HOLLYWOOD HORRORFEST (HHF) is honoring the genius of filmmaker John Carpenter with a special They Live 30th birthday bash, a fundraising benefit for the Vincent Price Art Museum (VPAM), Friday, July 27 at Mayflower Club in North Hollywood, California.
The world’s only 30th anniversary reunion screening and live concert for Carpenter’s beloved and timely 1988 thriller will kick off with electronic music legend Alan Howarth
receiving the IMPACT Award, followed by a live musical concert of Carpenter classics
They Live, Halloween, Big Trouble in Little China and Escape from New York.
"The blues score from
They Live is now used as an iconic representation of modern Los Angeles,” said Howarth. "With the film, John Carpenter eerily and accurately predicted the cardboard cities that are now downtown.”
Howarth is the second-ever recipient of the festival’s prestigious IMPACT Award (previously awarded to actor Dick Miller), given in recognition of a body of work that’s positively
impacted the horror genre. His work as a composer and sound designer includes such classics as
Poltergeist, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Hunt for Red October, Coppola’s
Dracula, Total Recall and Stargate.
"I'm honored to be getting the award from Hollywood Horrorfest; I’ve got a body of work going back 40 years, including my work with John as well as being sound designer on
Star Trek 1 thru 6,” said Howarth, who is currently available for media interviews. “Thirty years ago, I never thought we'd still be playing this music and it's a thrill to do it today.”
They Live
will screen immediately following the concert, as well as a Q&A with Howarth, actor Peter Jason (who plays the leader of the resistance) and several other very special guests (TBA), moderated by horror journalist Pat Jankiewicz.
“As word gets around we find more guests want to be part of this amazing celebration,” said HHF Director Miles Flanagan. “Be prepared for some very special announcements in the coming
weeks.”
The fundraiser will feature
They Live-themed raffles, with special prizes courtesy of 8BitZombie.com and Trick or Treat Studios, which include deluxe
They Live rubber masks, Hoffmann Lenses, They Live stickers & bubble gum and ultra-cool shades; the party will include a live DJ spinning Carpenter/Howarth classics, cosplayers, photo ops, horror memorabilia vendors, food & snacks and a full
bar.
“Believe it or not, this is the world's only
They Live 30th Anniversary Event, so miss it at your peril,” said Flanagan. “We’ve put a lot of love into this event as
They Live deserves a big birthday bash; its fan base just keeps on growing, as does the film’s relevancy. It’s just such a unique film.
Flanagan added that “it’s hard to have a fun event like this in a cinema, so we decided to find a more theatrical venue - one that accommodates
a live concert, film screening, vendors and a bar for socializing, all in one great space. The only downside is that seating is very limited for this exclusive evening, so I definitely recommend getting your tickets early. Dress accordingly, wear sunglasses
after dark… and don’t forget your bubblegum.”
The Mayflower Club is located at 11110 Victory Boulevard, N. Hollywood, CA 91606. Doors
open 6.00pm and tickets are available at
https://theylive30brownpapertickets.com. Tickets are very limited; once they sell out online there will be none available at the door.
