My Review Of “Provoked” 2013

provoked“Provoked” is a film that I have followed from the beginning so I am thrilled to finally get to see the film completed. It follows a group of paranormal researchers following the path of their favorite TV paranormal team, M.A.P.S. On one assignment unfortunately one of the investigators brings something home that proves fatal. “Provoked” is the first feature film of Jordan Pacheco and stars Tony Moran, Christopher P. O'Reilly, Nicole Lasala, Dan Liebman, Jami Tennille, Sean Carmichael, Kati Salowsky, Camille Farnan, Michaelah Noelle Nunes, Charles Everett Tacker and Jeanne Lohnes .

The story explored in “Provoked” is very tradition and doesn’t stray far from paranormal lore which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it trapped the film in a “sleeper” mode for a great deal of the film. The acting and character depths in the film were believable and strong enough but the actual interactions and honest ability to connect on screen fell a bit flat at times. That being said “Provoked” does draw you into the story and offers a serious, chilling atmosphere that screams “haunting”. And that “sleeper” feel of the first part of the film does more to disarm you just enough for the thrilling height of action, which throws, claws, and drags you right to the exciting, and intense climax-and man is it thrilling. This is a story that builds calmly, steadily right up until all Hell breaks loose.

“Provoked” uses some pretty standard effects to bring the paranormal aspects to life in the film, they are mild for the most part and a little too expected. That doesn’t really hurt the over all production of “Provoked”, I merely mention it so that fans of this subgenre who may be seeking big amounts of falderal will be prepared when viewing this movie. Now the real joy for horror, and effects fans comes at the last third of this film-right along with the excitement and chills. There are some pretty creepy and thrilling moments. And I love an ending that isn’t all “Hallmarky”. The film is definitely worth seeing because it holds to the more mature, classic love of the genre, with a steady paranormal story, and a very modern nightmare ending. I feel “Provoked” will please any paranormal fan.

New Swedish Experimental Horror “Creature 2013”

Check out the promo art  below for Swedish experimental horror/drama “Creature 2013”. The film is directed by Ronny Carlsson and stars Daniela Melin. Carlsson just finished production on “Creature 2013”.  Read more about the film below and check back for my review of the film coming soon. “Creature 2013” will be released on DVD later this year/early next year together with the spiritual partner-in-technology GOODBYE, LITTLE BETTY.

“Creature 2013” tells of Natalya's desperation to seek answers from her past. By traveling back to a place she recalls as secure, the memories come out of the darkness with the sole purpose of yet again destroying her life.

creature2013The film comes from Film Bizarro Productions and is an episodic clash of generations. Made by simple, modern means of technology but enhanced with the style of the glorious horror heyday, it's a slowly pounding and personal arthouse film but with a strong horror undertone. Told like an episodic memory, we're right by Natalya's side as she ventures into disillusion and the terror of a past life long repressed.

“Creature 2013” is 44 minute experimental horror/drama written, directed and produced by Ronny Carlsson (RÉCOMPENCE, DUST BOX, etc.), starring Daniela Melin (together they also made GOODBYE, LITTLE BETTY earlier this year). Special effects by Ronny Carlsson, with help from Michael Todd Schneider (HIS DEVIL'S NIGHT, AUGUST UNDERGROUND'S MORDUM, THE PROFANE EXHIBIT), who also helped with the finishing editing touches. Co-produced by Vincent Trocki. Featuring music by Müldeponie and Olegh Kolyada.

Trailer For Shakespear Revision Film “Cymbeline”

“Cymbeline” is a very modern retelling of William Shakespear’s most celebrated play. The film is directed by Michael Almereyda and stars Ed Harris, Ethan Hawke, Milla Jovovich, Dakota Johnson, John Leguizamo, Anton Yelchin, Penn Badgley. There is no word on North American release as of yet but I am definitely intrigued to see this spin on the classic tale.

Based on William Shakespeare’s timeless play, the story unfolds as an epic battle between dirty cops and a drug dealing biker gang set in a corruption-riddled 21st century America.

My Review Of “Beyond The Grave”

beyond the grave
Occasionally I get the privilege of coming across a film and director the revitalizes my love of Indie cinema. “Beyond The Grave” is such a film and Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro is that director. The film is a beautiful fusion arthouse action thrill ride with just the right mix of character exaggeration, melodrama, effects and story that totally flips a subgenre’s often redundant script. “Beyond The Grave” follows a vengeful police officer, “Officer”, who searches for a possessed serial killer in a battle of the not-so-good versus absolute evil, in a devastated post-apocalyptic world where the rules of reality are transformed by magic and madness. The film stars Rafael Tombini, Álvaro Rosa Costa, Ricardo Seffner, Amanda Lerias, Luciana Verch and Leandro Lefa.

The story takes an almost graphic novel’s approach to creativity with the characters almost over-the-top, stoic personalities, a back drop of earthly chaotic badlands and plenty of adventurous bravado. Normally the subject matter explored in “Beyond The Grave” would come across as “been there-done that” however the visional brilliance of de Oliveira Pinheiro’s way of telling the story makes everything seem fun and fresh. There are elements of Sergio Leone, Tarantino and Hong Kong influences within “Beyond The Grave”, that are more atmospheric nods to other’s in this subgenre of action/horror, but de Oliveira Pinheiro brings so much originality to this film that his unique talent cannot be denied. “Beyond The Grave” is just one of those films I feel in love with the minute I hit play! I am calling it neo-western/bairro.

The effects, style and soundtrack utilized in “Beyond The Grave” bring some lighter, black comedy and humor to the story that allows de Oliveira Pinheiro to tell such a strong, brutal tale of unforgiving life/death/hell in “Beyond The Grave” that otherwise would have been too intense for the average viewer. It all just comes together as some live action, thrill kill wasteland, graphic novel piece of awesome. The film is subtitled for English viewers so be warned if you go to watch the film (I personally love subtitles over voiceovers). “Beyond The Grave” really is a fun, off-beat, arthouse film that showcases a true talent with Davi de Oliveira Pinheiro. This is cult cinema at it’s future best and will go on to become a classic cult film-I just feel it with this film. Can’t wait to see what else de Oliveira Pinheiro has in store.

My Review Of “Dead Walkers: Rise Of The 4th Reich”

Dead Walkers
“Dead Walkers: Rise Of The 4th Reich” does little to raise any chills much less something as chilling as a new Nazi Reich. The film is directed by Philip Gardiner who also wrote the story and stars Philip Berzamanis, Jane Haslehurst, Bob Lee, Nathan Head in what is suppose to be a thriller/action gorefest. The film doesn’t deliver on any of the intended vision the director was aiming for with this film. The story focuses on “Alpha One” played by Berzamanis who is forced into therapy to deal with a recent mission that entails a Nazi conspiracy and the occult. A powerful and destructive 4th Reich is being formed in “Dead Walkers”. An army of hell is coming. Only one man knows the truth. His mission now, is to convince the world. Based on years of occult research and insider knowledge.

The story has a pretty cool and interesting subject and the possibility was definitely there for “Dead Walkers” to be a pretty cool indie action gore flick. The only problem is the execution was a big fail. The visual high concept spectacle that invaded every action scene devoured the film and killed the moment. It was as if every gimmick learned in film school was thrown in just for the hell of it. Dial it back and build a great dialog based story that not only uses the reflective but also the active dialog between characters. Butting the whole of your dramatic aspects and humanistic points on a weak reflective conversation between two not-so-good actors is never wise. Combine that with the constant over-the-top tricks and industrial-rock video like effects that present in a MPD overload and “Dead Walkers: Rise Of The 4th Reich” does little to raise anything at all -entertainment value included.

philip berzamanis
The upsides, and they are little, in “Dead Walkers” is the surreal, nightmare PTSD dream sequences and flashback scenes with some pretty cool, gore mania come together nicely. That should have been the crux of the visual artistry in this film to frame the action and the dramatic story. Unfortunately with all the other effects happening in the cinematography, these flashback/nightmare moments got lost in my irritation. Actually, the only other good highlight in this film was Philip Barzamanis’ body-I give that a higher review than I do this film. I am adding a pic of that just for the hell of it!

Curse Of The Lava Dead In “Volcano Zombies”

volcanozombiesDanny Trejo takes on lava-filled zombies in “Volcano Zombies”. A lot of films just continue the almost redundant concept of the living dead only changing locations and actors. So you have to give props to any film that comes along and offers a genuinely original concept for the horror subgenre. So kudos Jeff Miller and Jason Ancona who wrote the screenplay for this one. “Volcano Zombies” is directed by Rene Perez and co-stars Tom Downey, Moniqua Plante, Robert F. Lyons, Nicole Cummins, Kevin Norman, Julia Lehman, Kyle T. Heffner, Tom Nagel, Adam Gregor, Jenny Lin, Morgan Lester.

Pagan Festival Shout Out: Feast Of Ullr

Ullr
On Nov 27th is the pagan Feast Of Ullr, which is my primary focus for Thanksgiving this year. I am relatively new in paganism “in practice”. Paganism in general has always been a natural concept for me. The Feast Of Ullr is to honor our Gods and Goddesses of the hunt (it is deer hunting season in many parts of the country). We thank them for a successful hunting season blessings as well as honor those who hunt to support the family. Of course now days most of us hunt for our food in the supermarket and at this time of year it can be just as dangerous and challenging with all the other crazed “hunters” fighting for that deal. You can also utilize this day to honor familial ancestors.

So who was Ullr? He is  a major god, or an epithet of an important god dating back to prehistoric times. So old that by the time the Iron Age Norse myths were written down, not much more was known about him except that he was a god of archery, hunting, and the winter. He was shown frequently with skates or skis on his feet, and because of this he has been hailed as the modern God of Skiing. One story talks about him "crossing water on a magic bone", alluding to crossing the frozen ice on skates. He was also called God of the Shield, and the shield was referred to as his "ship", which may be a reference to using a shield or shield-shaped board as a sled … or to the ice of winter enveloping the world like a shield.

Ullr's name comes from wuldor, an Old High German word meaning "glory". It was pronounced "Ool" in ancient times, but today is generally pronounced "Ooler". The Anglo-Saxons called him Vulder; in some places in Germany he was known as Holler and said to be the husband of the Germanic goddess Holda. Some modern Pagans feel that he eventually took up with Skadi, the winter goddess and huntress, after she left her first husband Njord.

Spanish Slasher “Ferro”

cache_5594861Check out some cool stills from slasher “Ferro”. The film is directed by Mani Guerrero and stars Francisco Sevilla, Enrique Martín, Borja Conesa and Cristina Bernal. With a lot of horror attention focusing on the undead and other torture styled concepts it it refreshing to see the slasher killer still very much thriving. “Ferro” comes from Spanish indie film company Espantapajaros Films. There is no release date yet but I am sure that it won’t be long before we here more from this film.

“Ferro” follows a psychopath killer who tortures and inflicts suffering upon the wealthy establishment. He sets out to punish inscrutably the elitist arrogance of the wealthy with brutality, as they become his prey.

My Review Of “I Am No One”

I am no one“I Am No One” is a fictionalized documentary following a moment in the life of a young serial killer. The “mockumentary” indie flick is directed by Jason Hoover. "I Am No One" follows Charles Lake as he details his darker side. Opening up to the cameras Lake allows the viewer to walk with him as he stalks and kills his prey. This is an extended look at the film which originally debuted as a short in “The Collective VOL. 6” other the same title.

The story has a very organic believable quality for the most part. At times, I times I did feel there where some “not so believable moments” in the portrayal of Charles Lake but not enough to make this film seem hokey. The atmosphere and chilling subject matter hooks you into the very personal nature of the killer’s story. There are some pretty powerful moments in “I Am No One” that can’t be ignored. Much as most documentary styled films tend to be, this one also has some lull time in the film which loose your attention but it never really flatlines nor does it completely disappoint. It is a chilling and gripping vision that Hoover executes nicely. As I said in my short review of this story - the really cool part of the film is the notion that people like this really are roaming around our society with this very outlook on life playing “red rover” in their psyches.

The visual and special effects attention given in “I Am No One” is really a star personality to be noted. It looked, at times, a bit too real! Especially the bathtub scene! Great special effects on that part. Over all this is a top notch effort from Jason Hoover and does indie horror and film proud. I suggest that anyone who is into the serial killer genre and indie horror check out “I Am No One”. The flow is up and down a tad bit but the energy and atmosphere never really falter so the film is captivating. It is chilling and intense with a pretty unique vision.

Check Out The First Theatrical Trailer For “Raze”

razeThe first theatrical trailer has been released for indie action-horror “Raze” . The fightest thriller is directed by Josh C. Waller and has been doing some steady, cool promo for the past two years, not to mention a strong festival run. I am super excited to see the time is edging closer more a major release for this “testrogen” (I made that up. Think of it as testosterone driven overload as mimicked by estrogen)  rager. “Raze” stars Zoë Bell, Rachel Nichols, Doug Jones, Sherilyn Fenn, Tracie Thoms and Bailey Borders.

Stuntwoman-turned-action-star Zoe Bell (Death Proof) headlines this sly subversion of the women-in-prison genre. When Sabrina is mysteriously abducted, she finds herself in an underground lair, forced to do battle with other innocents for the amusement of unseen spectators. Each of these reluctant warriors has something to lose, but only one will remain when the game is done. Violent and relentless, Raze takes its video game aesthetic to the deepest and darkest places, rarely surfacing for air.

Quad Poster For “Big Bad Wolves”

I have to say that I ma super excited about Aharon Keshales’ “Big Bad Wolves”. You may remember his earlier work of awesomeness along with the talented Navot Papushado  – “Rabid”. Now the duo is once more creating some pretty impressive waves in the horror community with their new project which has Quentin Tarantino raving for the team’s talent.  “Big Bad Wolves” stars Tzachi Grad, Lior Ashkenazi, Dov Glickman, and Rotem Keinan.

A series of brutal murders puts the lives of three men on a collision course: The father of the latest victim now out for revenge, a vigilante police detective operating outside the boundaries of law, and the main suspect in the killings – a religious studies teacher arrested and released due to a police blunder.

In an email Carter told me that “TORN: A SHOCKYoumentary” is in post-production and will be hitting the festival circuit early 2014. He went on to state, “I think we have a really strong picture on our hands, with a scale and ambition which truly defies our most limited of budgets. If you go down to the woods today.... Has a supernatural evil come to terrorize the rural Devon village of Orchardlea?
