Magnet Snatches Genre Shocker "The Eyes Of My Mother"

Magnet Releasing, the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, announced today that it has acquired worldwide rights to THE EYES OF MY MOTHER, the hauntingly beautiful and shockingly original debut from filmmaker Nicolas Pesce. The film fuses classic horror ingredients with gothic black-and-white imagery and was called the "discovery of this year's Sundance" by Indiewire's Eric Kohn. It also features a breakout performance from newcomer Kika Magalhaes. Magnet is planning a 2016 theatrical release.

In the film Magalhaes plays Francisca, a young woman who has been unfazed by death from an early age. Francisca mother, a former surgeon, imbued her with a thorough understanding of the human anatomy. When tragedy shatters the familys idyllic life in the countryside, Franciscas deep trauma gradually awakens some unique curiosities. As she grows up, her desire to connect with the world around her takes a distinctly dark form.

The film was rapturously received by critics at Sundance. "It contains some of the most memorable, almost poetic visual compositions in a very long time" wrote Roger Ebert.com critic, Brian Tallerico. Variety was equally enthusiastic, calling the film "a Sundance standout" and "an impressive, highly original horror fable" while Vulture dubbed it "a slick, simmering nightmare." Eric Kohn added that "Francisca is a movie monster for the ages.

"Nicolas Pesce has crafted an auspicious and unforgettable debut that immediately establishes him as one of the most exciting genre filmmakers to watch today," said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. "This is the kind of film Magnet was started for."

Filmmaker Nicolas Pesce recently signed with United Talent Agency and Washington Square Films, while lead actress Kika Magalhaes was snatched up by Anonymous Content.

"Prisoner X" has been picked up by Raven Banner and currently showing at the Euro Film Market in Berlin.

When their regular babysitter can’t make it, Dan and Joyce turn to her friend Anna to watch their three children while they go out to celebrate their anniversary. At first, the young woman seems like a dream come true for the kids, as she allows them to play with things that are usually off-limits. Saw’s Cary Elwes kicks off a roll call of hot faces including Shelby Young (TV’s American Horror Story), Michael Welch (Twilight, TVs Z Nation), and Allie  Deberry (Lazer Team) in a frightening twist on Shakespeare’s Macbeth that’s  being called one of the “surprises of the year” (lalafilm).

In this tense tale of psychological terror, Vivian Miller (Shelby Young) is a young twenties woman who's serving out her jail sentence at a work release program in the Midwest. Her 90 days of probation takes her to The Cawdor Barn Theatre, a dilapidated summer stock theater run by Lawrence O'Neil (Cary Elwes). Lawrence, a failed Broadway director, is now reduced to staging amateur productions with young parolees and raging over the mistakes from his past. Vivian's arrival in Cawdor starts a terrifying series of events that brings Lawrence's secret past to the present. After Vivian views an old taped stage production of Macbeth, a force of evil is unleashed which soon turns its sights on her. With the help of Roddy (Michael Welch), a local outcast, Vivian sets about trying to discover who the supernatural killer on the tape is before she becomes the next victim.

Written and directed by Phil Wurtzel, A Haunting in Cawdor will hit theatres around the country and be available on Demand March 11.
