My Review Of "Perfect Skin"

Bob, a cordial tattoo artist just found out he has Parkinson’s, a disease that will end his life long career. With the clock ticking, Bob’s obsessed with creating one final masterpiece before his body deteriorates. Just then he meets Katia, a young Polish woman with perfect, unblemished, untouched skin. He needs his final canvas, so he offers Katia a free tattoo, but she declines. Bob cannot accept NO for an answer, so he kidnaps Katia, locks her in a cell and goes to work on her blank canvas of a body.

"Perfect Skin" is an impressive body horror that walks the line between sadism and sensuality. The film is directed by Kevin Chicken and stars Richard Brake, Natalia Kostrzewa, and Jo Woodcock.

The story is a dark character study on an artist's obsessed nature as his desire to create a masterpiece of body art on the perfect skin, and the manifestation of truly sinister actions he takes. It is all done with an almost breathless calm as a psychological drama destorts into something almost akin to bondage fetish. Of course Chicken never steps into such exploitational domain. He manages a hypnotic, intimate thriller that gingerly blurs the lines between body modification art and horror.

The casting is perfection. The characters are strong, recognizable people we can all relate to, and who doesn't know "that" tattoo guy. Which makes the film more personable and terrifying. The direction that Chicken takes, going for more, subtle-suggestive expressions of horror, while still crsating a chilling story is beyond impressive for a directorial debut.

"Perfect Skin" isn't your standard full-throttle psycho killer film. It stays more subdued as it creates a gradual tension. Most of the film's setting hangs closer to late 2000's exploitation/torture motif, never letting you forget that this is a horror movie. Plus, what gore is onscreen is enough to garner approval from any visceral driven horror fan.

Overall I really liked "Perfect Skin". This isn't usually my subgenre, but the story, and characters are so real any one from ripped-from-the-headlines thriller fans to giallo inspired hardcore fans can get into it. Add to that some great cinematography and sweet music score and "Perfect Skin" is one to watch. My only negative would be that I didn't care for the ending- the last few frames. (4/5)

My Review Of "The Pining"

"The Pining" is a supernatural horror with crime thriller noir aspirations. The film is written and directed by Eduardo Castrillo and produced by Uncia Films. It stars Diogo Hausen (The Dark Knight Rises), Tom Sizemore (Mission OverlordBlack WakeHalloweed; et al), Jackie Dallas (Stranger Things) and Natalie Gibson.

When members of Joe’s therapy group start dying under mysterious circumstances, Detective Harris is forced to reopen a cold case. Her only lead: burnt-out priest Father William  – the group therapy leader who seems to know more than what is in his police statements…

And the movie is as vague as the synopsis reads. Keep it handy, you may wanna refer back to it through the course of watching the movie. You will be as confused and full of questions as the generic detective struggling to solve this case. There's no consistency or proper train of thought going on to anchor the scenes coherently or to allow for the viewer to connect to the writer/director's vision.

There are moments that almost spark some legitimate indie quality. The scenes between the photographer and love-interest model flow easily and naturally. Unfortunately just as you let go of the irritation over lack of understandable story development, editing flaws come along to kill the mood. I swear I saw a couple of scenes play out in different variants of the same scene.

As far as the horror elements go, I liked the body count, I appreciated the follow through on the effects, even with such low-budget quality. There's a few cool kill moments in "The Pining". I have seen plenty of low-budget, homemade horror movies that have either created good horror elements or blew it totally. Now this film definitely blows it, just not so much in the horror, as in every where else.  I don't recommend this one unless you just wanna see Tom Sizemore for what little time he is on screen. My Review Of "The Mummy Rebirth"

"The Mummy Rebirth" is written by Justin Price and co-directed with Khu. The film is a supernatural horror revisiting the classic Mummy horror story. It stars Carter, David E. Cazares, Deanna Grace Congo  Shamel Hashish and Brittany Goodwin.

Two treasure hunters uncover a sealed tomb and awaken a mummy that has waited years to come back and wipe humanity from the face of the Earth. It’s a race against time as they try to stop the Mummy from wreaking havoc on the modern world…

The story is adventurous. Much more than what a movie production of this caliber can generally accomplish. There are familiar tropes, obvious set-up points and very stereotypical characters. The film plays along the lines of "The Mummy" ( Brendan Fraser's). It opens up almost drawing from Tomb Raider influences. And had it not gotten of with such a drawn out start, might have garnered some enthusiasm.

I wasn't expecting a lot from the film, to be honest. Movies about mummies tend to let me down. Still Price and his team should be applauded. They went for something big and they went all in. The production staff, casting, CGI team, everything (even as much falls flat) shows total commitment and unified vision for bringing the story together. I just got the impression it was a small story stretched out way too much, in order to create a feature length story with very little substantial matter worked in.

That being said, "The Mummy Rebirth" picks up a little half way through the middle and really kicks up the adventure side. As tacky as I thought the CGI effects were, they did provide enough to match a lot of the early 2000's Syfy stuff. Plus I loved the creature design for the mummies and the settings and backdrops rocked.

Overall this one will appeal to a small select low-budget audience. The majority of horror fans who aren't as forgiving when it comes to quality and substance will not, still "The Mummy Rebirth" isn't the worst Mummy film I have seen lately. Oh and I almost forgot, the thing basically turns into a Kaiju monster movie by the end. (2.5/5)

My Review Of "Is That You? (¿ERES TÚ, PAPÁ?)

Cuban horror "Is That You? (¿ERES TÚ, PAPÁ?)" is directed by Rudy Riverón Sánchez and stars Gabriela Ramos, Lynn Cruz, Eslinda Núñez , Osvaldo Doimeadiós, and Jorge Enrique Caballero. This atmospheric psychological thriller is Riverón's feature debut.

Lili, a young girl living in the Cuban countryside, and her mother, are trapped in a modest shack by her domineering father. When he suddenly disappears, Lili decides to carry out a ritual to help bring him back...leading her to uncover a disturbing truth about his disappearance.

That synopsis is slightly more innocent than the truth of the story's subject matter. Same with Lili the main character. Riverón places her in a much darker, ambiguous position. The film is slow, depressive and methodical with damaged characters going through some disturbing situations.

The cast give excellent performances bringing this flawed and scarred family to life. They all seem to be zombie walking through their existence. It creates a haunting atmosphere that is relentless in the way it grips you. The slow pace can at moments become annoying and there are moments when it could have benefited from a little speed. Still I get what the director was going for.

Most of the film's horror is subjective, really playing on the psychological nature of the story's material. The overall nature of these characters relationships create an atmosphere of tension and danger. The soundtrack adds an unnerving edge. This isn't a shock horror or heavy thriller with jump scares. Everything is minimal, except the cruelty on display. Plus asthetically, the look and feel of the film pulls heavy from traditional horror, both in setting and character.

Overall "Is That You?" is a nice psychological horror for indie fans looking into dark character study films that use atmosphere to frame people's darker sides. If you go in thinking this is a gory, thriller then you will be disappointed. This film goes deeper than that, and in a slow, disturbing way. I say check it out. (4/5)

My Review Of "Reborn"

"Reborn" is a paranormal horror released by Jinga Films. The film is directed by Julian Richards and stars Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator), Michael Pare (Streets Of Fire), Chaz Bono (American Horror Story), Rae Dawn Chong (Commando), Monte Markham (We Are Still Here) and introducing talented newcomer Kayleigh Gilbert. It is described as a nostalgic celebration to classic horror.

Reborn is a contemporary Frankenstein story about a stillborn baby girl brought back to life by an electrical storm before being abducted from hospital by a morgue attendant. On her sixteenth birthday, empowered with the gift to manipulate electricity, she escapes her captor and sets out to find her birth mother leaving a trail of destruction behind her.

The film really does have a classic horror feel, the almost supernatural fantasy-inspired atmosphere surrounding such a paranormal tale is instantly intriguing. And there is very clear references to Stephen King's stuff, the tragic nature of Tess' origin story and ongoing troubled existence is reminiscent of both Carrie and Charlie oozes from this character. The whole telekinesis aspect aside, "Reborn" really does play like a video rental from the past.

The characters are rich and engaging. I would have loved a bit more time spent on exploring the dynamic between the story's two main characters, but if more kills supplants stronger story arc then I'm cool with it. "Reborn" does have some flaws, for one it moves too fast for any real connection to develop between audience and character. The second I will get to in a moment. The cast is great. There are recognizable genre actors attached to this one and they all deliver. Especially newcomer Gilbert. Her and Crampton's time on screen is a sweet spot for this movie.

The special effects in "Reborn" are mixed, both in technique and quality. Usually a paranormal film has some leeway when using CGI. And for the most part this film has some shinning moments, blending CGI effects to enhance more practical stunts. However some moments come off cheaper than what this film deserves. That being said, there is some quality kills in "Reborn", and one really awesome jump scare, brutal kill that got me- got me good! Definitely check it out. (4/5)

My Review Of "Velocipastor"

"Velocipastor" is a fun, indie horror comedy written and directed by Brendan Steere. The film stars Gregory James Cohan, Alyssa Kempinski, Claire Hsu, Daniel Steere, Yang Jiechang, Jesse Turits, Fernando Pacheco de Castro, and Aurelio Voltaire. "Velocipastor" is truly destined for cult comedy classic status, blending supernatural whimsy with a tongue-in-cheek at spiritual conviction.

After a devastating family tragedy, a priest travels to China to find deeper spirituality, but instead is endowed with an ancient ability that allows him to turn into a dinosaur. At first, he is horrified by his newfound superpower, but a local prostitute convinces him to use his newfound gift to fight evil – and ninjas.

I fully expected to go into this movie finding it too ridiculous to review seriously. And yeah, in a way I was right. "Velocipastor" is ridiculous, it can't be taken seriously but I enjoyed every minute of it. It becomes clear very early that this movie means to be over-the-top. Much like classic horror comedies in the past, "Full Moon High", and "Pandemonium", this film knows it is absurd comedy and total cheese.

Brendan Steere understands perfectly well the type of film he is making, and he was smart enough to gather a cast and crew who were in on the joke too. Some of the acting obviously falls short and it is a tightrope walk getting this story from scene one to the end without total collapse. Still, somehow, everything holds together with fun, entertaining craziness. And genuine laughs.

The effects are a blend of cheap CGI and low tech practical effects that fit inbetween gaming graphics and Adult Swim stuff. It would have been cool if more focus on creating a darker raptor had been taken, but still, it is a movie about a young priest turning into a dinosaur so the puppet/costume seems fitting. I have to add that "Velocipastor" has a cool soundtrack. And the whole music video montage in the center was entertaining as heck!

Overall this isn't gonna be everyone's take on "Velocipastor". And I get it, a lot of people can only get into spoof horror if it has a big budget to sell the jokes. I enjoyed this film. It is silly, over-the-top, and entertaining. It doesn't take itself serious but everyone involved were serious about creating this tongue-in-cheek bit of satire. (3/5)

Filming The Great Getaway: My Interview With Writer, Director And Star Of "The Refuge"- Keith Sutliff

KS Pictures released action thrill-ride, "The Refuge", follows a getaway driver who finds himself in harm's way when he gets caught up in a job involving casino heist. The film comes from acclaimed filmmaker Keith Sutliff, who wrote, directed and starred as the film's lead. "The Refuge" released theatrically this past June.

A Los Angeles resident since 2012, Keith Sutliff is originally from Tampa FL. After starting production company, KS Pictures LLC, he has gone on to produce, write, and direct multiple short films before making his first feature film in 2016- "The Mason Brothers". Now Sutliff has returned with his most recent action thriller, here is what he had to say about his filmmaking process and inspiration.

ASOUTHERNLIFEWhere did the inspiration come from for "The Refuge"?
KEITH SUTLIFF: I always wanted to create a driver film for years. A getaway driver film to be specific. There has been so many great getaway driver films over the years. This has been a type of film I have always loved growing up. Also I wanted to create the sensation that the audience is in the backseat with this getaway driver doing jobs around town at night. A lot of the film is shot from the back seat. Like the old Back To The Future or Transformers ride at Universal Studios. You are in the back seat of this car driving around town (Los Angeles). The video game Grand Theft Auto is kinda like this too as the main character is doing all these jobs around town in a car. I wanted that video game type story line.

ASOUTHERNLIFE: Was this a passion project?
KEITH SUTLIFF: For sure! All my films are. Touching base more from above. I have always loved driver films growing up and Grand Theft Auto the video game.

ASOUTHERNLIFE: As the film's director what was the hardest part of filming?
KEITH SUTLIFF: Balancing all the jobs. Directing while acting in the film as the lead, managing the project as a whole from a producers stand point even while on set, filming at night around Los Angeles at many locations.

ASOUTHERNLIFE: Did you go into the creative process with complete understanding you would play the story's lead?
KEITH SUTLIFF: Yes for sure. I always wanted to play the role of a getaway driver since moving to Los Angeles about 7 years ago. I didn't believe anyone would give me that opportunity to act in such a role so I made my own role and film of it.

ASOUTHERNLIFEDid knowing you were going to be the film's lead make it easier or harder both in writing the script and directing?
KEITH SUTLIFF: And which do you enjoy more, the acting or the directing? I think it made it easier. Because I knew what I wanted for the character when writing it and also what shots I wanted to show the story on screen as a director. I enjoy them both a lot. But I think I like directing a lot because the director is the overall vision of the film and how it will be displayed on screen.

ASOUTHERNLIFE: What can fans expect with "The Refuge"?
KEITH SUTLIFF: They can expect a cerebral type thriller film centered around a getaway driver at night in Los Angeles. A film that is centered and told through actions on screen carried out by music with not a ton of dialogue in scenes. Kinda like 2001 A Space Odyssey by Stanley Kubrick or some of the older classical films from the early 1900s. The film shows a lot of the behind the scenes of this getaway driver preparing for jobs. It is not a car chase action movie and was not supposed to be. It really focuses on the music and actions on screen as mentioned before.

ASOUTHERNLIFEWhat other projects do you have in works, both starring and directing?
KEITH SUTLIFF: Yes I have a few. Suitcase City is my next feature I am working on and plan to do. It is a Action/Crime/Sci-Fi film based in the future around this martial arts tournament and gang leader of this city. I don't want to spoil more. People will have to check it out when it comes out in the future!
