Pagan Festival Shout Out: Offerings To Manea

1Sunday May 11th is a time when offerings are presented to Manea, the goddess of death and insanity. She, along with Mantus, ruled the underworld. She was said to be the mother of ghosts, the undead, and other spirits of the night, as well as the Lares and the Manes. Her name links her to the Manes, Mana Genita, and Manius. This symbolic ritual works in the Lemuralia, a time when we rid our homes of malevolent forces. Giving offerings to Manea is away to receive the goddess’ favor in ridding our homes from these evil spirits, of which she is ruler.

She is called the mother of the Manes, the souls of the dead, who became her children when they descended to the Underworld. Manea is not the same goddess the Greeks paid homage to although the names are the same and both goddess’ ruled over death and madness. She was also later said to be the mother of the Lares. Her image was hung over doors to frighten away evil spirits.

Manea may be compared to Hindu 'Maya,' the Virgin Goddess whose name was "power," and Arabic 'Monat,' the Virgin Goddess whose name was "fate"and who represented the Triple Moon. In archaic Europe, Mana was the Moon-mother who gave birth to the race of man--that is of woman, which is what man originally meant.

Manea or Mana became a common name for the Great Goddess as Creatress and Queen of Heaven (moon) because it was intimately connected with the mysterious powers of women, like the moon itself. Scandinavians called the Goddess's sky-realm Manavegr, "the Moon's Way." Celts called it E-Mania, or Hy Many, the land ruled by the Triple Goddess. Sometimes it was Emain Macha, the moon-land of Mother Macha.Cormac's Glossary.

Manea was not solely a spirit of death or madness, however, in classical times. Her "moon-madness" or "lunacy" was viewed as a revelation of the divine, to be received with gratitude. Socrates said, "The greatest of our blessings comes to us through mania...Madness coming from [the deity] is superior to sanity of human origin." In other words, Mana-Manea was the Muse. Gnostics said Mana is "the divine spirit in man"; and the Great Mana, or Mana of Glory, is "the highest godhead."

As far as actual offerings to Manea today, present flowers to an image that represents Manea. Place the image and the flowers that symbolize death on the alter. Light black candles to ward off evil, burn incense that protect against malevolent forces and perform the second day rituals for Lemuralia while focusing on Manea as your guide. That is how I intend to honor the goddess of death, by incorporating her into my ritual celebration of Lemuralia. (Lilies, orchids, carnations, poppies and deadly nightshade are all flowers that symbolize death.)

My Review Of “Blood Mania”

blood mania1970’s “Blood Mania” is a sexy romp, dramatic thriller starring Peter Carpenter, Maria De Aragon, Vicki Peters, Reagan Wilson, Eric Allison, Arell Blanton and Leslie Simms that follows a sinister plot to take out the family patriarch and claim the inheritance. “Blood Mania” is directed by Robert Vincent O'Neill. The official synopsis for this film reads, “A sex-crazed nympho helps speed along her father's death so she can use the inheritance to help out her depraved boyfriend.” The film comes during a period of swinging, sexual liberation and female exploitation in cinema.

The story featured in “Blood Mania” offers the classic clash of familial confrontation and greed. It is a film idea that still maintains a strong hold in pop culture both in literature and cinema. “Blood Mania” presents and executes the concept with a soft, surreal sexiness with a sinister touch. The acting is a bit melodramatic but casual and “as is” in that the actors don’t take the characters too far and seem committed to the story line. A necessary quality considering “Blood Mania” requires an affection for drama, psychologically implications beyond what is seen on screen and acceptance of any real horror. This film falls closer to “Strait Jacket” than to “ Trip With The Teacher” when it comes to gore. It does offer skin, sex and scandal with a big-ish climax. I enjoyed watching the story unfold.

The effects and sound is basic late 60’s, early 70’s mediocre effects but from a nostalgic point-of-view, works better today than it must have to horror fans in 1970. I find films like “Blood Mania” a nice little slice of Americana, kitschy, sleaze theatre. The blood is fabulously fake but fun. It takes a dedication of sorts to get to the horror elements in the story, but the flesh and drama are just as entertaining. I liked the whole, sexy, casual vibe to psychological horror found in “Blood Mania”. It is one of the better b-movies that is worth watching.

My Review Of “SX_Tape”

1Bernard Rose’s “SX_Tape” is a paranormal, found footage film starring Caitlyn Folley, Julie Marcus, Ian Duncan, Daniel Faraldo, Diana García and Eric Neil Gutierrez. The story focuses on Adam and Jill, a young couple in the throws of a spicy, sexual relationship as it unfolds on camera. The course of the day, kinky sexcapades and subsequent horrors take shape in a blend of psychological thrills and nightmarish chills.

The story of “SX_Tape” isn’t anything new or overtly original but it is well thought out and executed nicely. In an attempt to blend the sex tape phenom into the horror story, Eric Reese develops a pretty convincing concept with some actual eerie moments. There is one aspect that fails in “SX_Tape” that is an Achilles’ heel in many of the found footage stories, the plausibility that a person will continue to maintain control over a camera or keep a strong composure in the face of such a horrific, life altering moment such as unfolds in this film. It is debatable and doesn’t really kill a story, but when it becomes a question mark for a good third of the story, it slows down the chilling nature of a major component in the film’s main gimmick. However “SX_Tape” still manages to fully present a thrilling concept with a edgy, darkness that is entertaining.

The acting in this film is believable, with most of the character driven drama hanging on one person, Jill, played by Caitlyn Folley. Her ability to emote on camera the elements of both happiness and terror is both chilling and captivating. In the beginning I felt she was more mentally challenged than I am sure she meant to portray in this free spirit, whimsical character but as the movie went on I found her really more convincing. Over all the film’s intended vision stays present and creates a chilling nightmare. “Sex_Tape” holds it’s own in the found footage, paranormal genre without being too cerebral or too mundane.  The film offers a pleasant medium of drama, thrills and suspense.

“SX_Tape” offers up a nice blend of effects both in soundtrack and effects. The horror elements are at a minimum as far as the visceral components but with the creepy sound effects, sudden shock moments and constant pace toward the inevitable “SX_Tape” gives the thrills in expected places and some not so expected places. I jumped and cringed several times in the course of watching this film. Bernard Rose gives good chills, and is worth checking out by any fan of paranormal horror, especially for the fan of this ever-growing subgenre we call found footage.

My Review Of “Velvet Vengeance”

1“Velvet Vengeance” is the feature adaptation of Jeremy Campbell’s short film of the same name. The film stars Lindsay Norman, , Paula Marcenaro Solinger, Forrest Vickery, Elisa Castillo, Cody Hofmockel and Carl “The Coach” Bailey. “Velvet Vengeance” follows Alice, who sets out to seek the killer of her brother, local legendary maniac, Dolly, still roaming the area searching for victims. The film is a blend of classic, grindhouse horror, neo-western, last-man-standing movie where heroine meets slasherette and her psycho family.

Synopsis: A young woman is faced with the tragic murder of her brother. The police swear that the murderer is dead but Alice can not shake the feeling that the killer is still alive. Against her friends and family's best wishes she travels to the location of her brothers murder to hunt the killer but little does she know that she is the one that is being hunted.

The story builds off of a strong and creative concept when stripped to the core subject matter, that of a young woman seeking resolution and justice for her brothers mother. She faces nightmare and walks through the valley of death, facing the depraved and evil that humanity can often produce. The story grows from the baser concept featured in the short film, unfortunately it is built upon with a lot of weak add-ons that mare the power of the idea in flaws. I was eager to see “Velvet Vengeance” so my expectations were a bit high but there is no lowering my hopes enough to cloud the train wreck that this feature adaptation becomes on screen. The extra elaboration of character development and added elements just tear at the core story until there is nothing recognizable of the original concept-that I could have overlooked if the script, especially the dialog would have been stronger. Everything seems to fall apart right from the beginning. My heart aches over that because the short film was great and seem to work.

The acting is what you expect from low budget indie acting. The cast, well the key cast, seem invested in the characters enough to pull off this story that throws in every genre, every aspect from nearly every classic horror film, everything plus the kitchen sink, but the dialog is weak beyond what the actors could have worked with, or built up. The scenes never really come off convincingly, I didn’t buy that these people existed even in the most exaggerated, fictional circumstances I had a hard time believing the characters. “Velvet Vengeance” does manage to give a action packed ending but it seems hurried and too little to make up for the first two acts.

When sound quality was okay, the creepy, sound effects had power and offered some spookiness to the films lukewarm atmosphere but the sound quality more often was a fail, shredding the overall experience of watching the film. The editing was messy at best. Most people are going to be disappointed or just divested in “Velvet Vengeance” pretty much within the first 15 minutes which sucks because Dolly is such a great nightmare and the story here had so much potential. On a positive note the actually soundtrack that involved song/music fricking rocked, Hex is the only real shining moment in this nightmare of a film. Again to say that is painful because my hopes were high and I was expecting to love this movie. Whoever was around the director and his team that never bothered to speak truthfully during production and editing were not friends of the director or they would have pointed out the errors, (and there are plenty), before hand.

Pagan Festival Shout Out: Lemuralia

1May 9th, 11th, 13th are the days of the Lemuralia, a Roman festival to remove evil household spirits. Rites to exorcise the malevolent and fearful ghosts of the dead are performed in the homes. The unwholesome spectres of the restless dead, the lemures or larvae were propitiated with offerings of beans. On those days, the Vestals would prepare sacred mola salsa, a salted flour cake, from the first ears of wheat of the season.

Within each home, the head of the household was to rise at midnight, wash his hands three times, and while walking barefooted around the house throw black beans behind his back and recite the following nine times: “Haec ego mitto; his redimo meque meosque fabis” meaning “I send these; with these beans I redeem me and mine”. At the conclusion of each of the nine recitations, the members of the household clashed bronze pots and required the spirits to leave.

Incorporating this ritual holiday into today, you don’t really have to toss beans over your shoulder while reciting the chant. Place the beans at the altar, light your appropriate candles and recite the chant. Toss salt, burn sage, however you normally cleanse your home from evil, on the Lemuralia perform those rituals. Plus however you normally honor your household spirits do so on these days as well, only with stronger intensity, asking them to help chase away and protect the home from the evil of malevolent spirits.

My Review Of “Blood Of Dracula’s Castle”

bodc“Blood Of Dracula’s Castle” is a 1969 film from Crown International Pictures directed by Al Adamson, and Jean Hewitt. The story takes place at the castle of Count and Countess Townsend, really Count Dracula and his wife. They lure a young women to their home for a continued blood supply. When a young man inherits the castle and appears with his young girlfriend the Count and Countess set out to chase away the couple.

The story of “Blood Of Dracula’s Castle” is a bit of a train wreck with very little true attention paid to detail as the story falls apart. John Carradine, Paula Raymond, Alexander D'Arcy, Robert Dix, Gene Otis Shayne, Jennifer Bishop and Ray Young all star in the film which gives a nice nostalgia for some of us when watching “Blood Of Dracula’s Castle” but not enough to really warrant any fan’s of Dracula’s to embrace the film completely. Dracula and his wife are practically neutered and remind me of the time the Flintstone’s met Count Dracula. The addition of Mango, and a homicidal maniac to the film should have brought with them more blood but the only red that flows in this film mostly languishes in the glasses of Count and Countess Townsend. All this makes for a dull viewing experience.

The effects and soundtrack for “Blood Of Dracula’s Castle” are also neutered in this one. For a film that claims to be exploitation horror I found no real show of exploitation save the bevvy of beauties chained to the castle wall. The deaths are almost none-existent and for the most part implied so I don’t get the exploitative aspect branded to this film. The sound is very 1969 cheap-o that screams love-me-late-night-horror-host so there is no real reason to even bother with addressing that element of “Blood Of Dracula”. Embrace this one if you wanna, I justify having it by my unending love of even crappy old movies and John Carradine. New horror fans just no that this is a 1969 Hammer film wanna be so don’t expect much of anything here.

Dramatic Turn Toward Realism And Art: A Conversation With Indie Director Mikel D Ledesma

1Mikel D Ledesma is a young indie director with a strong presence in the horror community after receiving positive feedback for his holiday horror short film “Tinsel”. The film is one of my top 10 horror shorts and a great additive for any Christmas horror play list. I first interviewed Ledesma back in 2012 while he was promoting “Tinsel” and working on a feature film  “Man On The Roof”, that project has been shelved until a later date but is still very much a project that Mikel Ledesma intends to complete.

Currently Mikel Ledesma has a full plate keeping him going these days. He is setting out for college in the Fall and is working on two short films which will move him away from the horror genre but still very much anchored in deeply intense stories. Ledesma is in the early stages of a drama that draws from the current epidemic of suicide among the youth of today. He is also developing a thriller that focuses on a rape-retribution-moral conflict, so the guy is keeping busy. I had a chat with Mikel Ledesma about these two short films as well as some other projects in various stages. You can read that interview below.

ASouthernLife: So tell me about the first short film you are working on, what is it about?
Mikel D Ledesma: The first one is something different and something I never saw myself doing. It's not a horror film. It is actually a Drama. It is titled " Losing Your Flames" The film is about Chris the popular quarterback that is in his senior year of High School. But Chris has a secret that he knows will be life changing.

While at a party Chris's girlfriend finds out that Chris is in fact gay and has a boyfriend. She ends up taking a picture of the text he received from Greg and sent it to everyone in school. Causing Chris to get kicked out of his home, and all his best friends turning against him. And bullying him leading him down a path where he questions life.

ASouthernLife: So what drew you to the story and made you focus on a a drama film? It sounds pretty intense and very modern, was there a personal connection to the story?
Mikel D Ledesma: I always wanted to do a drama that is very modern and realistic to our generation. Bullying is a big problem with our youth. Reading about kids being bullied so much that the only resource they feel they have left is taking their life upsets me. I don't understand why we can't just accept people for who they are. Not based of their Religion, Sexual Preference, Race, etc.
So I wanted to do a film where we could relate to our youth and just send a message. So I got with award winning LGB writer Sara York and we brought my story to life with her vision and creative writing. I also wanted to try something new and show people that I can do other films other than just horror films.

ASouthernLife: It is very prevalent to the world we live in today. I find it very important for active, out people in the indie community to speak up. So I love the message that you are putting out there. Has production began on "Losing Your Flame?"
Mikel D Ledesma: Absolutely, I wanted to do this for everyone who gets bullied not just gays. But suicide is more common for young adults who are Bi/Gay/Lesbian/Transgendered. We are actually is the casting stage for the film. We want to make sure we cast the film right and the actors get the right emotions for each character.

ASouthernLife: I agree totally, the suicide rate for young people is epidemic. It has become a painful reality. So when do you expect to post casting calls?
Mikel D Ledesma: We actually posted the Casting Call today. But due to the context of the film I believe this one will be a bit harder to cast. But I am just hoping we find the right talent.

ASouthernLife: Good luck on casting, I imagine it will take time to find your Chris, Greg, and Chris' girlfriend-what is her name?
Mikel D Ledesma: Lindsay is the girlfriend and she is actually already cast. Jori Gill (Tinsel) will be playing her. And Thank You I am sure we are going to need it.

ASouthernLife: So what is the second film that you are working on?
Mikel D Ledesma: The second film is also a Drama/Thriller titled "Shattered".

ASouthernLife: The title makes me think of late night noir thrillers. Is there a psychological component to the story? What is "Shattered" about?
2Mikel D Ledesma: Unfortunately, No. It is about a Mother who's daughter gets kidnapped and the kidnapper Rapes and Kills her daughter. And the Mother captures the man who shattered her life. The film is going to be a edge of your seat thriller. What I want from this film is for the audience to question what would they do if they were face to face with the man who killed their daughter.

ASouthernLife: Wow, that sounds really dark, I like it! So how is production on "Shattered" ? Have you written the script yet?
Mikel D Ledesma:  Indeed it is. It still has a horror feel to it. But I don't feel it is a horror film. The film is written. And we actually have an idea of who I want for the cast.

ASouthernLife: There is a definite moral conflict element to the story that sounds pretty edgy. So who will play this mother in crisis and who will be her antagonist?
Mikel D Ledesma: I can't say until we have them signed on. But I promise they will do a great job. And yes when I wrote this script I wrote it as if I was the parent. And at the time when I wrote it I was on vacation when a girl from Texas was raped and killed by a 17 year old. I just amazes me how we live in such a sick world. I don't understand.

ASouthernLife: Rape is another our society's horrors that I could do without. Especially in light of the military issues that plagued the news lately. The story sounds powerful and intense. So are you working on the two short films simultaneous or consecutively?
Mikel D Ledesma: They will be shot back to back. With about 1-3 weeks break. But we have a deadline to reach. I leave for school at the end of August. And I want to have a Indie Showcase in Mid August.

ASouthernLife: Best wishes and you will have to let me know when production begins and keep me up to date on the progress. Do you plan to set up a Facebook page for the films?
Mikel D Ledesma: I will indeed keep you up to date. And I am not sure if we will have social media for these films. Just depends.

ASouthernLife: So tell me, where are things out with “Man On The Roof” and “Tinsel 2”?
Mikel D Ledesma: We have shelved “MOTR” until I finish school. I want to get more experience on how to get a budget. And I didn't just want to make it just to make it. I have very high expectations for myself and my films.

And we scrapped the whole Idea of “TINSEL II”. We tried. I wrote 8 different drafts and I just felt that it was just being made to make a sequel. So we decided not to go on with it.

ASouthernLife: Sad to hear that about “Tinsel 2” but I agree with your reason for not doing a sequel just for the sake of a sequel. Great that “MOTR” is just paused and not scrapped. It is an interesting concept and the story is fresh. So where are you going to matriculate?
Mikel D Ledesma: Yes. MOTR will be made. And everyone a part of the film can't wait to get it started. It is just something I feel that is different and not the same recycled garbage we tend to get. I will be attending Santa Fe University of Art and Design.

ASouthernLife: Well congrats and good luck in school. It can only enrich your already strong talent. Thank you for the interview.

Bill Oberst Jr. Joins Cast Of “Blood Angel”

1Carl Lindbergh has announced that horror icon Bill Oberst Jr. has signed on to join the cast of “Blood Angel”. Oberst  will be playing the tortured and darkly homicidal anti-hero, Icarus! “Blood Angel” is also set to star Marshal Hilton, Arielle Brachfeld and Maria Olsen in this edgy, fever-dream tale, interweaving alternative realities, the occult and Nazi Germany.

Blood Angel” is a thriller/horror film about a time traveling Nazi scientist. Germany, early 1940's. The Nazi regime are developing "wonder weapons" to win the war. The wonder weapons range from the occult to theorized time travel. The Nazi's lose the war, but their secrets remain hidden until now.

Blood Angel has elements of a slasher film, with intense scenes of gore, but there are deeper themes in regards to time travel. Such as mortality, the meaning of life, and reconnecting with loved ones. There is the gore to satiate the horror fans, but if they want a deeper meaning to the film, the characters have emotional undercurrents to their actions.

Teaser Poster For “Fetish Factory” Revealed

Check out the teaser poster for directorial debut for Staci Layne Wilson, “Fetish Factory”. The film stars Tristan Risk, Chase Williamson, Jennifer Blanc-Biehn, Diane Goldner, Jenimay Walker, Emma Julia Jacobs, Jesse Merlin, Tom Ayers, Carrie Keagan, Ruben Pla, Morgan Peter Brown, Benjamin Easterday, and Stephen Wastell.

On a personal note: I quit watching Big Morning Buzz because they replaced Keagan with Nick Lachey. I am so glad to see that she is staying in the horror/sci-fi community. She was the only reason I watched the morning talkie anyways. (I am gay but honey I ain't that gay! Nich Lachey-as if!)

1The story centers on pin-up vixens vs. bloodthirsty zombies, and is set in post-apocalyptic Hollywood. Imagine a wickedly saucy by invitation-only stage show and posh private peeps in which your every fantasy can come true, fulfilled by the likes of luscious ladies imitating the sex goddesses of yore: Bettie Page, Jayne Mansfield, and Suzie Wong.

Along with classic burlesque strip-teases and curio acts – a ventriloquist, a magician, and a whip-dancer – you are in for the night of your life at the Fetish Factory. That is, until your life is at stake when the apocalypse strikes! Once mild-mannered men become bloodthirsty zombies and it’s up to the girls to defend themselves by any means – even if that means turning their bullet bras, garter belts and spike-heels into deadly weapons.

The patient, Sam Withers is seventy four year old man who still suffers from a lobotomy he had received in 1968 at the hands of Doctor Terrance Stephens at the Stephens Sanitarium. Upon Sam’s arrival things begin to unravel. Odd noises, and strange visions begin to haunt the patients as well as doctors there. When things begin to turn violent, William must struggle to find out what happened there forty years ago before he, as well as everyone else succumbs to madness.
