Lights Of Isis-August 12th, 2014:

IsisIsis is a goddess from the Egyptian Pantheon who is about as old as the history of Egypt itself. She is a goddess of all things, known as the goddess of 10,000 names.  Throughout history She has been worshipped by thousands of people all over the globe.  She has appeared to many of her followers-answering their prayers, requests, and questions.

The Festival known as the Lights of Isis marks the time when the days begin to become shorter, and Isis, being very clever and an able woman, continued to search for the pieces of her husband’s body by torchlight. Isis has been worshipped in thousands of countries by thousands of names by thousands of people since the spread of Her worship from Egypt during the Greco-Roman times.  In DeTraci Regula's book Mysteries of Isis, she lists some of the followers found inscribed on temple walls.

Isis receives the same sort of rituals as other Egyptian Deities, including daily offerings. Isis is powerful in the ways of magic, having the ability to create and destroy life with mere words. The best way to tap into Isis’ influence and guidence is produced by words of power, they must be uttered in a certain tone, and at a certain rate, and at a certain time of the day or night, with appropriate gestures or ceremonies. Only when these conditions have been met can true magic occur.

Details And First Images From “Frankenstein’s Patchwork Monster” Released

The first images for “Frankenstein’s Patchwork Monster” have been released along with full details about the project. “Frankenstein’s Patchwork Monster” is being directed by Emil Novak and described as a “Steampunk Horror” film. I like the concept.

PMPress Release:
Currently in production is an imaginative and original Frankenstein film, and genre veteran Melantha Blackthorne is attached to star. Its title is Frankenstein’s Patchwork Monster.

Arguably, when it comes to iconic monsters, the first one that comes into mind is usually “Frankenstein’s monster.” It has been done to death some would say, though the producers of this steampunk noir-horror film would strongly disagree.

Writer/director/producer Emil J. Novak, Sr., says: “Having Melantha involved with this film production has allowed us to go places we could only have dreamed of without her. Her knowledge and acting experience brings a new and refreshing twist to the Bride character.”

The film also stars an assortment of talented local actors: the charismatic Bill Kennedy as Dr. Frankenstein; the unpretentious Patrick Mallette as Dr. Frankenstein’s humble assistant, Herman; Annmarie Bahny; Bob Bozek; Daniel James; Sean Sanders; and Mike Sciabarrasi to name a few.
This production has its share of the good doctor’s monsters and, of course, brides of Frankenstein. Here’s what co-producers Annmarie Bahny and Daniel James have to say about the film: “We are enormously energized to be acting and also producing in this film; being on both sides of the camera allows us to see how striking the overall production is so far and how awe-inspiring its script plays out in every way.”

Regarding the cast, Novak continues: “When we read for the role of Dr. Frankenstein, we were astounded. The first thing that came to my mind was, ‘Wow, this guy IS Dr. Frankenstein!’ Watch out, horror genre; there is a new face of the macabre, and Bill Kennedy is that new face!”

Growing up on horror films from the 1960s and 1970s, one is not hard pressed to be creatively influenced by Hammer Horror and Roger Corman’s Poe cycle of films. This film doesn’t flinch at its influences and strives to homage innovative directors such as Terrance Fisher, William Friedkin, James Whale, and the aforementioned Roger Corman.

As of now plans are in place for a premiere in October 2014.

Blu-ray/DVD Details For “Willow Creek”

wcBobcat Goldthwait’s “Willow Creek” will arrive on Blu-ray/DVD on September 9th, 2014. The film stars Alexie Gilmore, Bryce Johnsonand Steven Streufert. “Willow Creek” is described as an edge of your seat horror that will make you think twice before going into the woods.

Press Release
A young couple find themselves face to face with a terrifying evil when they venture into the heart of Bigfoot country in WILLOW CREEK, director Bobcat Goldthwait’s unique spin on the horror genre. It creeps onto Blu-ray and DVD from Dark Sky Films and MPI Media Group on September 9, 2014, with SRPs, respectively, of $29.98 and $24.98.

Looking to make a splash with his research videos into the existence of Bigfoot, Jim (Bryce Johnson, Pretty Little Liars) and his skeptical girlfriend Kelly (Alexie Gilmore, Labor Day, God Bless America) take a camping trip to the mountains surrounding Willow Creek, California, a small town where famous footage of the legendary Sasquatch was filmed decades earlier. Jim believes Bigfoot exists and is intent on finding the very spot where the huge, hairy, man-like creature supposedly strode.

But before long, Jim and Kelly are lost in the woods and discover that someone - or something - is stalking them. With each passing night bringing unknowable danger, the two must use all of their cunning to try to make it out of the forest alive.

Special features on the BD and DVD include: Commentary with Writer/Director Bobcat Goldthwait and Stars Alexie Gilmore and Bryce Johnson, Deleted Scenes, Bryce Johnson’s "The Making of Willow Creek" and more.

Writer-director Bobcat Goldthwait takes a radical departure from his recent string of black comedies (God Bless America, World’s Greatest Dad) to create a film that shows there are still surprises and shocks to be had in the found-footage genre pioneered by The Blair Witch Project. In her review in The New York Times, Jeannette Catsoulis pointed out Goldthwait "engineers a static, almost wordless 19-minute shot inside a tent that generates more tension than many horror directors achieve with a swarm of Foley artists and a healthier budget. This canny exploitation of the power of silence is unnerving." Tom Huddleston of Time Out London called the film "a whole lot of jarring, juddering fun." Brian Orndorf of Blu-ray.com said, "It’s smaller in scope and horror ambition, which automatically makes it more enjoyable than most of its brethren, creating a mix of local color and camping disaster that’s basic but frightfully effective." "WILLOW CREEK does everything a little bit better than others of its kind," praised Scott Tobias of TheDissolve.com.

Pagan Festival Shout Out: Raksha Bandhan,

1Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu festival that celebrates the love and duty between brothers and sisters;it is held this year on August 10th. The festival is also popularly used to celebrate any brother-sister like loving protective relationship between men and women who are relatives or biologically unrelated. It is calledRakhi Purnima, or simply Rakhi, in many parts of India. The festival is observed by Hindus, Jains, and many Sikhs.

 Raksha Bandhan is an ancient festival, and has many myths and historic legends linked to it. For example, the Rajput queens practised the custom of sending rakhi threads to neighbouring rulers as token of brotherhood. On Raksha Bandhan, sisters tie a rakhi (sacred thread) on her brother's wrist. This symbolizes the sister's love and prayers for her brother's well-being, and the brother's lifelong vow to protect her.

The festival falls on the full moon day (Shravan Poornima) of the Shravan month of the Hindu lunisolar calendar. The festival is marked by the several rituals, which vary regionally within India. Typical rituals include:

Days or weeks before Raksha Bandhan, women shop for Rakhi, the ceremonial thread to tie around her brother's (or brother-like friend's) wrist. Some women make their own Rakhi. A Rakhi may be a simple thread, woven and colorful; or a Rakhi may be intricate with amulets and decoration on top of it. Sometimes, a Rakhi may be a wrist watch or men's wrist accessory in the form of bracelet or jewelry. Rakhi in the form of a colorful woven thread is most common. Typically the brother(s) too shop for gifts for the sister, ahead of Raksha Bandhan. The gift from the brother can be a simple thoughtful token of love, and may be more elaborate.

On the morning of Raksha Bandhan, the brother(s) and sister(s) get together, often in nice dress in the presence of surviving parents, grandparents and other family members. If the sister and brother are geographically separated, the sister may mail the Rakhi ahead of the Raksha Bandhan day, along with a greeting card or letter wishing her brother well. The ritual typically begins in front of a lighted lamp (diya) or candle, which signifies fire deity. The sister and brother face each other. The sister ties the Rakhi on her brother's wrist.

Once the Rakhi has been tied, the sister says a prayer for the well being - good health, prosperity and happiness - for her brother. This ritual sometimes involves an aarti, where a tray with lighted lamp or candle is ritually rotated around the brother's face, along with the prayer and well wishes.

May the lord of all beings protect you,
May the one who creates, preserves and dissolves life protect thee,
May Govinda guard thy head; Kesava, thy neck; Vishnu, thy belly;
the eternal Narayana, thy face, thine arms, thy mind, and faculties of sense;
May all negativity and fears, spirits malignant and unfriendly, flee thee;
May Rishikesa keep you safe in the sky; and Mahidhara, upon earth.

After the prayer, the sister applies a tilak, a colorful mark on the forehead of the brother. After the tilak, the brother pledges to protect her and take care of his sister under all circumstances. The sister then feeds the brother, with her hands, one or more bites of sweets (desserts), dry fruits and other seasonal delicacies.
The brother gives his sister(s) gifts such as cards, clothes, money or something thoughtful. The brother may also feed his sister, with his hands, one or more bites of sweets, dry fruits and other seasonal delicacies. They hug, and the larger family ritually congratulate the festive celebration of brother-sister love and protection. The brother(s) wear the Rakhi for the entire day, at school or work, as a reminder of their sister(s) and to mark the festival of Raksha Bandhan.

“Deadly Revisions” Releases New Extended Trailer

“DEADLY REVISIONS” unleashes a new, extended trailer in celebration of becoming an official selection of the New York Independent Film Festival!

deadly revisionsWith the announcement of writer/director Gregory Blair’s “DEADLY REVISIONS” becoming an official selection of the New York Independent Film Festival, fans can now get a longer peek at the film with a brand new trailer that reveals more of the creepy goings on.  But one thing remains:  Blair’s unique blend of psychological thriller and horror film is getting people excited.

The film has already garnered Blair the EOTM Award for “Best Director of an Indie Horror Film” and reviewers to laud it as “Mind Blowing” (Charred Remains Blogpost) and “Visionary! ” (A Bucket of Corn) with “Genuine Fun Jolts!” (Ain’t It Cool News).   In addition to the New York Independent Film Festival, “DEADLY REVISIONS” is also an official selection of the FANTastic Horror Film Festival with more to be announced in the coming weeks.

In the film, Emmy Award winning horror movie favorite Bill Oberst, Jr. plays Grafton Torn—an amnesiac horror film writer for whom hypnotherapy and nightmares reveal terrifying images that just can’t be real.  Or can they?  A valentine to the horror genre, the film provides all the spooky staples fans adore while providing loving winks to masters such as Brian DePalma, Sam Raimi and Alfred Hitchcock.  Through the combination of these elements, as our hero examines his past, the film also examines the art of the horror film itself and its own value as a fun and safe place to confront our fears and, maybe, go a little crazy.

So turn off the lights, turn up the sound and take a closer look at “DEADLY REVISIONS”:

My Review Of “Blood Rush”

blood rushEvan Marlowe’s “Blood Rush” takes a new look at the zombie concept, choosing the viral outbreak-bloodlust cannibal idea. The film stars Kerry Finlayson, Don Donnelley, Christy Lee Hughes, Helen Soraya, Amanda Barton and Emrhys Cooper. When a small town is overcome with a blood lust, the local Witch Doctor is thought to be the source. What they don't know is that he has a different agenda.

The story is a steady, entertaining nightmare that takes the zombie flick into the viral outbreak/mutant region of the idea. Crazed blood thirsty cannibals terrorize the small community which is half “running for their life” and half “oblivious” to the situation. It provides for a continuously entertaining film that has moments of classic thrills, gore and dark satirical humor. “Blood Rush” creates a story arc that moves smoothly from start to finish and presents a cool indie chiller.

The special effect and soundtrack/sound effects used in “Blood Rush” are on the lower end but shot in a way that works. And the scenes that have no way around being noticeably cheaper, than what the crew would have liked, are done in a satirical manner, of  amusement, that make those moments work as well. The soundtrack isn’t all that memorable but does allow for some emotional carryover between the story, acting and audience. I just feel it could have had more energy put in with stronger music to really create a solid viewing experience. The sound effects are standard but do well creating a eerie atmosphere both in the dramatic scenes and the action sequences.

Overall “Blood Rush” is a good, indie horror that is entertaining. I liked the viral outbreak approach to the zombie-esque story telling. The transition from normal everyday citizen to crazed cannibal is far more terrifying to me personally than the dead rising up from the grave. The film has some minor drag when it comes to dialog, and dramatic interaction between characters, but not enough to cripple the film completely. “Blood Rush” manages to be fun and mature which isn’t easily done. A lot of times a film’s satirical elements can seem juvenile or the mature structure of the story falls flat. With “Blood Rush” things work and the story evolves both as entertaining fun, and gory chiller.

My Review Of “A Clown’s Recovery”

“A Clown’s Recovery” follows the journey to recovery of one of today’s best known circus performers in the indie performing arts community. In 2011, on July 2nd, Jelly Boy The Clown faced a real life horror when he awoke to fire engulfing his apartment home. The tragedy left him in life-threatening condition with a long road to recovery. “A Clown’s Recovery” documents that journey and is directed and produced by Jelly Boy’s, a.k.a. Eric Broomfield, brother Matthew Broomfield.

The documentary is a heart-felt, emotional look into Jelly Boy’s tragedy and steady recovery. I was impressed with how much compassion and feeling emanated from the screen as I watched the story unfold through biopic, first person footage accompanied with narrative provided by the brother, Matthew. It is stark reality in the most vulnerable and personable manor. I reviewed a film that Jelly Boy was featured in awhile back, “Freakshow Apocalypse”, a film I did not enjoy but noted the honest, love given to the side-show/circus performance arts community. Now after watching “A Clown’s Recovery” and seeing how tight, and loving that community is and the effect Jelly Boy had on his comrades, I am even more appreciative of both his and all performing artists’ work and lifestyle. It is a passion and art and won that fueled Jelly Boy’s recovery in magnificent detail.

Along with the second person account of Jelly Boy’s journey to wellness, “A Clown’s Recovery” gives some nice first person accounts from family and friends of Jelly Boy that pulls at the heartstrings. I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this documentary but I found myself touched by the story, the performance community, and the effect that Jelly Boy had on his “people”. There is also some cool animation graphics mixed with photographs provided some visually compelling actuality to the events and ordeal of Jelly Boy which help make this one really well produced, directed and compelling documentaries.
