My Review Of “The Collective: V 5” Anthology

the collective v 5“The Collective” Anthology has returned with a fifth installment to the original series that challenges 10 Indie directors to create original stories from a common theme. This time around it was all about the dead things. Catching the zombie wave that has swept the planet Jabb Pictures manages to bring together cool and fresh new spins on the zombie apocalypse. “The Collective: V 5” screams the undead are taking over loudly and in a most entertaining format. This turned out to be a very fun and creative anthology that just proves why “The Collective” is tantamount to the Independent horror community’s vitality. The anthology series just proves Jabb’s point- “you don’t need a big budget to make a good movie”.

“Marauders” is a very dark and disturbing look at humanity lost. After the zombie apocalypse has taken everything we know, what is left? From the view point of “Marauders” there is nothing left for us or in us. The biggest fear is not what the world would become but what man would become. This short proves that man is still scarier than even zombies.

“Voice Over” is a quirky off-beat character study of one man’s eternal struggle with his normal self and the zombie he is to become. The short is told in true cinema verite style that is humorous.

“They Said They Were Here To Help” is a straight forward viral apocalypse that takes the undead fears into the conspiracy zone. There is dark intensity in this short that takes us into government cover-ups through one man’s eyes. I hated to see this one end so soon!

“Consumption Of The Heart” blends the emotional and the erotic with a story of relationship problems. It is a very bizarre teleplay that hints at the allure some may have with necrophilia. A very unusual short that both shocked me and made me a bit uncomfortable.

“A(gore)aphobic” is a psychological horror that has one woman dealing with isolation and frustration. It is a cool little reactionary piece that explores how strenuous it could be left with only one’s self for comfort during the apocalypse.

“Zombie Soup” is a fun documentary about the zombie craze. It is cool to see the wide view of zombies from the occult zombie through voodoo to the classic viral zombie known as flesh eaters or brain eaters. This short was very entertaining to watch.

“(se)XX Z(ombie)” is a cut exploitation short that takes advantage of the zombie craze in true anti-misogyny fashion. It turns the table of common perceptions allowing for the men to be sexualized by dominating women. This short is shot in a cool tribute style to the silent film era’s beginning. It is a bit twisted and erotic. Because of the style and dark humor this may be my favorite short in the collection.

“Spooky Stuff” is a playful documentary style short that has some cool background shots in some “spooky” locations. It is a cool film sort of like “In Search Of” fashion. I loved this one a lot.

“The Dead Things At Your Door Pt. 1 & Pt. 2” goes out with graphic gore filled frenzy. This two part short film takes a grindhouse blood and guts approach that is very entertaining to watch.

“The Collective: V 5” continues in the tradition started with this anthology series of being both creative and entertaining. The collection show cases some truly original talent and concepts that offer fresh new Indie blood into the horror community. I love these collections and several of the short films are permanently scarred into my brain-mass.
