New Horror Folktale “The Toyol” Coming Soon

the toyol“The Toyol” is a new psychological horror film based on an old Malay folktale. The project is a co-production of Little Big Film Company and Open Fire Films. The story follows a father attempts to reconnect with his six-year-old daughter in the wake of his wife's sudden and tragic death. Traumatized, the young girl retreats from her family only to find solace in a new and peculiar little friend who enters her life. A number of gruesome and untimely accidents leave neighbors and family members dead with only one thing in common: the daughter is the last to see them alive. With evidence mounting and his daughter the prime suspect, her father must race to uncover the real culprit and save them both. “The Toyol” will be directed by Brian Kazmarck from a script co-written with Russell Southam. It is scheduled to begin production in the spring of 2014. Like the film’s Facebook page to keep up with the latest on “The Toyol”.

A toyol is a dead fetus or stillbirth that's been re-animated by black magic. It's usually kept in a jar, or a box, and given offerings of food — often a few drops of blood from the creature's summoner. In return for the food and protection, thetoyol will lurk around the village at night, running errands for its master... errands the summoner would rather not be seen doing himself. Typical "errands" would include petty thefts or vandalism, which the toyol could get away with because of its tiny size. Since the toyol is really only a child, it would rarely be used for more serious mischief. Still, possessing a toyol is considered very dark magic indeed. Furthermore, though there are many legends about the ways to obtain a toyol, there are none about getting rid of one.
