Pagan Festival Shout Out: Winter Solstice/Yule Begins & Divalia- Festival To Angerona
December 21st is a very special day. It is the time when Yule begins, the time of the winter solstice. The very day when the sun begins it’s journey bringing it’s warm, nurturing light back to the Northern Hemisphere. Yule is a spiritual festival in Paganism. The earliest references to Yule are by way of indigenous Germanic month names (Ærra Jéola (Before Yule) or Jiuli and Æftera Jéola (After Yule). Scholars have connected the celebration to the Wild Hunt, the god Odin and the pagan Anglo-Saxon Modranicht.
Yule is celebrated with gatherings that often involve a meal and gift giving. However not all modern pagans celebrate the holiday quite the same way. Some choose to ritualize the holiday as close to their interpretation of pre-Christian, Germanic tradition while others (myself included) choose more eclectic practices that blend various traditions from the many Neopagan and Traditional Heathen practices. Dec. 21st is the solstice which begins the 12 day celebration of Yule. In the Heathen tradition of Urglaawe Yuletide begins at sundown on 20 December and ends at sundown on 1 January. In most forms of Wicca, this holiday is celebrated at the winter solstice as the rebirth of the Great horned hunter god, who is viewed as the newborn solstice sun. The method of gathering for this sabbat varies by practitioner. Some have private ceremonies at home, while others do so with their covens.
On the day of this festival the pontifices performed sacrifices in the temple of Voluptia, or the goddess of joy and pleasure, who, some say, was the same with Angerona, and supposed to drive away all the sorrow and chagrin of life. She is considered to be the goddess of the winter solstice, who helps the sun get through this dark, difficult period. In this interpretation Her silence indicates concentration or meditation, and Her inner voice that conjures a powerful spell to help the sun regain its strength. She was represented holding Her finger to Her bound mouth in a gesture (apparently) requesting quiet. Some ancients believed that She was thus a Goddess of Silence, or that She represented the secret magical name of Rome which was not to be spoken aloud. Or that She was the Goddess of fear and anguish, and could prevent or drive away these feelings.

“Evil Never Dies” A.K.A. “The Haunting Of Harry Payne” UK Release Date
The British Supernatural Crime-Noir “The Haunting Of Harry Payne” has a new title and a release date for the film’s UK DVD release. “Evil Never Dies” will be available for horror fan’s on January 13th 2014. It is available for pre-order at Amazon UK right now. I had the opportunity to review the film last month and found the story’s arch captivating and very mature which is a bit refreshing in the horror world where a lot of the material tends to flow more puerile to draw in the young adult audience seeking more dark comedy, blood and over-simplified typification. “Evil Never Dies” is directed by Martyn Pick and stars Tony Scannell, Graham Cole, Anouska Mond, Fliss Walton, Katy Manning, P.H. Moriarty and Neil Maskell.
Ex-London gangster Harry Payne retires to Norfolk to be close to his wife, driven mad when he was forced to kill his best friend, psychopathic gang boss Eugene McCann. Immediately he is drawn into a murder mystery in which an obsessive local police detective targets him as the killer. Unknown to anyone, Harry has psychic abilities he has always suppressed with alcohol. Now he must confront the supernatural and his own personal demons to save his wife and free the tormented souls of the ghosts that haunt him. You can read my review of the film here.

Yuletide Greetings! Today I made my first ever large Yule Blessing Wreath
Yeah I know I am a few days late but I have been decorating for what seems like forevah! But today I finally made time to make my 2013 Yule Blessing Wreath. Normally I make a circle out of thin wire and string light around it and make the wreath that way. This year I decided to get more in depth. I started with a sage blessing throughout the home and for myself, then I set out to create this wonderful symbol of positive blessing for the Holiday season.
I found some gnarly vines to create my circle and base form with hanging across the creek that flows through the property. I would have loved to have three vines to braid for this but only found two that would work on this scale.

Then I took some evergreen and fastened it to the wreath until I had a tradition evergreen wreath made. Wild Eye made it really hard to get the work done after demanding my attention and claiming the wreath.
Afterwards I bound the evergreen into a circle to hold it to the vine with twine. Then I added my lights and some wild berries that are still hanging from some trees in my yard.
Once I had my evergreen secured and formed into a circle with the lights. I formed my star for the center of the wreath. Then I finished off with a few more wild items from around the property that are growing before adding more lights. Finally my finished Yule Blessing Wreath was hung for the holiday season!

“Jinn” Release Date Announced
From the Press Release
Detroit-based Exxodus Pictures and Freestyle Releasing announce a North American wide theatrical release date of April 4, 2014, for JINN, a tension-filled supernatural thriller. The film, written and directed by Ajmal Zaheer Ahmad, was produced by Ahmad, Benjamin Dresser, and Alan Noel Vega and stars Dominic Rains (Flight 93), Serinda Swan (USA’s “Graceland”), Ray Park (Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace), Faran Tahir (Elysium), and William Atherton (Die Hard). Richard Mandell, Najam Syed, and Shahid Syed executive produced the film for Exxodus.
The amazing story of JINN involves ancient mythological beings that have rarely been explored in US cinemas. The premise of the jinn concept, known to over 1 billion people around the world, involves ghost-like entities and revolves around creation mythology.
Already generating a substantial amount of early attention, this is the first film to accurately introduce and portray the jinn concept. JINN is also unique in that the vehicle used in the action sequences in the film, known as the “Firebreather,” was designed by director Ahmad and is the first vehicle in motion picture history available to the public for purchase. The “Firebreather” is a V8, 618-horsepower super exotic American muscle car with 50 limited editions being produced as the exact replica of the vehicle in the film. The car, several of which have already been sold, was designed by Exxodus to honor their hometown by creating modern design that fuses the soul of classic, American muscle.
The distribution deal was negotiated by Freestyle’s Co-President Mark Borde, Head of Acquisitions Chris Charalambous, and Richard Mandell and Najam Syed from Exxodus Pictures.
“The Exxodus team and I are very excited to be releasing JINN to the world. We have a tremendous responsibility to live up to the collective imagination of the people that already know about the jinn as well as revealing the concept to those who have never heard of it. Freestyle Releasing is the perfect partner as they have had many successes in the genre, and we feel they understand the originality of the concept,” said Exxodus’ Ahmad.
“We are happy to be distributing a film that will introduce Western audiences to an entirely new, entirely different supernatural concept; and I know that our team is excited to get this movie out to the public,” said Freestyle’s Borde.

Pagan Festival Shout Out: Saturnalia
Saturnalia is a festival of light leading to the winter solstice, with the abundant presence of candles symbolizing the quest for knowledge and truth. The renewal of light and the coming of the new year was celebrated in the later Roman Empire at the Dies Natalis of Sol Invictus, the "Birthday of the Unconquerable Sun," on December 25. Saturnalian license also permitted slaves to enjoy a pretense of disrespect for their masters, and exempted them from punishment. It was a time for free speech. The Sigillaria on December 23 was a day of gift-giving. Because gifts of value would mark social status contrary to the spirit of the season, these were often the pottery or wax figurines called sigillaria made specially for the day, candles, or "gag gifts". A lot of these elements where merged in with the Catholic’s Christmas in order to bring Pagans to Christianity.
Today Saturnalia is an exceptional time to raise the Holiday festivities of Yule and Christmas just a little bitter higher in our desire for end of year merriment. Bringing trees indoors to decorate which most people do, decorating outdoor trees with sun and star symbols which I often do, and using swathes of greenery over doorways, windows, and on your person. Decorations are secondary to revelry, feasting, drinking, merry-making, pranks, and gift-giving are the major objective for celebrating Saturnalia.
Biblioteca Arcana's suggestions are for celebrating the religious aspects of the Saturnalia and its two adjoining holidays, the Opalia for Saturn's wife, Ops, goddess of plenty, and the Consualia for Consus, "god of the storage bin." The site provides a complete ritual with an equipment list, information on preparation, location, timing, the banquet, and the conclusion.
Chants for Saturnalia:
Save the seed corn for the sowing;
Plant the seed to start it growing.
_______________________________
Bring the light to wake the seed;
Let the shoot from earth be freed.

“Lizzie Borden Took An Ax” Promos Leave A Few Marks
“Lizzie Borden Took An Ax” airs on Lifetime January 25t at 8 pm eastern time. The movie also stars Billy Campbell and Clea DuVall. “It’s not just a disturbing nursery rhyme! Now the true story of how Lizzie Borden murdered her parents (or did she?) in the summer of 1892 is being brought to Lifetime, with Christina Ricci as the eponymous Lizzie. The true-crime case captured national attention when it first happened, proving that Americans obsession with scandalous and sordid tales is nothing new.”
The nursery rhyme “Lizzie Borden took an ax…and gave her mother forty whacks…when she saw what she had done, she gave her father forty-one” has been folklore for generations. But, in fact, it was Lizzie Borden — one of the most legendary figures in American history — who first whetted the public’s voracious interest in scandalous crimes in the 1800s with her own gruesome story involving the brutal murder of her parents.

My Review Of “Revolution 666”
The story is a very fun, cheeky creative tale that is very entertaining to see unfold. It takes me back to the vinyl days of forcing my albums to play backwards-by hand-hoping to here some kind of witchy message. The plot has a few quirks unfolding within it that sometimes seem unwarranted or ill-acted but the execution of the story’s ideas flow pretty well. There are some nice moments in “Revolution 666” that kind of validate the film’s script. Now it is a very low budget horror in the vein of “Death By VHS” and “Treasure Chest Of Horrors II” so the acting is amateurish on a basic level but the lines are very rarely flubbed and more often throw back to the early cult film era in the 80’s VHS hayday. The action sequences where the chilling thrills are enacted seem half-hearted and not quite convincingly acted-it would have been nice to see more attention paid to that element of the film because it would have elevated “Revolution 666” to the level of Jaissle’s earliest cult favorites like “The Necro Files”, and “Back From Hell”.
The special effects are something that also gets the lessor of attention. They present as cheap, really cheap and are executed on that homemade-horror scale, registering on the lower side of the scale. I wish that a bit more care was taken with the gory effects and blood quality because the cheap-o look takes away from the film’s overall effect on me as a viewer. However the soundtrack and sound effects utilized in “Revolution 666” are hot as hell and become infectious. I really enjoyed those elements a lot. It adds the classic Matt Jaissle signature to the film. If I ever find myself in a horror film sort styled ending to my life I want Matt Jaissle directing the soundtrack to it. Over all this film creates a lot of what the director intends- groovy cult story, and a cool original killer with the undead slasher character. The acting and dialog often miss and the special effects in the kill scenes are too cheap to really gain favor with most horror fans. For the most part “Revolution 666” will disappoint the quality seeking low-budget horror fans but the majority of homemade, D.I.Y horror people will find some timeless, cult entertainment with the film. Ultimately I can’t say to see the film is a must, but there is no harm in cheeky fun which is what this film really embodies. Just go into it with caution and little expectations. I do recommend watching Matt Jaissle’s earliest films first or after to gain full appreciation for the director’s twisted but worthy talent.
