey and disturbing character journeys are what really make “Kingdom Come” a film worth watching.

Simon McKeon’s “Christmas At Dracula’s” Mixes The Golden Age Of Hollywood With Modern Anarchy

christmas at dracula'sSo production is well under way on Simon McKeon’s homage to the golden age of Hollywood’s love affair with movie monsters, “Christmas At Dracula’s”. Only based on the small amount of footage that I have scene for the indie horror/comedy, McKeon has mixed that tribulation with a modern anarchy by introducing the modern cultural monsters- maniac gangsters. The clip that I watched recently offered some fun, black satire into the story of “Christmas At Dracula’s”,  The project looks to play on  pop culture’s mixed love affair between the classic and modern era’s of cinema.

“Christmas at Dracula's” is currently filming in Cork Co. Ireland and stars Conor Dwane, Michael O Dowd, Noelle Clarke, Jonathan O'Dwyer, Jerry O Mullane, Art Kelleher, John Browne, Lorraine Comisky, Dave McGuire, Conor Slattery, Lochlainn McKenna as some of the most iconic monsters of all time. Debra Hill Documentary Announced

TheDebHillDoc

In honor of what would have been the 64th birthday of pioneering film producer Debra Hill, we are proud to announce the upcoming production of THE DEBRA HILL DOCUMENTARY.

Filmmaking team DPYX (Marcy Boyle and Rachel Holzman) will write, direct and produce THE DEBRA HILL DOCUMENTARY, a feature documentary about the late, legendary filmmaker. Lotti Pharriss Knowles of Weirdsmobile Productions will executive produce. This will be the first film about Debra Hill, and by telling her story, the filmmakers hope to preserve an important piece of the empowering history of women in Hollywood.

Said Dpyx's Marcy Boyle: “Debra Hill is a hero of ours. Not only did she break in to the industry on her own, through intelligence, talent and tenacity, but she produced so many films that have become part of popular culture."

“We want to highlight and celebrate Hill's achievements, so the next generation of filmmakers can be inspired to move forward on the path blazed by women like her -- and so the industry can be reminded that women have been instrumental in some of the greatest success stories in the film business. Debra Hill’s films have generated over a billion dollars in box office receipts,” Dpyx’s Rachel Holzman noted.

From Hill's friend and former producing partner Lynda Obst: "I am overwhelmed with emotion about the documentary being made on the life and work of Debra Hill by Dpyx (Marcy Boyle & Rachel Holzman) and executive producer Lotti Pharriss Knowles. I was lucky enough to have been her partner in Hill/Obst productions, where we joyously made movies from Adventures in Babysitting (our first), to The Fisher King (our last) -- and she taught me everything she knew. Debra was the consummate producer, and this film will show generations of women and men what the right stuff truly is, as I saw it and lived it firsthand."

"Debra Hill was the godmother of indie filmmaking. She taught me that there was no above or below the line, that we were all one crew trying to make our days and make something great," said Stacey Sher said of her producing mentor.

John Carpenter recalls, "Debra Hill was a trailblazer, a tough as nails female producer in a man's world."

Principal photography will begin January 2015. For updates and information on how to donate:
Debra Hill was born November 10, 1950 in Haddonfield, New Jersey. She began her career as a script supervisor in the 1970s, including on John Carpenter's ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13. She teamed with Carpenter on his next feature, HALLOWEEN, as his co-writer and producer. After the extraordinary success of that film, Hill became a key player in a wave of trailblazing women who broke barriers in the male-dominated film industry. She produced notable genre films such as THE FOG, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, THE DEAD ZONE and HALLOWEEN I, II & III; comedies with cult followings such as CLUE, ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING and BIG TOP PEE-WEE; and the critically-acclaimed, award-winning film THE FISHER KING. Hill was a mentor to many current film industry heavyweights, and her untimely death in 2005 at age 54 was a great loss to those who knew and loved her, and to Hollywood as a whole.

Trailer And Poster For Creature Feature “Monster-zilla”

monster zillaCheck out the trailer and poster for Tomcat Films’ creature feature “Monster-zilla”. The film is a POV shot b-movie.

Two Navy SEALS, Trevor and Doug, are sent to an abandoned island in search of a “package,” but instead of being the hunters, they find they are being hunted. During their escape they come across a camera left in the hands of a dead man. After taking refuge the two men watch what’s on the film and see the story unfold from the point of view of a young man named Garrett; taking in the fun of spring break, along with meeting Garrett’s fellow college age travelers. As the story progresses, we learn more about each of the college kids on break, and that there is a creature on the island that’s big and hungry.

Knowing they’ll have little time on the beach to gather the “package” before possibly being hunted, the Navy SEALS grab up their gear and head out to complete their assignment. Unfortunately, when they hit the beach, the one thing they hadn’t thought about actually happens. The creature has young that are now fully grown and, hunting as a pack, are now after them. A sudden twist takes place when another camera in a secret location shows that Trevor and Doug are being watched from the unseen force that sent them there in the first place. It seems that while the SEALS were watching the video of what happened to the college kids, someone else was watching the SEALS on their own video feed. Perhaps there’s a monster out there far worse than the one’s hunting them.

This still features WWE's Bryan Clark as the titular character and Alisha Seaton as Maureen, the backwoods tour guide who begrudgingly finds herself in a town she knows all too well.  Familar with the town's legend and the secrets it's trying to keep hidden, Maureen is not surprised by what she finds lurking in Cutter's Creek.  When asked why he'd release a still so soon that shows more of a character's fate than he's accustomed to, the film's writer and director Joston "El Rey" Theney replied, "I assure you, Maureen is a bit more resourceful than she seems.  You don't survive the town of Cutter's Creek and it's secrets without being a part of them."  He further elaborated, "The Axeman is not some mindless beast, killing just for the fun of it.  This town destroyed him and his life and he's exacting a gleeful, gory revenge.  Everything that's happening - they deserve it.  But he's not the only bad guy in town."

#SinningWorks in association with Blood Red Films, the production companies behind AXEMAN 2: OVERKILL, the next installment in 80’s throwback slasher franchise, have released the 2nd official film still for the sequel that promises to deliver in a new chapter in the Axeman At Cutter’s Creek saga with the goal of making it darker, grittier and bloodier than the original.

The cast includes an all new actor (WWE's Bryan Clark) in the iconic villain role of Bill “The Axeman” Talbert, as well as rising stars of film/tv including ("Teen Mom") Farrah Abraham, ("Baywatch") Angelica Bridges, ("Big Brother") Rachel Reilly, (THE FOURTH KIND) Alisha Seaton, Monique Parent, Michael Foster and many more!  The gory new installment is written and directed by Joston “El Rey” Theney.
