My Review Of "The Queen Of Hollywood Blvd"

Orson Oblowitz’s feature debut, "The Queen Of Hollywood Blvd", is a arthouse crime thriller mash-up of exploitation, gonzo, cult film and neo-western expressionism. The film stars Rosemary Hochschild, Ana Mulvoy Ten, Roger Guenveur Smith and the late Michael Parks. In the fashion of Russ Meyer and David Lynch, Oblowitz creates a symposium of neon noir in true indie style.

On her 60th birthday, Mary (Rosemary Hochschild) finds her past coming back to haunt her, as a 25-year-old debt means the mob is ready to collect with interest, their sights set on the strip club she has run all her life. There’s only one thing she can do: Mount her defenses and stand her ground in a spiral of violence and revenge that will leave no one in her life untouched.

The story is typical mid-century crime thriller, on a slow train to madness and mayhem- kind of day. Either 20th or 21st,  you decide. The visual and written drama could fit easily in both centuries. With its extravagant way of taking the daily affairs of a downtown life which explodes in sinful, cigarette stained fanfare. Although it isn't completely original, Orson's film is unique and entertaining. There are moments when the sensations of the mundane motion of moving through the day seems to drag on just a little too much.

The acting, especially by Rosemary Hochschild, is memorable. Recognizable characters displayed in almost "half-life" nuances pepper the scene in true boulevard fabulousness. The dialog and drama ebb and flow a bit choppy in some scenes while other times the story pulls you in to near Tarantino-esque coolness. The inconsistencies,  although noticeable,  never really dampen the overall quality of "The Queen Of Hollywood Blvd.

As far as the violence and crime segments are concerned,  the movie never really gets you to true, and ultimate exploitation or grindhouse levels. There are only a few moments of cruelty and blood splatter, done well, but with a story and characters such as Oblowitz offers up, the excessive and gratuitous violence was justifiably warranted. Still the cinematography and atmosphere helped ease the loss of brutality some. Especially the scenes washed over in delicious neon light.

Overall "The Queen Of Hollywood Blvd" is a nice noir , arthouse drama. The story is entertaining,  the characters are familiar,  and the overstylized indie concept is kitch. Those seeking Tarantino level of violence and bloodshed won't find it here,  but this a good one worth watching for indie avant garde fans. (4/5)

My Review Of "Blessed Are The Children"

"Blessed Are The Children" is writer,  director Chris Moore's throwback slasher. The indie horror blends 70's and 80's tropes with a contemporary concept. It stars Kaley Ball, Jordan Boyd, Adrian Thigpen, Keni Bounds.

Traci Patterson, an adrift 20-something who's still reeling from the death of her father and her breakup with an abusive fiancé, discovers that she's pregnant. With the help of her friends, Erin and Mandy, she decides to terminate her pregnancy, but quickly after leaving the clinic, she begins seeing and hearing things - shapes in the corner of her eye, strange noises in the middle of the night, and ghoulish figures stalking her every move. Is it guilt or are Traci and her friends in grave danger?

"Blessed Are The Children" combines the classic horror style nicely with the more modern concept, the atmosphere is familiar slasher flare, in an ultra low budget way. The pace and steady straightforward design is methodical, quality work that elevates the relative inexperience of the cast, and financial restraints with production. Kudos to Moore for some impressive directing and obvious eye for storytelling.

The special effects and horror elements are some of the better work I have seen in low budget indie horror. Thought out moments of visceral blood and gore fill the films horror scenes with bold,  practical ideas that really shine. Plus the atmosphere and sound effects are reminiscent of such films like "Alice Sweet Alice" and "The Town That Dreaded Sundown".

My only red flag with "Blessed Are The Children" is the religion-esque , biased feel that the subject matter seemed to carry. It dealt with abortion and possibly seemed more prolife, than neutral. It is a controversial topic and even today moods can feel a bit threatening on both sides. Which oddly enough is part of what makes this movie some quality indie horror entertainment. (3.5/5)

My Review Of "An Hour To Kill"

"An Hour To Kill" is an indie horror anthology that blends classic satirical episodes with gonzo storytelling and traditional disturbia. It is directed by Aaron K. Carter and stars Mel Novak, Frankie Pozos, Aaron Guerrero, Amanda Rau, Joe McQueen, Brendan Mitchell, Gabriel Mercado, Luna Meow, Arash Dibazar, Vince Kelvin and Veronica Ricci.

Two assassins have an hour to kill (so to speak) before their next hit. To help pass the time, they entertain themselves by sharing horror stories to one another. With bizarre titles such as "Valkyrie's Bunker" "Assacre" and "Hog Hunters" - which hit-man's story will be deemed most disturbing when all is said and done?

The three stories within "An Hour To Kill" starts of with a nice wrap-around featuring hitmen out on an assignment, and engaged in indepth conversation. It is a crime noir styled tale that literally presents each of the other tales. At times the wrap-around feels sketchy, sort of haphazard in its flow. But a lot of it is cool, indie fun with plenty of entertainment value.

"Valkyrie's Bunker" is the first story presented within the anthology. It takes us back in time to the 80's. The story feels more like 90-91 affair,  and demands a suspension of belief- Nazi's in Southern Cali? Most of the kills are off screen and the ending hits more like a non-ending. My least favorite of the twisted tales.

"Assacre" is a bit grosser and more comical than any other story in "An Hour To Kill". It is a tale worthy of any foodie's gag reflex. Still the story is fun and the limited gore and bloodletting is done nicely for lowbudget horror.

"Hog Hunters" is the more traditional short in the series. The tale of rednecks seeking out the arousing squeal of the pig. A definite homage to "Deliverance" but in the guise of mutant creature feature fanfare. This one is the cleanest,  more developed of the stories. The complete short feels more like a cut-down of quality feature length horror comedy. My favorite one.

"An Hour To Kill" is quality low budget storytelling. The concepts may not be too original but they are clever, amusing and done well. On the down side some line delivery is choppy, at times the execution of scenes is amateur  , and not nearly enough gore and guts as I was hoping for,  but still it is a solid anthology with plenty of indie goodness. Trailer Released For "American Exorcist"

BILL MOSELEY’S AMERICAN EXORCIST TRAILER DEBUTS

Gravitas Ventures, the independent film distributors, are proud to announce the release of an all-new trailer for American Exorcist, a Christmas Eve horror movie produced by slasher legend Bill Moseley (House of 1000 CorpsesRepo! The Genetic OperaThe Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2).

Christmas always seems to bring bad luck to the American Building. After a century of tragic accidents and unexplainable deaths, the infamous skyscraper is reportedly haunted. Georgette Dubois (Falon Joslyn) is a professional skeptic hired by Management (Bill Moseley) to debunk those urban legends. She’s a scientist, meticulously searching for something to believe in. Her every encounter with the supernatural appears to have a rational explanation. None of that experience as a paranormal investigator prepared her to be trapped high above the city with genuinely ghoulish horrors. Instead, Georgette must reconnect with her spiritual roots if she hopes to survive.

American Exorcist was shot on location in Philadelphia at the historic Inquirer Headquarters. The now abandoned high rise doubles as the equally old and decrepit American Building; a haunted office complex burdened by 100 years of bad luck and mysterious deaths.
Co- Directors Tony Trov and Johnny Zito are life long friends who began their careers writing horror books for DC Entertainment (La Morte Sisters) and Image Comics. (D.O.G.S. of Mars).
“Our second feature is a love letter to Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci,” explains Tony Trov.
“We’re really excited to show off our work with Bill Moseley and Falon Joslyn. This was a real collaborative effort,” continues Johnny Zito.

American Exorcist is to be released world wide Oct 26 on Amazon, iTunes, DVD and Blu-ray through Gravitas Ventures.

Poster And Trailer Released For "The Curse Of La Llorona"

Supernatural thriller "The Curse Of La Llorona" hits U.S. theatres April 19th. The film is a mashup of terrifying urban legend and spiritual horror. It stars Linda Cardellini, Raymond Cruz, and Patricia Velasquez. The cast also includes Marisol Ramirez, Sean Patrick Thomas, Jaynee-Lynne Kinchen, and newcomer Roman Christou. Check out the creepy poster and first trailer.

La Llorona. The Weeping Woman. A horrifying apparition, caught between Heaven and Hell, trapped in a terrible fate sealed by her own hand. The mere mention of her name has struck terror around the world for generations. In life, she drowned her children in a jealous rage, throwing herself in the churning river after them as she wept in pain. Now her tears are eternal. They are lethal, and those who hear her death call in the night are doomed. La Llorona creeps in the shadows and preys on the children, desperate to replace her own. As the centuries have passed, her desire has grown more voracious…and her methods more terrifying.

In 1970s Los Angeles, La Llorona is stalking the night—and the children. Ignoring the eerie warning of a troubled mother suspected of child endangerment, a social worker and her own small kids are soon drawn into a frightening supernatural realm.  Their only hope to survive La Llorona’s deadly wrath may be a disillusioned priest and the mysticism he practices to keep evil at bay, on the fringes where fear and faith collide.

Beware of her chilling wail…she will stop at nothing to lure you into the gloom.  Because there is no peace for her anguish.  There is no mercy for her soul.

And there is no escape from the curse of La Llorona.

My Review Of "Five Fingers For Marseilles"

South African western Five Fingers for Marseilles, from filmmaker Michael Matthews. The film takes place in a small town “governed” by dubious local officials, living in fear of a lawless mob; when an exiled outlaw returns home in search of solace and redemption, brotherhood and loyalty are fused with vengeance. It stars Vuyo Dabula, Hamilton Dhlamini, Zethu Dlomo, Kenneth Nkosi, Mduduzi Mabaso, Aubrey Poolo, Lizwi Vilakazi, Warren Masemola, Dean Fourie, Anthony Oseyemi, Brendon Daniels, and Jerry Mofokeng.

The residents of the colonial town of Marseilles are under the thumb of police oppression and only the young rebels known as the Five Fingers are willing to stand up to them. Their battle is just, until Tau kills two policemen and flees the scene. The remaining rebels disband while the banished Tau resorts to a life of crime.  Twenty years later, now known as feared outlaw The Lion of Marseilles, he is released from prison. He returns home, desiring only peace and to reconnect with those he left behind. The battle for South Africa’s freedom has been won, and former comrades-in-arms are in prominent positions as mayor, police chief, and pastor. But it quickly becomes clear to Tau that Marseilles is caught in the grip of a vicious new threat — and he must reconstitute the Five Fingers to fight frontier justice. Standing against former allies and new enemies, the re-formed Five Fingers saddle up and ride out, and put their lives at risk to save their beloved Marseilles.

The story is a strong commentary on social and economic disparage plaguing this world. In this case a world of post-modern,  rural life set in South Africa. It is a full-bodied, complex character study with heart and a hefty dose of classic spaghetti western attitude. The protagonist is a compelling,  emotional character that shows all the scares and tribulations of a hard life. Scares he wears effectively on his sleeve. A very convincing performance. The antagonists and varied townsfolk are all equally convincing personals and framed nicely in the story.

The effects are standard,  well-done elements one expects in a somewhat violent tome of expressionist folderol which plays out as perfect as any 70's experimental American western. The real effects are the musical score, atmosphere and cinematography. All are exceptional. The film isn't excessively exploitative with the bloodshed or violence,  so when it happens it becomes very affectational moments.Overall "Five Fingers For Marseilles" is above average for indie film making. It does move a bit slow but the pace becomes almost hypnotic in its ability to capture your attention and be entertaining. (4/5)

Get Ready For The Return of Dark Resurrection

Filming has wrapped on “Dark Resurrection: Keepers of the Force”. The project is the final chapter of the sci-fi saga loosely based on Star Wars, written and directed by Angelo Licata. The first film, released in 2007, surprised the world and has received compliments from Lucasfilm.

Driven by the success of the prequel Dark Resurrection Vol.0, which has generated millions of views on YouTube, and thanks to the donations from fans from all over the world, it has been possible to produce a concluding chapter with a narrative arc so ambitious to make necessary the division of the project in two parts: an illustrated novel and a trailer which conceptually is not dissimilar from a short movie.

"It's the most spectacular thing I've ever done," said actor Michael Segal, who plays evil Lord Drown in the movie. Unlike most of our local productions, the action scenes were filmed using cables and special
effects that allowed actors to perform stunts worthy of the latest Marvel films. Actor and stunt-man Daniele Balconi, who is also responsible for all the acrobatic scenes and combat choreography in the film, plays the hero Dan Lee. Actress and model Olga Shapoval is Ruya, a character that could be described as a female Han Solo. The young Lorenza Testa is Sabine. Veteran actors of the saga joined the cast: Giuseppe Licata (Sorran), Maurizio Zuppa (Zui Mar) and Grazia Ogulin (Nemer), as well as numerous extras from all over Italy. Filming took place in Carmagnola at Ouvert Studios.

"The desire to improve the quality of previous work was very strong," says Angelo Licata, "so I worked for a long time on pre-visualisation, developing the animation of the entire trailer to understand which shots were really necessary. In the meantime, I've put together an incredible and talented team. Some of them were a real surprise and could work in the most important international productions. In the last few years I have worked on many other
movies sets, but Dark Resurrection remains my first love. The air you breathe on the set is different, people work only out of passion, you can feel the fire of art in each of them, a bit like the "Force" of Star Wars, it crosses, it keeps us united, it binds us."

Almost everyone in the crew was a professional that joined the project without any expectation of compensation – everyone has done it for the love of moviemaking and for the desire of experimenting with a genre that has not been produced in Italy for a long time.
The directors of photography are two young talents, Riccardo Antonino and Luca Facheris.

Andrea Navicella is the first operator. The costumes were made by Giulia Danese and the set design is by Morena Trevisol. Special makeup effects are by Mila Mirenghi. The assistant director is Mattia Stancanelli. Weapons were made by propmaker Roby Rani, swords were created by Skyforge. Piero Bockos, Andrea Zanichelli and Luigi Bellucci of the 501st Italica garrison contributed with props and armors, while Robin Studio, a production company
based in Turin, contributed with its technical support. Production assistants were students of the Cinema Engineering Course in the Polytechnic University of Turin. Production has been managed by Riviera Film, Angelo Giampietro’s cultural association which has supported the
saga since 2007. It will take several months to be able to view the final product, but as all previous episodes it will be completely free.

IFC Acquires Frat Horror 'Pledge"

IFC has acquired distribution rights to frat house horror "Pledge". The film, directed by Daniel Robbins is slated for January 2019 release. It stars Zachery Byrd, Zachary Weiner, Aaron Dalla Villa, Phillip Andre Botello, Cameron Cowperthwaite, Jesse Pimentel, Joe Gallagher, Erica Boozer, and Jean-Louis Droulers.

Three nerdy college freshmen, who have been rejected and ridiculed by just about every fraternity on campus, are invited to an off-campus to a party at a secluded mansion.  There they treated like princes by the resident brothers and the party is everything they dreamed college would be—beautiful women, drinking, and most importantly, a cool group of guys willing to accept them as one of their own. When the friends are presented with an opportunity to pledge the elite social club, they accept without hesitation. However, as the gruesome, dehumanizing hazing progresses begins, a more sinister picture of the frat emerges.
