Pagan Festival Shout Out: Armilustrium

In ancient Roman religion, the Armilustrium was a festival in honor of Mars, the god of war, celebrated on October 19. On this day the weapons of the soldiers were ritually purified and stored for winter. The army would be assembled and reviewed in the Circus Maximus, garlanded with flowers.

During the festival the Romans held a special sacrifice ritual around the October Horse. It is the only time in ancient Rome that horses were sacrificial. I don't do animal sacrifice, but then again I don't practical actual ritual service beyond my personal altar to acknowledge the gods on their special day and a ceremonial fire during solstice, equinox times.

ANTRUM (Thursday 11/14 9:30 PM)

Else Films has successfully tracked down a sole copy of the film for public release. This is that film.

My Review Of "Killer Sofa"

"Killer Sofa" is a indie possession horror with a unique concept- the malevolent animation of an inanimate object. The film is directed by Bernardo Rao and stars Jed Brophy (The Hobbit), Sarah Munn, Stacy King, and Harley Neville. The New Zealand horror story with a creative mix subdued satire and diabolical forces.

Francesca always attracted weirdos. When one of her stalkers is found dead, she looks for comfort from her best friend, Maxi. Meanwhile, Maxi’s grandfather, Jack, a disgraced Rabbi, comes across a reclining chair containing a Dybbuk inside. Jack and his voodoo sorceress partner try to find out where the recliner has been delivered while exploring Jack’s newfound gift for communicating with the other world. Meanwhile the reclining chair becomes enchanted by Francesca and starts committing crimes of passion.

Let's get the ridiculousness of the principal concept of the movie out of the way before I move on. It is a movie about a possessed recliner. Now let it digest, and settle. Still give the film a chance. This is so much more than the obvious set-up suggests and despite the clear desire to pass this film off as silly there is a real, straight forward horror story taking place. One closer to "Evil Dead" than "Evil Bong".

First, the story standard horror affair. Elements of the occult, evil spirits, Jewish mysticism, and unfortunate victims of happenstance. My only outlying irritation is with the one of cultural differences, the film says "killer Sofa" when clearly it is a recliner. Now, for the most part "Killer Sofa" is fun, entertaining, and atmospherically rich with classic horror imagery.

The acting is quality. The cast, being very clear on the story's material and the director's intent, fully commit to these characters. The dialog and general writing is hit-and-miss. Some moments lose momentum but mostly the film offers entertaining, nostalgic horror movie moments that make you forget that, for the most part, this is a movie about a killer "couch".

The cinematography and lighting choices are cotton candy horror magic. Very riminescent of "Tales From The Crypt" and Italian giallo. The scene structure and atmosphere really elevate "Killer Sofa" to a level that steps beyond the usual material similar to this, mostly Charles Band and Full Moon Horror stuff. Plus this film at its core is a serious dybbuk possession film with only the slightest bit of satire.

Overall I enjoyed "Killer Sofa" far more than I expected to, and on a level that went deeper than the superficial. Yes, you have to settle any reservations about taking a film about a killer sofa. Once you allow yourself to get into it, the movie becomes fun, quality horror that celebrates the classic horror fantastical notions that somehow struggle to find a home in today's "love of realism" home invasion, torture porn world. I think this film is worth checking out. (3/5)

Pagan Festival Shout Out: Divine Spirit Ameretat

Zoroastrian celebration of Divine Spirit Ameretat (Immortality), creator and protector of vegetation. [a/k/a Ayathrima, Herds-Homecoming] [Fasli calendar]

Ameretat is the Avestan language name of the Zoroastrian divinity/divine concept of immortality. Ameretat is the Amesha Spenta of long life on earth and perpetuality in the hereafter.

Ameretat is very closely allied to Haurvatat, who was the goddess of Water, Prosperity/Wholeness, and Health. Zoroaster, the prophet of Zoroastrianism, had stated “both Wholeness and Immortality are for sustenance” in the kingdom of Ahura Mazda.

Ameretat has a counterpart like most deities in Zoroastrianism, who is the Daeva, Shud. Both Ameretat and Haurvatat represent the reward of the righteous after death .

Ameretat along with 5 other Amesha Spentas, took part in creation.

Bill Moseley And Bill Oberst, Jr Head To "Devil’s Junction" This October

This October “It simply doesn’t get much better than the two Bills” (Pop Horror) as horror icons Bill Moseley (The Devil’s Rejects) and Bill Oberst, Jr (3 from Hell) team for director Jeff Broadstreet’s “Jolly” bloody horror epic Devil’s Junction : Handy Dandy’s Revenge.

In L.A theaters for special splattastic screenings 10/18 and 10/19, with an On Demand and DVD release set for 11/5 from Midnight Releasing, the J.S Brinkley-scripted Halloween treat sees a shuttered TV studio in Detroit haunted by a magician ventriloquist from a 1960's children's show, and he's looking for anew live, or dead, studio audience.

Jeff Broadstreet (Night of the Living Dead 3D) directs genre vets Bill Moseley (Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects, 3 From Hell) and Bill Oberst, Jr. (3 From Hell, Death House) alongside Jake Red, Cody Cameron, Arthur Marroquin, Danni Spring, Kyle Anderson and Katelynn Newberry. Don Borza produces.

Returning to the abandoned Detroit television station where they once delighted a generation of children viewers, master puppeteer Mister Jolly re-incarnates his minion puppets for a final performance to settle an old score with Richard. The rare blood moon casts an ominous glow as Mr Jolly unleashes his puppets, lead by the infamous Handy Dandy to seek his revenge. Further complicating Richard’s dilemma is the unexpected arrival to the Studio of his son Steffen and his friends. The group become entangled in the thrilling pursuit by Mr Jolly and Handy Dandy through the annuls of the old studio building. They soon realize that they are in a new version of “Mister Jolly and the Handy Dandy Show” -where pain is the game!

My Review Of "The Baylock Residence"

"The Baylock Residence" is a traditional ghost story, classic and gothic in nature. It is written and directed by Anthony M. Winson. The film stars Kelly Goudie, Sarah Wynne Kordas and Lindsay Foster.

After the death of her sister, Patricia inherits her family’s estate and soon discovers that something or someone has been haunting the home for decades and harbors a disturbing family secret that she must uncover.

The story is the classic gothic ghost story with an almost longing reminisce of the past and lost bygones. "The Baylock Residence" stays within a refined, romantic style of storytelling where showing a past history, even one that is dark, means more than the shock value of modern paranormal horror. It is a neat, subdued thriller with more melodrama and theatric characters with tone-down horror elements.

The acting is pretty decent, it never reaches the fully developed attributes that make you truly feel these characters, but the actors know there lines and understand the material. I did feel the film lacked the atmospheric authenticity to make me really feel like I was lost in the time period. However, structurally, everything seemed to represent the time period "The Baylock Residence" is set.

The cinematography is done nicely. It is straightforward, unexaggerated third person point-of-view. It stays pretty traditional. Honestly I felt this movie plays well in a Masterpiece Theatre, made-for-TV market. The horror is very mild, "The Baylock Residence" features the expected gimmicks and CGI tricks one would expect from stuff like 'The Ghost Whisperer'. Overall the movie won't appeal to the "Insidious" crowd but if you like period melodrama with a spooky edge then check it out. (3/5)
