Psychotic Saturdays! Six Really Bad Psycho Slasher Flicks To Check Out

005 - Copy[3]Today is Saturday! The first Saturday of 2013 and time for my first Psychotic Saturdays! Saturday post. I pick six films that horror fans should check out on this day to help you celebrate the crazy. Whether good or bad, big budget or no budget these films where mostly made by people who love Horror. Both Independent and mainstream because they all deserve at least one moment of every horror fans time. This week I have pulled out six psycho slasher flicks that came out in the first decade of the 21st century.

1. KillerKiller (2007)

killer killer“KillerKiller” was directed by Pat Higgins who directed “Hellbride” and “Trashhouse”. This is a low budget horror flick that turns the tables on the killers. It stars Richard Collins, Scott Deyner, Dutch Dore-Boize, Cy Henty, Rami Hilmi, Danielle Laws, Danny James, James Kavaz and Nick Page. The story is set in a security facility in the middle of nowhere that houses captured serial killers. One by one the inmates are murdered by a mysterious character that looks like a traditional victim of horror movies. All the guards have vanished an a supernatural mist has frozen around the facility preventing the inmates from escaping.

2. Psychopath (2009)

psychopath“Psychopath” is about a girl named Sarah who after missing a desperate call from her stranded sister sets off to find her. Accompanied by friends Sarah heads toward a small town called Raven’s Neck. Too bad for Sarah and her friends because a psychotic mental patient has escaped and lurking in the small town. The film stars Kyle Billeter, Glenn Leftwich, Lawrence Wiencek, DaNae West, Russ A. Bryan, Miguel Girona Jr., Crystal Lonneberg and Jeremy Ambler. The movie was directed by Robert Elkins who also directed “Backwoods 2: The Revenge Of Caleb” and “Nightmare At Bunnyman Bridge”.

3. The Minstrel Killer (2009)

the minstrel killerWhen a series of haunting murders plagues a small Texas town, law officers Tex Holland and Pike McGraw lead the investigation. The murders turn out to be the most shocking and vile acts of sadism to ever hit the once peaceful community. With a dangerous killer on the loose re-enacting slave punishment on his victims, the cops must face their own personal demons as the murder spree throws them into a dangerous world of mercenary hillbillies and inbred cannibals. “The Minstrel Killer” was directed by Michael Fredianelli who directed “Apocrypha” and “The Fear Of God”. The film stars Michael Fredianelli, Anthony Spears, Vanessa Celso, Aaron Stielstra and Eric Andersen.

4. Summer School (2006)

Poster_of_the_movie_Summer_School“Summer School” was directed by (get this) Lance Henrickson, Ben Trandem, Steve Rhoden, Troy McCall and Mike Nelson. I guess no one director wanted to take full responsibility for this hot mess. It stars Simon Wallace, Amy Cocchiarella, Tony Czech, Lance Hendrickson, Jennifer Prettyman and Ty Richardson. Charles runs a website that reviews "the more macabre of the cinema world" and he has stayed up a bit too late trying to catch up on his work ala a horror movie marathon. In his rapid absorption of an endless series of dark delicacies, Charles has emerged the next day, the first day of Summer School in a bit of a mental flux. He is slipping in and out of consciousness, into a realm of sadistic, genre bending nightmares that test his sanity and question his grip on reality.

5. When A Killer Calls (2006)

When_a_Killer_Calls“When A Killer Calls” comes from The Asylum and was directed by Peter Mervis who also directed “Dead Men Walking” and “Snakes On A Train”, notice a theme running through The Asylum?! The film stars Rebekah Kochan, Robert Buckley and Mark Irvingsen. It is kind of a knock off of “When A Stranger Calls” but not quite. This film does focus on a babysitter and a psycho killer but it adds the twisted little extra that has the killer sending texts of a family he murdered to the babysitter.

6. Silent Bloodnight (2006)

SilentBloodnightThree teenagers, who sexually abused a mentally retarded girl, are being stalked and brutally murdered by an unknown serial killer seeking vengeance. When a television reporter, who witnessed one of the gruesome murders, tries to investigate further, she gets trapped in this web of bloody revenge and becomes the final target of this deranged murderer. “Silent Bloodnight” was directed by Stefan Peczelt and Elmar Weihsmann. It stars Monica Baci, Robert Cleaner,  Alexander E. Fennon, Andy Freund, Mike Vega and Christine Dune.

My Interview With Indie Director Lawrence W. Nelson II

Last week I received an update from Indie director Lawrence W. Nelson II about details on his first feature film project “The Mangled”. A film that will no doubt make an impression on Indie horror fans. It is a film that I have watched come along since the teaser poster warning of Cletus’ Coming way back in May of 2011. Since then Nelson has dealt with a few set backs and thankfully now looks forward the creation of his nightmare with excitement and positivity. He hasn’t just sat calmly in idle though. He created a new nightmare in the small five minute short about a deranged killer in the woods titled “You Found Me”. A short which perfectly plays out like a quick tease promo. Which it does very well. Lawrence W. Nelson II plans to expand “You Found Me” into a feature film after having Black Flag TV pick it up and after receiving great good feedback from fans. I had a chance to ask the young director a few questions about “You Found Me” and the future of “The Mangled” and here is what he had to say about both these interesting and ambitious projects.

A Southern Life: Where did the concept and inspiration for You Found Me come from?

Lawrence W. Nelson II: The initial concept came from the film Deliverance, Hostel and even the not so great Vacancy,  but I wanted to expand on that world and add in the slasher genre to it.  In the short, we just see our two victims getting tortured or killed, the feature is going to add in a lot more depth, and yes we expand our cast to the five friends who will be putting out there share of violence upon our attackers.

A Southern Life: How hard was it to decide what to allow for as far as scenes in the short and did you initially plan to expand upon the story later?

Lawrence W. Nelson II: The idea was always to expand You Found Me into a feature, the question was when that would happen.  I kept in touch with the actors, and then BlackflagTV picked up the short and we had a pretty great number of people who watched the short and a lot of emails from fans wanting to know if it was going to be a feature. I talked with the actors and said this is how I now see this project going, what do you guys think?  They got excited about it again.

A Southern Life: Will the feature stay mainly revolved around the two young girls abduction and killing, how will they share the story?

Lawrence W. Nelson II: The story line will grow, three more friends will come on the ride for You Found Me,  I just started the casting process for the rest of the roles.  I'm extremely excited about that.

A Southern Life: As far as the killer goes. will he stay the sole slasher in the feature or will he be part of a bigger clan of psychotics and will his back story be more developed?

Lawrence W. Nelson II: Our killers story will expand and there will be others, however, they won't necessarily know that each other is out there in the woods. I don't want to give to much away.

A Southern Life: What is the significance of the VHS recording and tape lying on the floor in the final scene of the film?

Lawrence W. Nelson II: It's trying to let us know that there is more to the story than just a slasher killing people, that this is something that was premeditated  and someone is orchestrating this from behind the scenes.

A Southern Life: In regards to The Mangled you have had some set backs but nothing too major thus far, how has it been for you bringing the story to life with these changes?

Lawrence W. Nelson II: Set backs are something that we all come to know in indie film making, it's just the case.  With that being said,  the story has always been the same. Have I made changes to it based on casting and talking with the actors? Yes - a good idea is a good idea no matter who it comes from. I'm pretty open to changes if it's something that makes sense to the overall story. So in a lot of ways, these minor setbacks have worked out for us to really to enhance the story and make it that much better.

A Southern Life: How different from your initial vision for the film is the new story going to be?

Lawrence W. Nelson II: The vision for the film has always been a gritty thrill ride and bring that realism much like the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre brought to audience's in the 70s.

A Southern Life: Just how gritty or gory will The Mangled be now ?

Lawrence W. Nelson II: I can say that I'm so excited about having on board Hawgfly Productions Inc. and Meredith Johns being our lead SFX person on the project, we've got some great blood and gore coming for the fans. They've only took my vision and really brought it to the next level of what we can do on camera.

A Southern Life: Who are the new cast members attached to the project and has that changed the story much having new actors come on board?

Lawrence W. Nelson II:  I had to basically recast my three leads, who are now going to be staring in You found Me, the new cast members are Mindy Robinson, Julet Reeves, Morgan Lester,  Carla Acosta, Sophie Gotberg, Rebecca Olejniczak, Hoyt Richards  and I'm still searching for the role of Cletus Bates.  It was so important to me to find the right person for each character and it was a long process, but at the end of the day it all worked out. This cast is going to really bring it.  The fans won't be disappointed.

A Southern Life: Who are some of the directors you admire in the industry?

Lawrence W. Nelson II: There's a lot of directors that I admire in film, but I more admire are the Director's of Photography, like Daniel Pearl or Michael Chapman,   For directors, I would have to say Tobe Hooper,  Sean S. Cunningham, Wes Craven, Ridley Scott, James Cameron, Stanley Kubrick, Quention Tarantino,  more recently Eli Roth, and I love what Adam Green is doing with the Hatchet series, Ti West, Simon Barrett, even Jen and Sylvia Soska who did a pictured called Dead Hooker in a Trunk, but there's a long list of indie horror directors.

A Southern Life:  What were some of your favorite horror films growing up?

Lawrence W. Nelson II: That's a hard one to go to a select few. but Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the Friday the 13th series, of course Nightmare on Elm street, Videodrome, The Dead Zone, The Shinning,  even the old monsters films like The Wolfman and The Mummy.

You can find out more about “You Found Me” and “The Mangled” at their respective Facebook Pages by clicking the titles. Also you can read my review about “You Found Me” here! As always check back for updates on both projects or any future projects coming from this fresh new director that I am sure will make a big impact on the Indie horror community. Both films are in the early stages of production and I for one am very excited to watch as things begin to unfold on both films.

New Bloody Image Of “Carrie” 2013

Check out the new phantom-esque bloody image of a half realized Carrie. The image plays upon the icon scene that is considered the pinnacle representation of the story of the telekinetic child who unleashes her angst on those who have bullied and abused her for most of her young life. Man I can’t wait to see this shit!!!!

A re-imagining of the classic horror tale about Carrie White (Chloë Grace Moretz), a shy girl outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother (Julianne Moore), who unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom.

The quiet suburb of Chamberlain, Maine, is home to the deeply religious and conservative Margaret White (Moore) and her daughter, Carrie (Moretz). Carrie is a sweet but meek outcast whom Margaret has sheltered from society. Gym teacher Miss Desjardin (Judy Greer) tries in vain to protect Carrie from local mean girls led by the popular and haughty Chris Hargenson (Portia Doubleday, Youth in Revolt), but only Chris’ best friend, Sue Snell (Gabriella Wilde, The Three Musketeers), regrets their actions. In an effort to make amends, Sue asks her boyfriend, high school heartthrob Tommy Ross (newcomer Ansel Elgort), to take Carrie to prom. Pushed to the limit by her peers at the dance, Carrie unleashes telekinetic havoc. Brian De Palma’s 1976 film version of CARRIE earned Oscar nominations for stars Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie.

A Low Down Dirty Shane By Sierra Dean

eBook Worth Reading:

LowDownDirtyShane-A72lgSierra Dean’s A Low Down Dirty Shane released through Samhain Publishing on Dec. 25th 2012. It is a novella worth checking out!

Thick-skinned vampire assassin meets smart-mouthed druid archer. Run, Cupid, run.

Shane Hewitt has been many things—failed husband, supernatural punching bag, and now a bitch to the vampire council of New York City. He thought killing rogue vampires was the hardest thing he’d ever do. Until a hot redhead smashes into him, shouts orders and announces she’s saving his life. The sole female warrior in a family of druids, Siobhan O’Malley knows how to take care of herself and protect the big city from beasties who breach gateways from the fae realm. The last thing she needs is a misguided, leather-clad hottie’s help to get the job done.

Except maybe he’s exactly what she needs. Siobhan is expected to be a willing, virginal sacrifice on her twenty-fifth birthday. Sex with Shane to stay alive? If he can pull his foot out of his mouth long enough and stop driving her crazy, no problem. Now if only the bad guys would leave them alone long enough to get the deed done.

Some days being a bounty hunter stunk.
The vampire snarled in Shane’s face, her breath rank with the copper tang of old blood and her spit wetting his cheek as she bared her fangs like a wild dog. Her lips were caked with red, as though she were a child who hadn’t quite mastered keeping her mother’s lipstick inside the lines.
Lady vamps had been the worst for Shane when he first started his job for the vampire council. He wasn’t exactly an old-school-chivalry kind of guy, but still…something hadn’t sat right about punching a chick in the face. Or blowing her head off with a .44 Magnum.
Until one had bitten a hole in his arm when he’d had a moment’s hesitation.
That’s how he’d learned not to hesitate.
Balling his fist so tight the skin pulled taut and white over his knuckles, Shane Hewitt drove an uppercut punch into the vampire’s cheek and smiled when her jaws snapped together with a loud clack. His hand burned with protest, the bones grinding against each other as he shook off the punch. Hitting a vampire felt a lot like throwing your fist into a brick wall. Only a brick wall couldn’t rip your throat out.
Expect the second attack, he warned himself. He didn’t want to think he needed the training he’d been receiving from the council’s sole female Tribunal leader, but Secret had kept herself alive for a hell of a long time when she’d been in his shoes. Maybe it wasn’t just because she was a freaky half-vampire. There might actually be some skill behind her bluster.
When the lady vamp lunged at him for a second time, he had to admit Secret was right about the advice she’d given him on the attack habits of the undead. She would know. She was one of them after all.
He dodged the vampire’s attack and landed a kick in the center of her back with one of his heavy motorcycle boots. With the fight odds shifting in his direction, he was thankful for being given the upper hand. Who cared where the wisdom came from, so long as it was right? The vamp bounced off the narrow alley’s brick wall and stumbled to the ground.
The first lesson he’d learned doing this job—don’t wait for a second chance, because vampires rarely give them. He stepped on her spine, hard enough he heard her vertebrae groan under his much heavier weight, and pointed his loaded Magnum at the back of her head.
“By decree of the Tribunal, I find you guilty of being a rogue. You are hereby sentenced to death by execution.” Blam. She didn’t have time to struggle or argue. Vampire justice was quick and lethal, just like the monsters themselves.
Shane whipped out the ancient LG cellphone he’d been given by the council. If it had been up to him, he’d be old school all the way and not carry a phone at all. But the council insisted his warden had to be able to reach him. He typed a quick message to Bellamy, his warden, and cursed the tiny keys on the cell for making him spell like a third grader with dyslexia.
Once the message was sent, the dead vamp stopped being his problem. He didn’t want to know what they did with the bodies, whether they destroyed them or if they monitored the site until the sun came up and did the dirty work for them. He was better off being ignorant about that.
Shane rolled the body under a stack of old boxes and kicked some garbage over the blood smeared on the concrete. Now tired and sweaty, he checked the safety on his holstered Magnum for the third time before he left the alley. He’d been shot in the arm a month earlier, and the memory of it still made his clavicle sting. He didn’t have any desire to repeat the experience at his own hand.
The alley was between an abandoned townhouse and an old brick church, so when Shane staggered out onto the sidewalk of West 124th Street, there was no one around to notice him wiping the sweat and blood off his face. Harlem was a great place to kill the undead. No one glanced twice at a rough-looking guy in leather, and people rarely called the police over the sound of a single gunshot.
Running a hand through his damp black hair, Shane fought the urge to light a cigarette. Not only did he not have one on him, he’d quit almost six years earlier.
But when the urge struck it struck hard.
He pulled an orange sucker out of the pocket of his motorcycle jacket and shucked off the plastic wrapper before popping the super-sweet candy into his mouth. Shane had no doubt he looked like a knob, but the suckers helped keep his mind off smoking. Only the orange ones though, for some bizarre reason. He’d tried every flavor under the sun, but orange was the only thing to successfully distract him from the craving for Marlboro.
The crinkling of the plastic wrapper was loud enough in the otherwise silent evening Shane didn’t immediately notice the new sound, and when he did he didn’t think much about it right away. Clacking heels on pavement wasn’t an unusual noise to hear on the New York streets, even on a late night in Harlem.
Hearing them running, however, was a little disconcerting. And hearing them running in his direction was enough to bring Shane’s attention around to the sidewalk behind him.
“Oof,” he exclaimed when a small woman collided with him.
Move,” she shouted in response.
It wasn’t like New Yorkers were in the habit of apologizing for causing bodily harm, but it was still an unusually rude way to greet someone you’d just smacked into.
“Well, hey now, I think—”
“No.” She grabbed hold of his jacket’s sleeve and pulled him behind her as she started running again. “I don’t mean get out of my way. I mean move your goddamn ass.”
Shane—no stranger to bossy women telling him what to do—thought, What’s the worst that could happen?
