“Evil Dead” Reboot Is R-rated, Maybe Worse"

Director Fede Alvarez’s “Evil Dead” reboot of the cult classic franchise originally brought to life by Sam Raimi has garnered a lot  of attention with it’s new spin on the Necronomican inspired story. From casting a female in the lead role of Ash that Bruce Campbell iconically introduced us to and more recently the amount of actual fear and gore giving the new film a more horror edge. This made waves because the fear for the new boost to the franchise was that with a new director and new vision the film would take a more comical kid friendly approach. Thank gods that isn’t the case. Now with Sam Raimi’s hand picked director and Bruce Campbell’s stamp of approval the new “Evil Dead” will be no less than R-rated and could be deemed even worse according to Sam Raimi who recently talked to Collider about the progress of the film.

Alvarez has wrapped photography and from Raimi’s statements on the project this “Evil Dead” will be more bloody and gory, so bloody in fact it will make all our heads spin.  “I’ve seen almost all the dailies and they’re really going for it. It’s gonna be grisly and intense and non-stop.” Raimi told Collider recently. Continuing on to say that the film will definitely have a R rating, maybe worse. Great news because this is one of the reboots that I have actually been super excited about praying that it would be actually horror driven with no real comedic puns or shtick sequences. All great news coming from the camp behind “Evil Dead” that is proving to be the exception to the remake jinx rule of law that has plagued many big franchise reboots of late.

My Review Of “Thug Life: All In The Game”

“Thug Life” directed by Gary Ugarek is an hour long hardcore look into  urban street life that is gritty and blunt in it’s approach. Shot in black and white the film has a stark in-your-face unapologetic view of gangs and what urban youth have come to call “The Game”. There is not much about this film or the emotion that it tries to convey that I relate to. To me it all seems senseless and counteractive to a normal life. That being said one cannot deny that this way of life is far more familiar to city and suburban kids than the quite mostly uneventful life that my white ass could imagine. The story follows a “firm” in the mean streets of Baltimore as they make their way up the latter to claim more territory in a bold and brutal scheme.

“Thug Life” begins as a window into this cold and straight forward life on the streets where gang politics dominate the landscape. One that sees children as foot soldiers peddling drugs for older members who in turn answer yet to older gang members in a relentless game of rules and methods. A life that sees more bloodshed than any other life in todays society other than war. There isn’t much of a moral or life lesson to the film and very little heart can be felt in the characters portrayed. It is a cruel and hard look into a world that very few set out to explore and those who live in it’s grip have few chances to escape from. As detached as I felt toward this film it does open my eyes to the flat careless ways of urban violence, ways that have no sympathy or care for life nor true respect for society to say the least no care or appreciation for life itself starting with their own. A true matter of fact hardcore look at the mentality and cruelty of “The Game” or gangbangers is what you have in “Thug Life”. If urban movies that draw light to this lifestyle are your thing then this film may set well in your collection.

My Review Of “Ancient Alien Question: From UFO’s To Extraterrestrial Visitations”

“Ancient Alien Question” is a documentary that sets out to answer the very questions of whether we are alone or have we been visited in our ancient past. The documentary is a next level discussion based on host Philip Coppens novel by the same name. He is also been prominently featured in the History channel series study “Ancient Aliens”. I did not have much hope invested in documentary expecting it to be the same old over debated questions of Alien intervention or contact by the same old investigators power pointed with the same old over exposed cases. I was very surprised to find a new and refreshing study unveiled in this documentary which actually gave me a mental list of fun explorative facts to check out online as soon as the film would end. Not many documentaries do that for me these days. Most give the impression of “seen that, heard that all before”. “Ancient Alien Questions” brings different, little known cases to light with edge of notoriety investigators and approaches a new level of conversation that I frankly had never heard discussed before. Historical events and research that has only vaguely been mentioned then quickly dismissed by other documentaries or shows.
With Philip Coppens  casual and refreshingly unexaggerated personality bringing up very interesting new topics with true honesty I found this documentary enjoyable to watch. There are specific questions that create a list that almost all Alien hunters for the truth hold to which Coppens mentions then systematically sets out to bring to light what makes the case that substantiates the argument for each of these questions and actually says whether or not he himself believes the common answer. More times than not he quickly points out the things that make some more celebrated discoveries as not true while proving the more intriguing and over looked discoveries as possible signs of proof of Alien involvement. This documentary brings forth new researchers that have not been over washed in the media with new lesser known areas of research that deal with cases such as The Chinese Dropa stones and African tribes with alien origin stories. There are also new more vibrant questions brought to light that show mankind’s abilities scientifically in ancient history as being more advanced than mainstream knowledge is willing to recognize. All in all this was a very informative and entertaining documentary from Reality-Entertainment.

Fantastical Warrior Flick “Solomon Kane” Finally Has U.S Release Date

First mentioned in 2009 James Purefoy’s “Solomon Kane” finally has a U.S release date. Directed by Michael J. Bassett the film features Purefoy has a 16th century warrior battling all the forces of evil that medieval sorcery can throw at him. Also starring Max von Sydow, Mackenzie Crook and Philip Winchester the fantasy/action film will be available on VOD August 24th with a theatrical release set for September 28th.

CAPTAIN SOLOMON KANE is a brutally efficient 16th Century killing machine. Armed with his signature pistols, cutlass and rapier, he and his men unleash their bloodlust as they fight for England in war after war on all continents.

Indie Horror “Unhallowed Bond” Explores Friendships And The Paranormal

Shane Cole and Masked Films new Indie horror flick “Unhallowed Bond” tells the story of Candace who after spending the night in a haunted house with companions Andie and Julie wakes days later to strange occurrences and new questions. The project directed by Shane Cole stars  Megan Lynn, Kathy Sue Holtorf and Sabrina Carmichael. Here is the official synopsis: “Andie, Candace & Julie were looking for a night of fun when they decided to stay in a supposed haunted house. Several days later Candace finds herself in the midst of strange happenings. When she calls on Andie for help, it's up to her to seek the answers.”

“Resolution” A Genre Defying Thriller

“Resolution” is a film that is getting a lot of attention lately. Recently picked up by Tribeca Films the film as seen a good amount of love from the festival circuit this year. Directed by Aaron Moorhead and  Justin Benson the intense cinema verite styled character profile thriller is being called “genre defying”.

A strong festival run is set ahead of the commercial release.

Horror buffs and film industry insiders have kept a keen eye on breakout co-directors Moorhead and Benson, who Twitch placed "in the class of bright young voices in American horror to watch including Ti West, Jim Mickle and Adam Wingard." The enterprising pair has an uncanny ability to capture true humanity within the context of an intricate narrative. While genre elements surface in Resolution, otherworldly tones create an exhilarating layer of unpredictability.
