My Review Of "Dead House"

From Wild Eye Releasing, "Dead House" is directed by Amerigo Brini. It stars Danny Cutler,  Alex Lucchesi and Alex Southern. The film is a dark, brutal assault that brings all the horror, psychological - visceral - intense horror from start to finish.

A group of thieves have the tables turned on them during a home invasion. Hidden in the basement they find the remains of secret viral lab experiments gone savagely wrong. Now they must escape before they are infected with a new strain of virus that turns its victims into mutated psychopaths.

The story is modern melding of genre shock horror and classic giallo that works almost always when told by Eurocentric storytellers. It brings in the darkest natures of man on multiple level, cruelty and dark sinister intent. In this case the nature of nightmare science unchecked. A really good mix of two common concepts told with originality. Reminds me of 2010's Devil's Playground with a heavy dose of "Hate Crime" thrown in.

The special effects are awesome and filled with gore. Practical techniques dominate the visceral, bloody death scenes in giallo goodness. Creature design and makeup equal any found on The Walking Dead but stay within indie purity- modest, proud zombies and creature styles done without being overdone or digitally enhanced post production.

Overall "Dead House" offers a good time for horror fans. Organic upscale indie performances rich in dark, intense scenes. Violent, practical gory moments. Plenty of energy and horror from the beginning right up to the very end. (4/5)

My Review Of "Inferno: Skyscraper Escape"

Action Disaster flick "Inferno : Skyscraper Escape" is directed Eric Summer and stars Claire ForlaniJamie BamberRiley JacksonIsaac Rouseand Nigel Barber. The film blends drama, disaster and heart centering around a family both in personal crisis and physical danger with basic cable - microbudget special  effects.

Disaster strikes a downtown skyscraper when a gas leak causes a ferocious explosion setting ablaze the towering mass of metal and glass. On the 20th floor Brianna and Tom, a couple in the middle of a divorce settlement, are forced to work together to help save their two children, Anne and Ben, who are both trapped in the building’s elevator hovering 20 stories above ground. Together Brianna and Tom must fight to stay alive while teaming up to save their children and escape the towering inferno.

The story lacks originality and follows well established tropes with villainous corporate types, wholesome archetypes and just-add-wickedness mayhem. A real Syfy ready summer flick.  The one positive and strong exception to this slightly mundane premise is the female lead of Supergirl/Wonder Woman heroine-ness of Claire Forlani'mother/professional character. Sadly the miss use of Jamie Bamber was a obvious disappointment, to equal Forlani.

The special effects are the typical display of scaled-down practical tricks that one expects from this level of disaster movie blended with lower budgeted CGI effects. This doesn't mean that the film is bad or cheap,  just didn't want to equate "Inferno: Skyscraper Escape" to the Syfy channel, but yeah this one would work beautifully on their lineup. The effect have ample quality and impact with only a mild drop in CGI quality.

Overall the movie gives a straight-to-Redbox,  low budget performance that works as far as action entertainment value for fans of microbudget disaster/action flicks. There is a strong female lead that plays to the heart of the story. There is some superbad acting and some melodrama that falls flat but for what it is,  "Inferno: Skyscraper Escape" is a decent flick that should satisfy fans of this type film. (2.5/5)

But while Uncle Jonathan practiced funny and comfortable white magic, the original owner of the old house, Isaac Izard, had been an evil sorcerer. Isaac Izard had devised a plan for bringing about the end of the world. Somewhere in the walls of the house he had hidden a clock. Every night Lewis and Uncle Jonathan could hear it ticking — sometimes loud, sometimes soft — marking off the minutes until doomsday.

Lewis knew they had to find the clock before it was too late. Then he decided to dabble in a little magic of his own, and their time almost ran out.

30th Anniversary Reunion Screening Of "They Live"

HOLLYWOOD HORRORFEST (HHF) is honoring the genius of filmmaker John Carpenter with a special They Live 30th birthday bash, a fundraising benefit for the Vincent Price Art Museum (VPAM), Friday, July 27 at Mayflower Club in North Hollywood, California.

The world’s only 30th anniversary reunion screening and live concert for Carpenter’s beloved and timely 1988 thriller will kick off with electronic music legend Alan Howarth receiving the IMPACT Award, followed by a live musical concert of Carpenter classics They Live, Halloween, Big Trouble in Little China and Escape from New York.

"The blues score from They Live is now used as an iconic representation of modern Los Angeles,” said Howarth. "With the film, John Carpenter eerily and accurately predicted the cardboard cities that are now downtown.”

Howarth is the second-ever recipient of the festival’s prestigious IMPACT Award (previously awarded to actor Dick Miller), given in recognition of a body of work that’s positively impacted the horror genre. His work as a composer and sound designer includes such classics as Poltergeist, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Hunt for Red October, Coppola’s Dracula, Total Recall and Stargate.

"I'm honored to be getting the award from Hollywood Horrorfest; I’ve got a body of work going back 40 years, including my work with John as well as being sound designer on Star Trek 1 thru 6,” said Howarth, who is currently available for media interviews. “Thirty years ago, I never thought we'd still be playing this music and it's a thrill to do it today.”

They Live will screen immediately following the concert, as well as a Q&A with Howarth, actor Peter Jason (who plays the leader of the resistance) and several other very special guests (TBA), moderated by horror journalist Pat Jankiewicz.

“As word gets around we find more guests want to be part of this amazing celebration,” said HHF Director Miles Flanagan. “Be prepared for some very special announcements in the coming weeks.”

The fundraiser will feature They Live-themed raffles, with special prizes courtesy of 8BitZombie.com and Trick or Treat Studios, which include deluxe They Live rubber masks, Hoffmann Lenses, They Live stickers & bubble gum and ultra-cool shades; the party will include a live DJ spinning Carpenter/Howarth classics, cosplayers, photo ops, horror memorabilia vendors, food & snacks and a full bar.

“Believe it or not, this is the world's only They Live 30th Anniversary Event, so miss it at your peril,” said Flanagan. “We’ve put a lot of love into this event as They Live deserves a big birthday bash; its fan base just keeps on growing, as does the film’s relevancy. It’s just such a unique film.

Flanagan added that “it’s hard to have a fun event like this in a cinema, so we decided to find a more theatrical venue - one that accommodates a live concert, film screening, vendors and a bar for socializing, all in one great space. The only downside is that seating is very limited for this exclusive evening, so I definitely recommend getting your tickets early. Dress accordingly, wear sunglasses after dark… and don’t forget your bubblegum.”

The Mayflower Club is located at 11110 Victory Boulevard, N. Hollywood, CA 91606. Doors open 6.00pm and tickets are available at https://theylive30brownpapertickets.com. Tickets are very limited; once they sell out online there will be none available at the door.
