Aspect Ratio Sells BLOOD PARADISE to Artsploitation Films for North American Distribution

Aspect Ratio Sells BLOOD PARADISE to Artsploitation Films for North American; English-Language Swedish Horror/Comedy To Be Released Across All Platforms in early 2019

Aspect Ratio today announces the sale of BLOOD PARADISE, the Swedish horror-comedy from producer-director provocateurs AndrĂ©a Winter and Patrick von Barkenberg, to Artsploitation Films. The deal was negotiated by Aspect Ratio’s Jordan Mattos and Artsploitation’s Raymond Murray during the American Film Market.

Artsploitation, which acquired all North American rights, plans for a second quarter 2019 release followed by availability on home video outlets, collaborating with Aspect Ratio on a theatrical release at select venues. The picture premiered at the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Scary Movies Festival in New York, and will make its International Premiere at the Molins Film Festival in Spain on November 12.

Reeling after her latest novel flops, best-selling crime writer Robin Richards (Winter) is sent by her publisher to the Swedish countryside to regain inspiration. There alone, she comes across an assortment of peculiar characters, including her driver and most obsessive fan, his explosively jealous wife, and the progressively more unhinged man who owns the farm that’s hosting her. Totally out of place in her new surroundings—for one, she is always dressed for glamorous, big-city life—Robin discovers just how dangerous these oddballs may be. Bathed in dreamy atmospherics and streaked with offbeat humor, the film pays an homage to Brian De Palma’s oeuvre and a host of fabulously chic Seventies genre pics.

Paradise marks the feature debut of Swedish electro-pop musician BABY YAGA (Winter) and German director Patrick von Barkenberg. Barkenberg, a graduate of the American Film Institute, shot the film with partner Winter at Winter’s family home in the Swedish countryside. Winter composed the haunting score and songs, while producing the picture and also playing the lead role of Robin Richards.

Winter says, "Like my music, Artsploitation explores the dark aspects of ourselves but is also not afraid to embrace the campy and the bizarre. We are thrilled by the prospect of joining the Artsploitation family with our first feature. We love Ray’s visionary catalog of idiosyncratic, provocative cinema that elevates the horror genre in intriguing ways and we are beyond excited to introduce our baby to audiences in North America."

My Review Of "Clyde Cooper"

"Clyde Cooper" is a neo-crime thriller directed by Peter Daskaloff. The film stars Jordi Vilasuso, Abigail Titmuss, Richard Neil, and Aria Sirvaitis. It is described as "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" meets classic Hitchcock.

Jordi Vilasuso plays Silicon Valley private detective Clyde Cooper. Hired by a tech investor to find a missing woman, the love of his life, who had mysteriously disappeared, Cooper runs into an odd ring of strange women, and weird characters until he finds much more than what he’s bargaining for.

The film is the typical crime noir character play in full cookie cutter fashion, with a bit of that California neon afterglow. The story has all the familiar tropes and archetypesee you expect to find in P I melodrama. The brooding mancho detective, a parade of eccentric,  mysteries suspect and side pieces, and a puzzle to put together.

The acting in "Clyde Cooper" is decent, albeit  forgettable with Jordi Vilasuso being the only real character that comes alive both in writing and onscreen. Even with the stereotypical clichĂ© attributes,  and misogynistic attitude,  he still is commanding in his scenes.  Plus he delivers such dialog cheese like a pro.

The film stays at a pretty even pace - slow burn. The action never really amps up to anything much, actually the energy set forth in the opening scene is lost in the first thirty minutes,  and is never recaptured. There is a quality reveal at the end that manages to keep the element of surprise right up until it is shown. Overall "Clyde Cooper" , although told nicely with good production value, is slightly disappointing, but give it a once over. (2.5/5)
