My Review Of “Carrie” 2013

carrie
“Carrie” 2013, the film that almost was awesome. Yeah I know that goes against the box office numbers and most cynical movie reviewers but “Carrie” was a pretty solid, emotion driven thriller. Closer to the short story written by Stephen King, this updated vision of the coming of age nightmare pays tribute to the 1976 while modernizing the characters to relate to 21st century horror fans. I think I like this version better than the original film. I didn’t feel bored or frustrated while waiting for the story to explode into blood soaked chaos begging for the fire.

The story is about Carrie White, a young girl who is about to enter womanhood. Unfortunately she is the psychologically neglected daughter of a bible-beating nut-job. Bullied at school by some very cruel classmates, Carrie transforms into a force of supernatural vengeance on a path to self destruction. It is a timeless and poignant tale that is very familiar. This film isn’t the first redo for the “Carrie” story but in my opinion it is by far the best.

Although the film is predictable to anyone who has spent countless seasons watching the classic film, or re-reading the story by Mr. King,  ChloĆ« Grace Moretz portrays the telekinetic school girl with more charm and depth. Sissy Spacek  offers a more vulnerable, sorrowful Carrie and I enjoy her version immensely. I just feel that Moretz interpretation is more attuned to that outcast, sheltered, mentally scared character. I felt invested enough to stay connected through the parts of the film that almost seemed redundant and too close to the 1976 film.

The film moves in that same somber slow atmospheric realm of depressed soul  as the original and the characters are critically close to being two dimensional but the depth and breadth of Kimberly Pierce’s vision of “Carrie” offers so much more substance to the story on screen that it carries the characters from scene to scene. However disappointing the lack of personality the characters seem to have in the first half of the film second and last act the energy and chilling vitality begins to shine through elevating “Carrie” into a more visceral, macabre film. The characters become more affective and viable, especially in the last act when things really start moving.

Visually it all boils down to the effects and dark realization of Carrie’s breakdown into an uncontrollable storm of death and destruction. Pierce offers more detail to the personal “growth” of Carrie and more celebration of the carnage the ensues. I enjoyed this film and believe that it deserves far more love from horror fans than it has been given.

My Review Of “You’re Next”

you're nextAdam Wingard directed “You’re Next” is a modern visceral horror the delivers both the nod to classic genre filmmaking and contemporary storytelling. The film stars Sharni Vinson, Joe Swanberg, AJ Bowen, Nicholas Tucci, Wendy Glenn, Margaret Laney, Ti West, Amy Seimetz, Rob Moran, Barbara Crampton, L.C. Holt, Simon Barrett and Lane Hughes.  Yeah I know I named pretty much every one in the film but they all really do deserve a nod because there wasn’t a weak character in the film. Plus the characters gave such good death that I have to acknowledge them all. “You’re Next” stays with a pretty simple scheme of home invasion/violent attack that has become common over the past decade of horror films of this nature. The big difference between this film and a lot of the others is the brilliant blend of 70’s/80’s nostalgia with a truly 21st century spin.

“You’re Next” is about a wealthy family that gathers at a weekend home in the country on the parent’s 35th wedding anniversary. Upon the big night when everyone has arrived and sat down to dinner they are attacked by masked assailants with extreme brutality. The story is tight and unwinds smoothly allowing for an intense thrill ride. At first I thought it was going to be one of those slow building horror film’s that ends in one twisted, violent displays of violence but “You’re Next” keeps a pretty chilling, steady pace of non-stop suspense that had me on edge. I have never enjoyed cursing at the people on the screen as I did with this film. I never really noticed any moments where the story became stagnant. Even after the mid-film reveal as to the plot I still found the remaining section of “You’re Next” just as thrilling as the first half.

As for the special effects and soundtrack of “You’re Next”, I found them equally entertaining and quite strong for an indie horror film. The gore and violent action scenes were strong and bloody. I cringed at how the kill sequence would play out and yet I couldn’t wait to see it happen. The violence wasn’t over-the-top or gratuitous-at least not for my taste. The film actually gave me the same level of pleasure I get from the classic horror films like “The Burning” and the original “I Spit On Your Grave”. The soundtrack plays out with perfect resonance to the films almost somber atmosphere and violent nature. The sound effects created a wonderful homage to the VHS horror days that helped frame “You’re Next” as a truly nightmarish and modern urban apologue. “You’re Next” is a real present-day standard in horror.

“Death Walks” Film Completion Details

death walks_thumb[1]In June 2013 Brentwood based Spencer Hawken announced his intention to create a zero budget horror movie, the movie would not have a cheap look and feel, and would break all the rules when it came to zombie movies. When work began Spencer had no names to attach to his picture, by completion he had several.

“Death Walks” is based in an East London shopping centre, on the night of a massive street party strange things begin to happen at the centre. Firstly an Italian woman arrives called Lucrezia (Cannibal Holocaust’s Francesca Ciardi) who promises that everyone is going to die. Her visit is followed by the arrival of Poppy (Tracy Beaker star Jessie Williams), from here the 25 people left in the centre are subjected to a night of terror.

“When we began filming it was an ambitious project” says Spencer Hawken “But as time went on it became more ambitious, I was able to bring a horror legend in the form of Francesca Ciardi back to the movie industry, after many big directors tried and failed. Then I secured Jessie Williams who you can find on the BBC each and every day with shows Tracy Beaker and The Dumping Ground. Then Lucinda Rhodes (Dream Team, Fall Of The Essex Boys, Cavegirl), Joanna Finata (Rush) and a scattering of other names came aboard. By the time final shooting came, I was having to sadly turn a number of big names from British television away.”

“Death Walks” ran on considerably longer than expected, it was originally due to be shot over a period of 24 hours. Instead it filmed from 15th of July to the 17th of November, but Hawken claims the look is now better. The achievement for Death Walks is that it never cost a single penny to make, everything including insurance was given free of charge, or obtained on a contra basis.

“It’s been a strange few months, first we shot a film for absolutely no cost thanks to the generosity of Romford’s Mercury Mall, then we acquired a cast of legends in their own arena’s, and finally a supporting cast and crew of almost 1000 who came back week after week for no cost to complete the task. During the process I was awarded funding for future projects, found work for many of out team, created a partnership with Lucinda Rhodes which already has two movies under it’s belt, three in pre-production and two currently doing the rounds for funding.”

Editing has now began on “Death Walks”, but no sooner has the film wrapped than the movie is about to become a franchise, Spencer is in serious talks to make Death Walks 2, and several of the cast are keen to reprise their roles. He promises the story will be a million light years from Death Walks “If you make a zombie movie, you have to be different, people will be both impressed and annoyed by Death Walks, but all will undoubtedly agree there has NEVER been a movie like “Death Walks”, hence how I was able to bring current and legendary talent aboard.”

“Death Walks” is due to complete editing in February in time for submission to the global festival circuit.
Spencer Hawken and Lucinda Rhodes begin work on “No Reasons” next week, Road Rage in the Spring, and Godfathers Of London in the Summer. Distribution for “Death Walks” is still a big question mark, but the film is planning a festival run thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign.

“Autumn Moon” Puts The Horror Back In The Werewolf

autumn moonFew films recently have adhered to the classic horrifying look of the 80’s styled werewolf made popular in “The Howling” films and later in “Dog Soldiers”. A lot of films choose the shape-shifter ‘wolf’ concept or wolf mutant hybrid. And then there are those who CGI it all until the wolf is more cartoonish and far from scary. Well Skylar Phoenix Productions is putting the horror back in the werewolf with their new film “Autumn Moon”. Check out the intensely terrifying look of the werewolf and special effects to be utilized in the film.

The werewolf make-up effects will be created by Fabert’s Makeup EFX Studio.  The Director of Photography is Terrance Huff and Philip Jones will be handling the film’s sound design. Fabert stated to Horror Society that he hopes “Autumn Moon” will be “the most violent werewolf movie ever made.” He went own to say that “[the film]will not feature the same cheesy CGI werewolves that you have come to expect from other werewolf films of late, this will be an old school monster movie where the beast is an actor in a werewolf suit.”

Also I should note that Horror Society mentions that a promo video will be ready that will show the opening werewolf attack scene later that will be used on with a crowd funding campaign to help raise funds for "Autumn Moon".

“Autumn Moon” is directed by Randy Fabert and stars Bill Oberst Jr.(Children of Sorrow, Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies), Lynn Lowry (Shivers, Cat People), Timothy Waldrip (Kiss of the Vampire, 21 Jump Street), Joe Kidd (That’s What She Said),  Nathaniel Grauwelman (Abraham Lincoln vs Zombies), Iabou Windimere (Psycho Killer, Sidney), Jocelyn Tanis (The Medal), Larry Combs,  Gerri Sutyak (Buffy the Vampire Slayer),  Sonny Burnette (Zombies R Friends), Richard Aughpin (Dragoon, Sidney), and Randy Fabert (Psycho Killer).

Pulp writer Michael Renee Allen thought the house on the edge of the woods would be the perfect place to write his next novel. He soon finds that the forest has more to offer than just fresh air and a nice view. Something unspeakable is stalking the forest. A cunning force of pure evil that hunts by night, painting the forest with blood.

“Ladies Night” Short Film To Become Feature Film?

ladies nightRyan Stacy from Concept Media is posted a pic on Facebook teasing “Ladies Night” as a feature film. The project is still in the early stages but the original cast from the short film have verbally committed to taking on the killer femme fatales. Ryan Stacy is the director of indie faves “Midsummer Nightmares” and “Midsummer Nightmares II: Summer’s End”. He also collaborated on the horror anthology “Watch This” which features the short film “Ladies Night”. The cast of killer scream queens include Christy Faulkner, Amanda Collins, Emily Sewell-Smith. It is cool that the three ladies have already shown interest in the project. I am excited to see this film happen because I feel that 2014 is definitely the year of the Femme Fatale Noir picture.

“Ladies Night” is a twisted tale of three friends out to enjoy the night and meet some guys. Unfortunately for the guys sex is not the first thing on these ladies’ mind. My thoughts on the short film are as follows: The story is fun, fast and even throws in some graphic gore scene below the belt. This one was very entertaining and the ladies actually out shine the guys with the acting.

New Full Length Trailer For “Lizzie Borden Took An Ax”

lizzie-borden-took-an-axeCheck out the full length trailer for “Lizzie Borden Took An Ax”. There is hardly any time when a TV movie catches my eye or gets me excited. This one has me watering at the mouth! 1-it deals with the one real life killer that I have ever had a fan fetish over-Lizzie Borden. 2-It has Christina Ricci, who I think is Indie fierce!

“Lizzie Borden Took An Ax” airs on Lifetime January 25t at 8 pm eastern time. The movie also stars Billy Campbell and Clea DuVall. “It’s not just a disturbing nursery rhyme! Now the true story of how Lizzie Borden murdered her parents (or did she?) in the summer of 1892 is being brought to Lifetime, with Christina Ricci as the eponymous Lizzie. The true-crime case captured national attention when it first happened, proving that Americans obsession with scandalous and sordid tales is nothing new.

” The nursery rhyme “Lizzie Borden took an ax…and gave her mother forty whacks…when she saw what she had done, she gave her father forty-one” has been folklore for generations. But, in fact, it was Lizzie Borden — one of the most legendary figures in American history — who first whetted the public’s voracious interest in scandalous crimes in the 1800s with her own gruesome story involving the brutal murder of her parents.

Pagan Festival Shout Out: Thorrablot

thorJanuary 16th is the midwinter festival Thorrablot. The festival is a pagan time to resubmit ones oaths and prayers to the gods for blessing during the coldest and darkest days of winter. The festival is in honor of Thor who beats back the forces of winter and brings about the coming spring. Thorrablot starts with dinner of foods that are actually the smoked/pickled produce of the previous year. It is a Scandinavian tradition with lots of Viking history.

In Icland Thorrablot was abolished during the Christianization of Iceland, but resurrected in the 19th century as a midwinter celebration that continues to be celebrated to this day. The timing for the festival coincides with the month of Thorri, according to the old Icelandic calendar, which begins on the first Friday after January 19th (the 13th week of winter).  Origins of the name "Thorri" are unclear but it is most likely derived from Norwegian king Thorri SnƦrsson, or Thor the God of Thunder in the old Nordic religion.

On this occasion, locals come together to eat, drink and be merry. Customary, the menu consists of unusual culinary delicacies, known as traditional Icelandic food. These will include rotten shark’s meat (hĆ”karl), boiled sheep’s head, (sviĆ°) and congealed sheep’s blood wrapped in a ram’s stomach (blĆ³Ć°mƶr)! This is traditionally washed down with some Brennivin - also known as Black Death – a potent schnapps made from potato and caraway. After the Thorrablot dinner traditional songs, games and story telling are accompanied by dancing and in true Icelandic style continue until the early hours of the morning! If you fail to receive a personal invitation to a family feast, local restaurants will often add Thorrablot colour and taste to their menus.

After the Thorrablot dinner group games, old songs and stories begin. So onn this day, raise a horn, gather family and friends together for a great feast, music and celebration. Give thanks to Thor on this day and celebrate the first half of winter being behind you as the spring warmth draws nearer.

My Review Of “Screen” 2013

11023_275
“Screen” is an indie horror film from David Paul Baker about the mystery and nightmare surrounding a tragic event around the screening of a low-budget questionable film in the 70’s. In Baker’s film two friends decide to reconnect while exploring the mystery surrounding the event when the 40th anniversary of the tragic presents an opportunity to revisit the drive-in as a party is set to celebrate the anniversary. The official synopsis is as follows : A group of horror fans are found scared to death in front of a drive-in movie screen. Whatever they saw, also bled into their screens on their mobile devices. We go back 24 hours to follow two of the characters from this group. Lola (Nicole Alonso) & Carrie (Leslie Andrews) go on a road trip to attend this Halloween screening event. It's being held at an old disused drive-in movie theatre. They also research the past reports about the drive-in. It's haunted! People died in front of the screen in the 70's. This event is the 40th anniversary of the deaths. Lola begins to realize that carry has personal reasons for attending this party.

“Screen” is more horror-ish, the film is a nice steady story that celebrates the thrill of belonging to an indie horror community as the two friends rekindle their friendship around a story that really brings together two really cool elements, drive-in culture, and indie horror. One is thriving and the other is having a mild revitalization in pockets of the community. In “Screen” David Paul Baker manages to create a nice nostalgic vitality for the drive-in while highlighting some comradery between actual horror fans who make up much of the cast. As for actual horror, there isn’t a lot of that shown in this film. That doesn’t stop this film from being a slow and steady train ride into a fireball of horror with the film’s climax.

The acting and story in “Screen” are pretty cool and modern only leaning lightly on classic elements to create a creepy backdrop for Nicole Alfonso and Leslie Andrews to give a nice, relatable performance. There are some definite moments that seem to show more a male driven want than need when displaying the relationship between the two girls. The hotel scenes and some of the conversation between the two characters at time seem unrealistic and completely pointless other than the desire to show why hetero men love horror cliches. I don’t really think when spend a lot of time talking about cum and girl-on-girl action as was written in this film- but that is just me. It doesn’t take away from the over-all pleasure of the film though. Anyway, as far as action goes, the film is slow moving right up until the last 25 minutes of the film at which point it is like looking into the mouth of Hell and loving it the whole time.

“Screen” delivers a nice, indie atmospheric, personal tale that is delivered wonderfully by two talented actresses. The film really opens up more the horror element at the end which is abrupt and leaves questions that beg answers in a sequel-maybe?! Anyway go into the film knowing that it isn’t a thrill-a-minute nightmare story but for indie film fans that like a good story that leads to one hellish ending then “Screen” is definitely that.

“Son Of Ghostman” Movie News

Son Of Ghostman Drops Online

son of ghostman
Montrose, CA 01/14/2014 Boonbam Productions is proud to announce the release of their first feature length film entitled “Son Of Ghostman” written and directed by first time film maker Kurt Edward Larson, and produced by Gabriel Guyer.

“Son of Ghostman” is a romantic comedy which finds Denny McNamara (played by Devin Ordoyne) an unemployed,  recently dumped man in his early thirties who decides to moonlight as the ‘son’ of his childhood hero, a bygone local horror host by the name of Ghostman. When his videos go viral, he must settle an old score with a high school rival and figure out where his life is headed, all while keeping his identity secret from a new woman in town he’s fallen for.

The movie features an ensemble of fresh faces including Devin Ordoyne, Angela Gulner, Marlon Correa, Matthew Boehm, Daniel McCann, and writer director Kurt Larson as the sinister Count Dracool.

“Son of Ghostman” was shot on location in Montrose, CA. Principal photography began June 1, 2012 the day after Larson and his wife Nicole returned from their honeymoon. The newlyweds living room was turned into the set  for “Son of Ghostman”, where the majority of the film was shot over 25 days. Larsons new bride was supportive of the film making endeavor stating, "Certainly it was bizarre waking up and walking through the Son of Ghostman's actual horror host set in the morning, I became really skilled at dodging candelabras and bats. Eventually it became normal and really, was an amazing experience. I'd never think twice about it again."

Larson took a year to finish post production learning all the steps of editing and color correcting along the way. In the meantime Guyer reworked and polished the sound. Larson said of the film making process, “We did every single facet of the film on our own, totally guerilla style. We basically committed to making the film, no matter the obstacles in our way. As we often say, we were two determined idiots running around town with a camera.”

Once the film was completed, the film makers reached out to several acclaimed horror host looking for their seal of approval. Larson has a great admiration for the genre, “As a storyteller, I was inspired by the fact that these little-known guys, these horror hosts, found a way to make people smile despite little fame or financial gain. they did it to entertain, because it was fun to do, and different than the norm. I thought film should be like that, so i wanted to pay homage to not just them, but to their strange path of life and the good it represents. I just think they’re so awesome.”

The movie has received some high praise from modern day horror hosts including, Larry Underwood who portrays Dr. Gangrene on Nashville's long running Creature Feature and Dr. Gangrene Presents. Underwood said of the movie, "Son of Ghostman is a terrific film that is a loving tribute to horror hosts from the golden age of television. The film is really well made and is a nice introduction to the genre for folks unfamiliar with it. I really dug it."
